"One Inch of Love" At Theatre Of The No

POLYPALA
"One Inch of Love"
Andreas Polyzogopoulos & Giorgos Palamiotis
at THEATRE OF THE NO

Saturday, January 25th  at 22:30

Theatre of the NO, Athens' first English speaking theatre, presents the musical duo «Polypala», featuring Andreas Polyzogopoulos (trumpet, effects) and Giorgos Palamiotis (bass, effects). On Saturday, January 25th , at 22:30 the duo will take the stage to perform both new material and compositions from their debut album, "One Inch of Love" , a work deeply inspired by nature and dedicated to reconnecting with the natural world.

Through their compositions, the duo creates a new musical "language", capturing the unique, archetypal essence of the Greek landscape, transcending geographical and social boundaries. Their music is influenced by artists such as Harold Budd and Brian Eno, as well as traditional Indonesian gamelan and Japanese gagaku orchestras.

The track titles reference real locations, such as Keros and Mt. Takao, natural phenomena like Apiary Wind and Solstice, and dreamlike moments such as A Cloud Passes Behind the Moon and Trees Breathing by the Sea.

As the artists themselves explain: "The album was recorded under an olive tree at Panagiotis’ apiary, in Tasia and Nikola’s olive grove in Langada, Amorgos, and in the park of Plato’s Academy in Athens. We hope to share some of the images that stayed with us and the emotions we experienced throughout this project."

Welcome to 21st-century love.

Four actors take on 24 characters, unraveling six unique stories filled with chaos, deception, and unexpected twists. With sharp dialogues and hilarious scenarios, the play satirizes the deadlocks of love in today’s world, mocking princes, exposing fragile egos, and revealing the truths we’d rather ignore.

From the small lies we tell to keep the flame alive, to the grand illusions we hold about intimacy and self-worth, this play holds up a mirror to the awkward, painful, and side-splitting realities of human connection.

Spend The Coziest Day In Athens

Winter in Athens might not be what you'd expect—sure, it’s chilly, but it’s equally beautiful, if not more so. With the upcoming Alkyonides Days, where the sun makes an appearance even during the winter months, there’s no better time to explore the city in a cozy, laid-back way. So, why not spend the day embracing Athens' winter charm? Here's your perfect cozy day itinerary that mixes delicious food, charming spots, and plenty of opportunities to soak up the unique atmosphere of the city.

1. Brunch at Acera The Brunch Project, Kallithea

acera
@acera_brunch

Start your day right with a hearty brunch at Acera The Brunch Project in Kallithea. This spot has gone viral for good reason, especially its massive wooden plate filled with everything you could want for breakfast or brunch—eggs, toasts, croissants, waffles, and more. The rustic vibe and large servings make it an iconic spot to fuel up for your day. Keep in mind, it's popular, so try to go early to avoid long waits (but trust us, it’s totally worth it!). You'll leave with a full stomach and a smile on your face!

2. A Cozy Coffee at Little Tree Books & Coffee, Koukaki

little tree
@littletree_books

After brunch, head over to Little Tree Books & Coffee in Koukaki for a cozy, relaxed atmosphere to sip on some coffee. This gem is not only perfect for coffee lovers but also for bookworms. You can get your caffeine fix while browsing through the selection of books—they even have cozy reading nooks to make you feel like you're right at home. It’s the perfect place to unwind before lunch and to enjoy a slow, peaceful moment in Athens.

3. Lunch at Kostas Souvlaki

kostas

When lunch rolls around, it’s time to get a taste of classic Athens street food. Head to Kostas Souvlaki on Filellinon Street for some of the best gyros in the city. The juicy, flavorful gyros are a must-try, and the lines move quickly (but they can get long, so make sure you get there early!). The best part? It's incredibly affordable compared to many other spots in Athens, so you can fill up without breaking the bank.

4. Evening Drinks with a View

a for athens
@a_for_athens

As the day winds down, it’s time for a drink with a view. Athens is known for its stunning rooftop terraces, and there are plenty of choices depending on the vibe you’re after. Head to A for Athens or 360 Cocktail Bar, two of the most popular spots offering breathtaking views of the Acropolis and the city skyline. If you're in the mood for something cozier, Ciel Athens or Giasemi (right in the heart of Plaka) are perfect choices for a more intimate, relaxed drink. Whatever you choose, you’ll be able to enjoy a unique sunset while sipping your favorite cocktail.

