Artifacts From The Akrotiri Archaeological Site On Display At Exhibition In Rome
Few events have marked the history of modern thought more than the rediscovery of Pompei in 1748. Never before had it been possible to read the life of the ancients and investigate the complex social networks of such an ancient city. This great insight into the past has made Pompei one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
In a completely different cultural environment, immersed in the scientific thought of the twentieth century, the rediscovery of the Akrotiri settlement in Santorini in 1967 reopened reasoning on the subject of natural catastrophe and discovery. The ancient Minoan center that was destroyed by a frightening eruption in the middle of the second millennium BC has returned, buried under masses of volcanic ash. Like in Pompei, the valuable discoveries allow us to revive a sophisticated civilization and comprehend the magnitude of the catastrophe that put an end to its history. The eruption induced not only the destruction of the buildings but of an entire era, literally burying it under several meters of volcanic matter.
Held from October 11 to January 06 at the Scuderie del Quirinale, in Rome, the Pompei E Santorini, L'Eternità In Un Giorno exhibition offers an extraordinary and unique comparison between the two ancient sites, united by a common purpose. Both settlements were buried by eruptions, along with their ideas, beliefs, cultures. The theme of catastrophe and rebirth will accompany visitors in a surprising journey back in time that will immerse them in history.
Remains of frescoes, jewels, ceramics, furniture, and everyday objects from both ancient sites will be on display. The exhibition will also include works by artists such as J. M. W. Turner, Andy Warhol, Giuseppe Penone, and Damian Hirst to highlight how the buried cities nourished artistic imagination.
The exhibition is co-organized by Scuderie del Quirinale, Ales SpA, Museo Archeologico di Pompei, and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades.

Elite Athletes In Santorini Experience 2019
Rio Olympic champions Spyros Gianniotis and Yasunari Hirai honored the event with their participation!
The “heart” of sports tourism beat for the 5th consecutive year at the top destination around the world, Santorini. Amateur and professional athletes from all over the world, traveled from 4-6 October for Santorini Experience, combining the unparalleled beauty destination overlooking the Volcano, with trail running and open water swimming activities.
The top sports tourism event in Greece was successfully completed with a record of participation from 49 different countries, with visitors staying in Santorini for at least 5 nights.

Foreign participations surpassed every precedent, as Santorini “hosted” athletes from America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Indicatively, participations of swimmers and runners were recorded from Australia, France, Germany, United Kingdom, USA, Japan, Canada, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia and Philippines.
Minister of Tourism, Mr. Harry Theocharis preceded the event, saying: “I wish from the bottom of my heart, to all those visiting Santorini, either as competitors to run and swim, or as friends who wish to watch them, to feel the uniqueness of this island and this experience; something which is very rare for anyone to be able to experience. Good luck to all. I wish this very significant tourism destination for our country, such as Santorini, to continue offering such unique experiences to every traveler who visits the island”.
The return of Spyros Gianniotis and the participation of the elite of the Greek National Open Water Swimming Team!
This year’s event featured the silver Olympic medalist in open water swimming Spyros Gianniotis, Japanese Olympic champion in Rio, Yasunari Hirai and the dynamic presence of the elite of the Greek National Open Water Swimming Team such as world champion Kelly Araouzou, European champion George Arniakos and Greek champions Dimitris Negris, Stellina Aplanti, Dimitris Manios, the twin Greek expatriates racing with the colors of the national team of Netherlands, George and Timos Skotadis, as well as Panagiotis Alogakos, Alexia Arvanitopoulou, Andreas Georgakopoulos, Dejan Jovanovic, Irene Diakoumakou, Maria Kirykou, Georgia Kyriakopoulou and Melina Trochalaki.
On Sunday 06/10, swimmers felt the eruptive atmosphere of the volcano. Participants swam the 1.5 miles (2.4 km) route from the volcano to the old port of Fira with the imposing view of the island in front of them at the Open Water Swimming by Vikos. The race was held under the technical direction of federal coach and director with Olympic and World championship distinctions, Nikos Gemelos, with the approval of the Hellenic Swimming Federation, following the FINA regulations, the approval of the Hellenic Coast Guard of 2 Santorini and the permission of Cyclades Regional Tourism Service of Ministry of Tourism.
Men’s winner was Japanese Olympic champion Yasunari Hirai, George Arniakos finished 2nd and Dimitris Manios in the 3rd place. In women, World champion Kelly Araouzou was 1st, Stellina Aplanti finished 2nd and Irene Diakoumakou came 3rd. Swimming race with the highest possible safety
The absolute safety of the race was ensured with the contribution of the Boatmen Union Santorini, which transported the athletes to the volcano and contributed to the smooth running of the open water swimming, the 100 specialized escorts in the water, mainly assisted by Lifeguard Patrol and several lifeguard boats beyond its staff, Voluntary Lifeguards of Santorini, Atlantis Dive Center, Santorini Nautical Club, Santorini Yacht Cruises and Caldera Yachting, all with more than 30 boats next to the athletes! The organization provided swimmers with a high-quality safety lifeguard buoy. In fact, Olympic champion Spyros Gianniotis set the example by swimming with a lifeguard buoy. The event joined the Global Swim Series (GSS) [numbering more than 150 swimming races].
On Saturday 05/10, the 15km by Samsung, 10km and 5km “Aristides Alafouzos” races were held. Runners had the opportunity to enjoy the three established routes on the Caldera, overlooking the enchanting images of the volcano and the background scenery of Imerovigli, Firostefani and Oia. Specifically, the 5km “Aristides Alafouzos” route concerned the running and dynamic walking, the 10km was addressed to the most experienced in distances and the 15km route by Samsung to those who love strength, endurance and adrenaline. All routes started from the desalination plant in Oia, including parts of the trail track, and finished in Oia. The running routes are designed by the former marathon runner, Greek classic route record holder, running trainer and director of All About Running, Nikos Polias. 5km and 10km running races were co-organized with AS Ifestos Thiras and EAS SEGAS Cyclades Region with the approval of the Hellenic Athletics Federation [SEGAS]. “Santorini Experience” was part of the global community of World’s Marathons [numbering more than 4.391 running races worldwide]. Characteristically within 7.5 kilometers, there were 40 rescuers and lifeguards with first aid experience! With the contribution of the Municipality of Santorini and Municipal Sports Cultural Environmental Organization of Santorini (DAPPOS) the event ensured the cleaning of the path that connects Oia with Fira.

