Weekend on the island of Kea |
A perfect getaway for Athenians this September. The island of Kea -Gia as Venetians called it- lies just one hour away from Lavrio port and is amongst the most charming of the Greek islands. On arrival the visitor is struck by the politeness of the residents and the overall cleanliness of the island despite its close proximity to Athens. These factors make it a perfect destination for a weekend visit this September and a good get-away for those wishing to escape the upcoming elections on September 16.
Visitors arrive at the port of Korisia, which is one of the most secure in Europe with its lighthouse standing next to the small church of Agios Nikolaos. Korisia has a great beach in spite of being right next to the port.
Entering the town of the island, Ioulida the view is stunning as the blue of the sea blends harmoniously with the port and the surrounding islands. Cars are prohibited here and there is an area at the entrance to the town which offers easy parking and a wonderful view. Ioulida is build amphitheatrically and it takes a good deal of endurance to head to the top, but it is well worth the effort. Narrow paved lanes lined with white painted houses follow the tradition of all the Cycladic islands and help the visitor forget his problems.
Ioulida is home to the Lion of Kea chiseled in slate who has been awaiting visitors since 600 BC and he is never disappointed as it is only a fifteen minute walk to pay him a visit.
Kea has many small beaches to offer including Poisses, Kampi, Spathi and Xyla and many other small coves and beaches surround the island offering isolation and quiet.
Vourkari is the center of the island's nightlife with many cafés and bars surrounding the port. A bench at the roadside is a popular meeting point for visitors and residents alike creating a friendly summer atmosphere. As for tavernas Korisia is the place to head for.
A little further on from Vourkari is Kastriani Monastery which offers a spectacular view. The monastery is literally chiseled into a rock reaching up high into the sky. Even though it is no longer inhabited it is well preserved due to the concerted efforts of its priest and the inhabitants of Kea.
The downside of visiting the island is the lack of public transport and without a car or bike it is difficult to explore the island and visit its beautiful beaches. There are, however taxis and car-rentals which provide an easy solution.
