West Side Story Is Coming To Town

West Side Story Is Coming To Town
The world tour dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the creation of one of the most classical and most important musicals of all times, will be visiting Badminton Theater in Athens, from September 10 to 29, 2008.

On September 26, 1957, at the Winter Garden Theatre, New York, a huge chapter in musical theatre’s history was written, the West Side Story Broadway premiere. This was a unique theatrical work which, by its wonderful drama and musicality, imposed new prototypes in artistic and rhythmic expressions and introduced a new era. The creation of this classical - already from its premiere - work has combined the great artistic values of Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim, all of them leading artists in their fields in art’s history. The musical’s music, ballet, but also its story could easily become three separate accomplished masterpieces, not to mention the result of their concomitance.

West Side Story is the musicals’ epitome and a masterpiece which remains the leader in the field of musical theatre, in a separate category of its own.

The film adaptation of the musical, in which the input of the first “creative team” was decisive – Leonard Bernstein (music), Jerome Robbins (Conception, direction and choreography), Arthur Laurents (book), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) – won 10 Oscars a few years later and became famous worldwide. The musical became one of the most successful theatrical works of all times, and created a new path for the American musical theatre. Today, the creators of the milestone in the history of musicals have been acclaimed legends and the meeting of those extraordinary artists is considered as a magical moment in the modern history of theatre.

This fascinating and deeply emotional story that transfers Romeo and Juliet in the west side of Manhattan and the rival gangs of Polish and Porto Rican immigrants, was a punch in the stomach to the audience since the 50s till our days, whereas its “political” meaning is still actual. The unforgettable Bernstein’s songs “Tonight”, “Maria” and “Somewhere” that have been and are still sung by the greatest singers of our times, as well as the unsurpassable choreography by Jerome Robbins, make West Side Story a unique and unrepeatable experience.
The only world tour that has the exclusive permit to be called ORIGINAL PRODUCTION today is the one that will be visiting Athens. This production is directed and choreographed by Joey McKneely, one of the most renowned contemporary directors-choreographers. Joey McKneely was a great solo dancer and Jerome Robbins’ assistant. The world tour of the 50th anniversary of West Side Story, after touring in the Far Asia, has been presented at the Theatre du Chatelet, Paris, in November and December 2007, in Zurich and at the opera of Leipzig, whereas before its arrival to Athens on September, it will visit Dusseldorf’s opera and will spend 6 weeks at London’s Sadler’s Wells.