In the framework of Santorini Experience, and in cooperation with MGC Soccer Central, head coaches from the academies of Real Madrid visited Santorini for the first time and 3 specifically the facilities of the athletic center Playland, from October 3-6, 2019 and taught football to 100 children aged between 6 and 16, using the coaching methodologies of Los Merengues!
The event innovated for yet another year with the official technology partner, Samsung. During the race, runners had the opportunity to try out the latest Fit-e technology and measure the calories they burned, their heart rate and of course their time. Mohegan Reveals Plans For Luxury Casino Resort In Athens
Last week US casino operator Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment revealed its plan to build a big casino resort on the Athens Riviera.
Mohegan is competing with Hard Rock International in a tender to build and operate a casino within the planned 8-billion-euro resort at Elliniko on the site of Athens' former international airport. The winner of the tender will construct a large casino, a luxury hotel, entertainment venues, a conference center, and a sports center.
Mohegan's CEO Mario Kontomerkos, stated that all costing, land planning, and architectural design is finished. "We are ready to begin as soon as we receive all the necessary approvals," he said. "We want to start as fast as possible."
Mohegan is competing with Hard Rock International in a tender to build and operate a casino within the planned 8-billion-euro resort at Elliniko on the site of Athens' former international airport. The winner of the tender will construct a large casino, a luxury hotel, entertainment venues, a conference center, and a sports center.
Mohegan's CEO Mario Kontomerkos, stated that all costing, land planning, and architectural design is finished. "We are ready to begin as soon as we receive all the necessary approvals," he said. "We want to start as fast as possible."
According to Kontomerkos, the Mohegan casino resort will attract even more tourists to Athens and generate over 7,000 job openings.