5. Ice Cream at Django Gelato

@djangogelato_ath

No cozy day is complete without a sweet treat, and Athens has no shortage of great ice cream spots. Head to Django Gelato to indulge in some of the best gelato in the city. Whether you're in the mood for classic flavors or something more adventurous, this place is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. For this time of the year we totally recommend the apple and cinnamon and tangerine sorbet flavors!

The Stories Behind Athens' Suburb Names

Athens is a city where every corner holds a story. Its suburbs, each with its own unique charm, carry names that reflect their historical, geographical, or cultural significance. From ancient worship to modern developments, the names of these areas reveal fascinating details about their origins. Let’s explore how some of Athens' most well-known suburbs got their names!

1. Marousi: In Honor of Artemis

Amarousio
Marousi, historically known as Amarousio, owes its name to the goddess Amarysia Artemis, a local deity revered in the area. In ancient times, a grand temple dedicated to Artemis stood here, drawing worshippers from across Attica. The name has endured through centuries, and the modern suburb continues to honor its ancient heritage, blending it with a bustling urban atmosphere.

2. Kifisia: A Connection to the Kifisos River

kifisia

The lush northern suburb of Kifisia owes its name to the Kifisos River, which flows through the region and historically played a vital role in the life of ancient Attica. The river, referenced in texts by ancient historians like Philochorus, served as a key water source and influenced the development of the surrounding area. Kifisia’s name reflects this geographical and cultural connection, emphasizing its historical ties to the natural landscape of Attica. Today, Kifisia is renowned for its verdant streets, elegant homes, and vibrant shopping districts, blending its natural heritage with modern sophistication.

3. Nea Smyrni: A Refugee’s Tribute

attiki 2048x1152

The name Nea Smyrni means "New Smyrna," a homage to the city of Smyrna (modern İzmir, Turkey) that was the homeland of Greek refugees who settled here in the 1920s following the Greco-Turkish War and the Asia Minor Catastrophe. The suburb preserves their rich cultural traditions through festivals, cuisine, and architecture, making it a lively and historical area.

4. Piraeus: The Ancient Port

mikrolimano 2048x1152

Although often seen as a city in its own right, Piraeus is deeply intertwined with Athens’ identity. Its name comes from the word "Peiraeus," meaning "the place beyond the passage." This refers to the narrow land bridge that once separated the port from the mainland. Piraeus has been Athens’ gateway to the sea since antiquity, serving as a vital hub for trade, travel, and naval power.

5. Petralona: Stones & History

petralona 2

Petralona gets its name from the Greek words "petra" (stone) and "aloni" (threshing floor), a nod to the agricultural heritage of the area. It was once a rural region where threshing floors were a common sight. Today, its cobblestone streets, neoclassical houses, and proximity to the Acropolis make it a favorite for locals and visitors seeking a taste of old Athens.

6. Glyfada: From Salty Waters to Cosmopolitan Charm

Glyfada aerial views from beaches and marinas

Glyfada, a prominent suburb along the Athens Riviera, derives its name from the Greek word "glyfo," meaning "salty" or "brackish." This nomenclature reflects the area's historical association with brackish water sources, particularly wells that produced saline water. YOUR ATHENS GUIDE In the 19th century, these brackish wells were notable landmarks in the region, influencing the naming of the area. YOUR ATHENS GUIDE Today, Glyfada has transformed from its humble beginnings into a vibrant, cosmopolitan suburb. Often referred to as the "Miami of Athens," it boasts upscale cafes, renowned restaurants, boutiques, and lively summer clubs, making it a central hub of the city's southern suburbs.

7. Zografou: The Artist’s Suburb

zografou

The suburb of Zografou owes its name to the Zografos family, whose name means "painter" or "iconographer" in Greek. The family owned much of the land in the area during the Ottoman and early modern periods. Today, Zografou is a lively area, home to major university campuses and a youthful population that contributes to its vibrant energy.

8. Kalithea: A Beautiful View

kallithea

The name Kalithea means "beautiful view" in Greek, and it is believed to refer to the suburb’s panoramic vistas of the Saronic Gulf. Founded in the late 19th century, Kalithea quickly developed into a bustling urban area while retaining its picturesque charm.
