We’ve all been there—knowing we need to work out but struggling to find the motivation to start. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just beginning your journey, getting into the right mindset can be one of the biggest challenges. The good news is, with a few simple strategies, you can boost your motivation and make getting active a regular part of your day. Here’s how:

1. Set Clear, Realistic Goals

Having a goal in mind makes it easier to stay motivated. Rather than aiming for something vague like “get fit,” set specific, measurable goals like “run 5k in 6 weeks” or “do 10 push-ups in a row.” Break them down into smaller milestones to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Each time you achieve one, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment, making it easier to keep going.

2. Create a Routine

Consistency is key when it comes to building a workout habit. Schedule your workouts at the same time each day, just like any other important appointment. Morning workouts are great for some people because they get it done before the day starts, while others prefer to wind down with exercise after work. Find what works for you and stick to it.

3. Get Your Gear Ready in Advance

Eliminate excuses by preparing your workout clothes and equipment ahead of time. If you plan to exercise in the morning, lay out your workout clothes the night before. If you're hitting the gym after work, pack your gym bag and have it ready to go. This simple act can make it easier to follow through with your plan.

4. Start Small & Build Up

If the thought of a full workout feels daunting, start small. Commit to just 10 minutes of exercise—once you're moving, you might find it easier to keep going. Often, the hardest part is getting started, and once you overcome that initial resistance, you'll be glad you did.

5. Find a Workout You Enjoy

You’re more likely to stay motivated if you actually enjoy the activity you're doing. If traditional gym workouts feel like a chore, experiment with different forms of exercise. Try dancing, swimming, hiking, yoga, or even group fitness classes. The key is to find something that feels less like a “workout” and more like fun.

6. Use Music or Podcasts as Motivation

Music can be a powerful motivator. Create a playlist of your favorite upbeat songs to get you energized. Alternatively, use your workout time to listen to an interesting podcast or audiobook. Focusing on something you enjoy can help distract you from the effort and make the time pass more quickly.

7. Reward Yourself

Incentives work wonders for motivation. Set up a reward system for reaching your workout goals. It could be something simple like treating yourself to a new fitness outfit, enjoying a movie night, or indulging in a relaxing bath after a tough session. The key is to associate working out with something positive.

Greek music has a rich history, shaped by centuries of cultural influences and marked by diverse genres that reflect the country’s complex social, political, and emotional landscape. From ancient folk songs to modern anthems, Greek music tells the story of a people with deep roots in tradition, love, struggle, and pride. In this article, we explore some of the most iconic Greek songs and musical traditions that every Greek—and music lover—should know.

The Sounds of the Rebetiko: Greece's Blues
Rebetiko (Ρεμπέτικο) is often called the "Greek blues." Born in the early 20th century, it emerged from the marginalized urban population—immigrants, prisoners, and the working class. Its lyrics delve into themes of hardship, love, exile, and resilience, often featuring instruments like the bouzouki, baglama, and guitar.

One of the most iconic Rebetiko songs is "Frangosyriani" by Markos Vamvakaris, often considered the father of Rebetiko. Its simple yet haunting melody captures the soul of this genre. Another essential figure in Rebetiko is Vassilis Tsitsanis, with songs like "Synefiasmeni Kyriaki" ("Cloudy Sunday"), which reflects the sorrow and struggle of post-war Greece.

Mikis Theodorakis: The Voice of Resistance & Hope

No list of iconic Greek music would be complete without mentioning Mikis Theodorakis, a towering figure in modern Greek music. His compositions often blend classical music with traditional Greek elements, and he is best known for turning the works of famous Greek poets into musical masterpieces.

One of his most famous pieces is "Zorba's Dance" from the film Zorba the Greek (1964). The vibrant, escalating tempo of the sirtaki dance captured the joy and vitality of Greek culture, becoming a global symbol of Greece. Another of his legendary works, "To Axion Esti", is a monumental composition based on the epic poetry of Odysseas Elytis, celebrating Greek identity, resilience, and spirituality.

Theodorakis also used his music as a form of resistance during Greece’s military junta (1967–1974), with songs like "To Yelasto Paidi" becoming anthems of political protest.

Manos Hadjidakis: Fusing East & West

Manos Hadjidakis is another giant of Greek music, known for blending Western classical styles with traditional Greek sounds. He composed music for films, theatre, and ballet, bringing Greek music to international audiences. His most famous piece is perhaps "Never on Sunday" from the film of the same name, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1960.

Hadjidakis’ compositions are lyrical and often sentimental, celebrating Greek folk traditions while pushing musical boundaries. His work, "Gioconda's Smile", is considered a masterpiece of orchestration and subtle emotion, offering a glimpse into the unique intersection of Greek and Western influences in his music.

