Father Tells Of How Gas Leak Killed Children

Father Tells Of How Gas Leak Killed Children
The father of two British children who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a Corfu hotel wept as he described the moments before their death. Neil Shepherd broke down as he told a Greek court how his children began feeling ill "within 10 minutes of getting into bed". Christianne Shepherd, seven, and her six-year-old brother Robert died from respiratory failure after gas leaked into their bungalow room from a faulty boiler in 2006. Mr Shepherd said he was unable to save them after he too was overcome by fumes and that he and his partner Ruth Beatson spent three days in a coma after being found unconscious. Mr Shepherd told the court that part of the reason the family booked the trip through Thomas Cook was because the agency said all accommodation was vetted under British standards.

Two British Thomas Cook staff are among 11 people on trial for manslaughter by negligence, including the hotel manager and nine other Greek nationals.

All face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Lawyers for Thomas Cook expressed sympathy for the Shepherd family and support for their staff.

"What happened in Corfu was a terrible tragedy and the thoughts and sympathies of everyone at Thomas Cook will always be with the family and friends of Christianne and Robert Shepherd," they said.

"This tragic accident happened because of a unique and unforeseeable set of circumstances for which neither Richard Carson nor Nicola Gibson are responsible, and should not be blamed for in any way."

The children's mother, Sharon Wood, told reporters: "We thought our children were going to have a happy holiday but their safety was in the hands of others who let us down."

The case resumes on February 17.
