to 5th May: Russian Wednesdays at Ilion Cinema

The Mir Centre for Russian Studies and Culture and the Ilion Cinema will be staging Russian Wednesdays, presenting various forms of Russian art. Cinema, painting and photography all come together in one place to illustrate the political and social development of contemporary Russia over the years. Once a month (from January until May) on a Wednesday, the Ilion Cinema in Athens, Greece will show classic and contemporary masterpieces of Russian cinema.

The films will be accompanied by activities in the theatre lobby, such as exhibitions of painting and photography by Russian artists; Russian cuisine will also be presented.

The project is scheduled to run for six months and is being sponsored by the Russian Embassy in cooperation with the Ilion Cinema.

The Banishment (2007) 17/2
After the award-winning The Return, Andrei Zvyagintsev goes to the limits of the human soul, following in Andre Tarkovsky's footsteps.

Five Evenings (1978) 10/3
The award-winning Nikita Mikhalkov brings Volodin's work of the same name to the screen and raises the issue of life's shattered dreams.

Solaris (1972) 14/04
Andrei Tarkovsky's film is based on the science fiction novel of the same name by Stanislaw Lem and earned recognition at many of the major film festivals.

A Few Days from the Life of I.I. Oblomov (1979) 05/05
A deeply human and emotional film by Nikita Mikhalkov.

Every Russian Wednesday at the Ilion Cinema in Athens, Greece will be a short tour of 20th and 21st century Russia. Don't miss it.