“Global Anesthetics” At FokiaNou Art Space
FokiaNou Art Space is pleased to present “Global Anesthetics”, a group show bringing together three artists: installation artists, Zach Hart and Alexandra Wilson, presenting their collaborative series, Connect Haven, and sound artist, Anne Gry Friis Kristensen, presenting new sound work made for the exhibition. At what point do aesthetics begin to overlap with anesthetics? Considering hyper-mobility, pilgrimage, the desire to travel for pleasure, “the global village”, and the ever expanding tourist industries we seek to investigate the anesthetizing effects of homogeneity.
Aesthetics conjoining one city to another in completely opposite corners of the world simultaneously welcome and limit visitors who seek a comfort blanket, a blanket which they recognize the warmth from and then desire to stay beneath. As the anesthetic takes hold and puts us under, potential stored energy reserved for randomness and the event is steadily drained. A short program of experimental films will be presented in conjunction with the exhibition, featuring works addressing technology, communications, and mediated realities from artists Mary Helena Clark, Nyle Kaliski, LGHQ, Nina Wiesnagrotzki, Jessica Wilson and Danielle Zorbas.
Zach Hart and Alexandra Wilson are based in New York City and began their collaboration in 2018. Both received a BA in art from Hampshire College in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Their works have been shown at Very Project Space (Berlin), Sunview Luncheonette (NY), Northampton Film Festival (MA), and Peripheral Visions Film Festival (NY). Anne Gry Friis Kristensen (born in Danmark, 1987) is a Danish sound artist, composer and filmmaker, educated from The National Danish Film School in 2013.
FokiaNou Art Space is an artist-run project space in the intimacy of a small apartment in an old building in the center of Athens. The space encourages collaborative creative efforts between Greek and foreign artists, thereby promoting and supporting the local art community. The space hosts exhibitions, workshops and projects under the direction of two artists, Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris.

Monumental Grand Fashion Show Takes Place At The Temple Of Poseidon
The Greek-born, London-based fashion designer Mary Katrantzou made history this week when she became the first to stage a fashion show at the Temple of Poseidon, in Sounion near Athens. It was the first time that the Greek authorities gave permission for a private event to take place at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. To honor the majestic backdrop of her fashion show, the designer created something suitably momentous.
“The collection was based on the ideas birthed in Greece in the 5th century BC, when the temple was built,” the 36-year-old designer tells Vogue. “From trigonometry to physics, biology to theology and philosophy; I wanted to show how these ideas dating back two-and-a-half thousand years are as modern today as they were then.” “This was the first time I had done something in Greece since I left [for London] and it’s the first time I have done something so connected to the country’s heritage. My emotional barometer has just exploded.”
The proceeds from the ticketed event are going to children’s cancer charity, ELPIDA.

New Disabled Lift To Be Installed At The Acropolis Of Athens
The Acropolis of Athens, one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world, will soon be offering the much-needed improved disabled access.
The central archaeological council (KAS) of Greece has recently approved the installation of a new elevator to provide easier access to disabled visitors. Furthermore, the council has also approved the upgrade of existing lighting for the site and its landmarks.
In terms of lighting, the KAS decision refers back to a 2003 study carried out by renowned French lighting designer Pierre Bideau. The planning will be carried out by Bideau’s collaborator Costas Kapos of the Doxiadis Bureau.

Ouzo: A Beginner's Guide
Care for an ouzaki? Like many other Greek words, ouzo is often referred in the diminutive, which makes it even more charming and appealing. There is nothing severe or pretentious about an ouzaki; it can be an excuse for a break in the middle of a busy day or a staple feature of a Greek summer holiday. No matter what you call it, sharing a carafe or miniature bottle of ouzo is a quintessential Greek experience. While there are no rules about doing it properly, there are certainly ways of getting the most out of it.
Ouzo can is made from grape or grain-based alcohol, which is distilled with anise, fennel, and other herbs, according to the 'secret' formula of each producer. Its alcoholic content ranges from 38% to 48% volume. It is the presence of anethole in the anise that turns the transparent drink to a milky white color when mixed with water or ice cubes.
Tyrnavos in Thessaly was the first place in mainland Greece to make ouzo back in 1856. However, the area most associated with ouzo production is Plomari, a coastal village on the island of Lesvos. There are some 300 ouzo brands throughout the country, of which the best known are Ouzo Plomari, Ouzo Varbagianni, Mini Mytilinis, Ouzo 12, and Tsantali.
The best place to enjoy a drink (or two) of ouzo is at a seaside locale during the summer. However, the custom is not limited to the summer months, a quaint location or a time of day. Ouzo time may continue well into the afternoon or past the dinner hour– which in Greece is a very loose concept anyway.
The most critical factor in the ouzo drinking protocol is the company or parea in Greek. Greeks rarely drink alone and seldom without at least a nibble to eat. Without ordering it, you will usually be served a dish of a simple meze–olives, pickles, salami, cheese–along with your carafe of ouzo. Before you take a bite, clink glasses with your friends and say stin iyeiá mas, which means to our health.
Serious drinkers will order more meze dishes; those are likely to be salty, spicy or sour, to offset the slight sweetness and intensity of the ouzo! If all you want is an aperitif with a snack to precede a full lunch or dinner, these titbits will suffice. Making a meal of mezedes is another very Greek habit. Fish and seafood, fried or salted, rank highestbut garlicky vegetables, spicy meats, minty meatballs, and sausages also complement ouzo very well!
