"People with Disabilities and Mass Media"

For the third consecutive year, an International Conference on the subject of "People with Disability and Mass Media" is being organized and hosted by the Secretariat General of Communication - Secretariat General of Information (SGC - SGI). The conference will be held on June 23-24, 2008 at the Press Centre of the SGC - SGI (Fragoudi 11 & Al. Pantou, Kallithea). Journalists, academics and people with disabilities will address the conference.

23-24 June 2008

Issues to be discussed at this year's conference include:

- New Media and Accessibility

- Communication and Autism

- Paralympics and the Media

Two years on, international experience regarding actions and rights of people with disabilities - especially in relation to Mass Media worldwide - will be reviewed and discussed. During the Conference, an exhibition of paintings by children with disabilities, from the Museum of Children's Art, will be on view in the reception area.

Within the framework of the annual International Conference "People with Disabilities and Mass Media", the 2nd Emotion Pictures: International Documentary Festival on Disability" will take place on June 21-23, 2008, at the New Benaki Museum for Contemporary Art and Design (138 Piraios Street, Athens).

The festival - composed of documentary films focusing exclusively on issues of disability and aiming to put on the map issues of disability by artists from around the world - is once again organized by the SGC-SGI, in collaboration with the Greek Film Centre.

Both events have become annual, and form part of the public debate initiated in 2006 by the Minister of State and Government Spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos regarding People with Disabilities and Mass Media.

Communication sponsors of the events are Greek Public Broadcasters ERT and NET 105.8, as well as the ANA-MPA (Athens News Agency-Macedonian News Agency)
