Santorini under attack for its treatment of donkeys |
The Daily Express has launched an attack on the treatment of donkeys on the Greek island of Santorini located in the Cyclades, following a report that uncovered abuse of the animal. According to the Daily Express story "Time to end this appalling abuse" 'readers have bombarded the Daily Express switchboard with calls pledging to join the crusade to stop cruelty against donkeys in Santorini'.
Helen Sharpe one of those who called into the Express claimed "we saw three or four of the donkeys whipped with a brush it was disgusting".
Another quote is from Barbara Richards from Blackpool who claims "I will never go to the Greek island again".
The Greek government has increased the awareness of all citizens and companies dealing with animals in a “tourism arena” and maintains a humane approach. The RSPCA is quoted as saying about the Greek authorities "are treating these things more seriously now and the tourist board will take complaints".
Santorini is one of Greek tourism top resorts and is very popular with American visitors due to its natural beauty and easy access by cruise ships.
