Crimes of Passion at the Biennale |
Visual artist Georgia Sagri talks about her performance and installation on display at the 1st Athens Biennale. The first impression you get from her is of a carefree young girl. Her eyes, however, hide a darker, more mysterious character. We met Georgia Sagri at the Technopolis café on a sunny afternoon, a few days after her performance at the 1st Athens Biennale but before departing for New York for her second year of graduate studies as a Fulbright scholar.Author: Mosaiko Staff Writer
We talked about her work, the Biennale and her life in the U.S., and we continued to talk as we walked through her installation at the exhibition. As you'll see, the conversation touched on some deep and thought-provoking themes, but right after, Georgia rode away on her mint-colored vintage scooter as carefree as she arrived.
Georgia, what artwork do you have on display at the Biennale?
The work is entitled "Below is the Sea and Closer..." It was created in two parts. Before planning the action and the installation, I researched court briefs to find murders of passion committed in the last 20 years. I took the briefs, read the statements, the evidence; I looked at the photos and chose four of the stories, the ones that were most interesting to me. I wrote four texts: the first features a female victim, the second a male victim, the third a male perpetrator, and the fourth a female perpetrator. Then, the curators decided on the space I would use, and with the help of two friends who are architects we did an architectural plan for the installation. It consists of a wood construction that hides its content and is a very simple imitation of a middle class Athenian apartment.
