This church is situated behind the Theatre of Dionysos, in a small grotto and can be reached by a rock path. The church is full of old pictures and icons. The church has extremely fine mosaics considered as one of Greece's finest and represents saints, monks, apostles, prophets and guardian archangels. But the most impressive thing is the representation of the Christos Pantokrator (Christ in Majesty) in the centre of the dome.
According to history, the monastery was sacked by the renegades of the Fourth Crusades. The church was rebuilt and occupied by monks until the War of Greek independence. It was then used as an army barrack and finally as a hospital for the mentally ill.

The actual monastery was built using material from the Roman temple and that is the reason of the existence of four columns.
The church's interior is also of great interest. There are beautiful frescoes dating from the 16th and 17th century.
There is a spring located above the hill, source of the river Ilissos whose waters were once sacred to Aphrodite and therefore believed to cure infertility.