The Laïko & Éntekhno Movements: Popular & Art Music

In the mid-20th century, two major genres emerged that still dominate Greek music today: Laïko (Λαϊκό) and Éntekhno (Έντεχνο). While Laïko represents the mainstream, popular music rooted in urban folk traditions, Éntekhno is a more intellectual genre that combines poetry and complex musical arrangements.

Stelios Kazantzidis is the undisputed king of Laïko. His deep, emotional voice gave life to songs about love, exile, and the pain of the Greek diaspora. One of his most iconic songs is "Efiges File", which captures the deep melancholy that characterizes much of Laïko music.

In contrast, Éntekhno’s most famous representative is Dionysis Savvopoulos, whose poetic lyrics and avant-garde compositions revolutionized Greek music in the 1960s. His song "Mia Thalassa Mikri" is a great example of how Éntekhno blends traditional sounds with a progressive, lyrical approach to songwriting.

Contemporary Greek Music: From Pop to Rock to Hip-Hop

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Greek music has diversified further, embracing modern genres like pop, rock, and even hip-hop while still keeping ties to traditional roots.

One of Greece’s most successful modern pop stars is Anna Vissi, whose career has spanned several decades. Her hit song "Dodeka" became an anthem of 90s Greek pop. Similarly, Sakis Rouvas, a household name in Greece, has gained international fame with songs like "Shake It", which he performed at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004. In the realm of rock, Pyx Lax (Πυξ Λαξ) stands out as one of the most beloved Greek rock bands, blending folk elements with rock and producing hits like "Ti Einai Afto Pou Mas Enonei" and "Epapses Agapi Na Thimizeis". For a younger generation, artists like Goin’ Through brought Greek hip-hop to the forefront, blending modern beats with socially conscious lyrics.

Traditional Greek Folk Music: The Legacy of the Dances

Finally, no exploration of iconic Greek music would be complete without recognizing the traditional folk songs and dances that are still performed at weddings, festivals, and celebrations across Greece. Dances like the kalamatianos, hasapiko, and tsamikos are central to Greek cultural life.

One particularly famous folk song is "Milo Mou Kokkino" (My Red Apple), a love song from Thessaly that continues to be sung at traditional gatherings. These songs, passed down through generations, embody the spirit of rural Greece, with themes of love, honor, and community.

Ancient Greece typically comes to mind as a beacon of intellectual achievement, democracy, and high culture. For centuries, it has inspired countless books, movies, and political philosophies. Yet, if we take a closer look at the reality of Ancient Greece, we will see that it was far more complex—and often much less ideal—than we’d like to believe.

Yes, Ancient Greece laid the groundwork for many modern concepts, but day-to-day life at the time was shaped by its own contradictions—exclusive politics, rigid gender roles, and philosophical ideas that wouldn’t necessarily align with many of the values of today.

This article explores some of the things about Ancient Greece that over time have been clouded by oversimplification, and romanticization with an intention to shed light on the importance of context, and seeing reality from its many perspectives.

1. Democracy: More Exclusive than Inclusive

One of the most common misunderstandings is the notion that Athens, often called the birthplace of democracy, was a shining example of "rule by the people." While it’s true that Athens developed the earliest form of democratic governance, this system was far from inclusive.

The idea that everyone in Athens could vote is far from the truth. In reality, only male citizens—about 10-20% of the population—were allowed to participate. Women, slaves, and foreigners were excluded from the political process. Athenians took their civic duty seriously, but democracy as they practiced it was a privilege enjoyed by a small minority. Even among men, participation required wealth, time, and education, leaving many citizens at a disadvantage.

This narrow version of democracy might surprise modern advocates of equality and representation. It reminds us that while Athens planted the seeds of democratic governance, it was quite different from the inclusive model we think of today.

2. Gender Roles: The Myth of the 'Progressive' Greek Woman

In modern portrayals, particularly in pop culture, Greek women are often depicted as powerful figures, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with men. However, the reality of their lives was far more restricted.

In most Greek city-states, women were expected to live highly sheltered lives. Their primary roles were within the household, where they were responsible for child-rearing and managing the domestic sphere. Athenian women were even barred from owning property independently or appearing in court without a male representative. Marriage, often arranged, marked their transition from being under their father’s authority to that of their husband.

Sparta, often depicted as an outlier, allowed women more freedom, especially in terms of physical training and property rights. However, even Spartan women were largely excluded from the political sphere. The idea of Greek woman being “liberated” was not ancient reality.

3. Philosophy: The Dark Side of the Thinkers

Names like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are synonymous with the birth of Western philosophy. We often imagine Ancient Greece as a golden age of intellectual freedom, yet the reality was far more complicated.

The philosophical achievements of these thinkers came at a time when critical thinking could be dangerous. Socrates, for instance, was sentenced to death by his fellow Athenians for "corrupting the youth" and impiety. His method of questioning authority and established norms was seen as a threat to the state. Meanwhile, Aristotle’s philosophy, which influenced Western thought for centuries, promoted views that we’d find troubling today. He argued that some people were “natural slaves,” thus justifying slavery as a natural and necessary part of society. He also believed women were biologically inferior to men—a perspective that was widely accepted in Greek culture at the time.

