The exhibition is taking place within the framework of anniversary events to celebrate twenty years of operation for Apeiron Photos.The photographers who participated in the project recorded the rise and catalytic effect of ever increasing information media in the Islamic world, the Western influence on the lifestyle of the local communities, as well as everyday life experiences in the Middle East. The motivation behind this exhibition and its purpose are finally and irrevocable to demystify the East and stop its demonisation in the eyes of the West. Click on the picture for more details.In January 2006, the Stanley Foundation commissioned the internationally renowned VII Photo Agency to record and highlight accurately the modern face of the Arab World and contemporary daily life in the Middle East.
The photographers who participated in the project recorded the rise and catalytic effect of ever increasing information media in the Islamic world, the Western influence on the lifestyle of the local communities, as well as everyday life experiences in the Middle East. The motivation behind this exhibition and its purpose are finally and irrevocable to demystify the East and stop its demonisation in the eyes of the West.
The images in the exhibition are only a small sample of the overall work that was carried out in the countries of the East by renowned photographers Alexandra Boulat, Gary Knight, Antonin Kratochvil, and Joachim Ladefoged. The countries photographed included: Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Syria and the United Arab Emirates.
The goal of the exhibition is to promote understanding of the contemporary image of the East and to cultivate the ideal of multiculturalism by presenting the many facets of the Middle East with accuracy and fidelity.
This is a unique international production that highlights the face of contemporary Arab communities around the world. It is worth mentioning that this international exhibition will be presented to the Greek public in the form of an entirely new production for Greece and in particular for the Benaki Museum. This exclusive production by Apeiron was designed to be shown in the Museum’s Atrium, in order to make a tour of the exhibition easy and interactive, with an easy passage from the images to selected texts and back.