While Ancient Greek philosophy laid the groundwork for critical thinking and ethical debates, it was also deeply intertwined with the societal prejudices of its time.

4. Art and Architecture: Not All as Pure as Marble

The image of Ancient Greece is often one of stark white marble sculptures and temples, which over time created notions of purity and perfection. However, at the time of their creation, Greek temples, statues, and buildings were vibrantly painted in bright colors. Over time, these pigments faded, leaving the pristine white marble we’re familiar with today.

In fact, the Ancient Greeks adored color. Archaeologists have discovered traces of red, blue, and gold on many ancient statues and temples. The Parthenon, the enduring symbol of classical architecture, was once decorated with bright murals and ornaments.

5. Greek Mythology: Not Just Epic Heroes & Gods

Greek mythology is a treasure trove of epic battles, powerful gods, and heroic quests. Today, we often focus on figures like Zeus, Athena, and Hercules, celebrating how strong and cunning they were. Yet, these myths were more than just entertainment for the Greeks—they were a way to explain the chaotic and often brutal realities of their world.

The gods of Olympus were not benevolent figures—they were capricious, vengeful, and often unjust. Zeus, the king of the gods, frequently abused his power, and many myths revolve around the tragic consequences of the gods’ whims. Take the story of Prometheus, who was punished for giving fire to humanity, or the tale of Icarus, whose wings melted when he flew too close to the sun. These stories remind us that the Greeks didn’t view their gods as moral role models, but rather as forces to be feared.

Additionally, the lives of many mythological figures, such as women like Medea and Pandora, reflect the misogyny of the time, portraying them as destructive or foolish. These stories were not just allegories—they were reflections of the Greek worldview at the time.

Ancient Greece Within Context

While Ancient Greece has gifted the world with extraordinary ideas and innovations, it's important to remember that these were ancient times, far removed from the standards and ideals we hold today. In many ways, the Greeks were progressive for their era, pioneering democracy, philosophy, and art that have had a lasting influence on Western civilization. However, we should acknowledge their achievements without ignoring the complexities and limitations of society at that time. By acknowledging both the progress and the imperfections, we gain a more nuanced understanding of reality.

Teachers Needed For Research Survey On ADHD

XpatAthens is seeking the participation of teachers, inside and outside of Greece, for a survey exploring the relationship between teachers and children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

One of our team members is currently pursuing her postgraduate degree and, as part of her dissertation, is investigating how teacher-child relationships influence ADHD symptoms in school-aged children.

The survey is specifically targeted at teachers who have taught children aged 6-12 with ADHD (diagnosed or presumed). This can include educators from various backgrounds—whether they've taught general subjects, music, foreign languages, or provided tutoring and private lessons.

All teachers are welcome to participate, although the survey is in Greek.

Thank you for your consideration, time, and honest contribution to this important research. Your insights will be invaluable in understanding the dynamics of teacher-student interactions and their impact on children with ADHD.

Autumn in Athens means there’s still time to bask in the warmth of the last sun-drenched days. With the city glowing in golden hues and the temperatures still perfect for outdoor activities, now is the time to embrace the beauty of Athens before the cooler months arrive. Whether you're a local or a visitor, here are some unique ways to enjoy the final warm days of autumn in the Greek capital.

1. Catch a Movie at Cine Paris – Athens' Beloved Open-Air Cinema

One of the best ways to embrace the warm autumn evenings is by watching a film under the stars at Cine Paris. Nestled in the charming Plaka district, with the Acropolis dramatically illuminated in the background, one of the city's most iconic open-air cinemas creates a one-of-a-kind movie experience.

The next two weeks promise an especially exciting lineup, making it the perfect time to visit. Be sure to catch "Sex" and the chilling thriller "Speak No Evil", two standout selections that are drawing audiences in with their intense storylines. And don’t miss the much-anticipated premiere of "Joker 2: Folie à Deux" on October 2nd—a haunting sequel that’s been eagerly awaited by fans.

While you're there, elevate your evening with one of Cine Paris’ signature cocktails. The Paloma, a refreshing mix of tequila, grapefruit soda, and lime, is a perfect companion for a night of cinema under the Athenian sky. With a warm blanket, a cool cocktail, and a thrilling film, Cine Paris is an essential stop before the outdoor cinema season comes to a close.

2. Watch a Concert at an Open-Air Theatre

Athens boasts a number of historic and atmospheric open-air venues, perfect for catching live music as the sun sets and the city lights twinkle. Two of the most spectacular venues to enjoy a concert are the Lycabettus Theatre and the Theatre of Herodes Atticus.

Lycabettus Theatre
, perched atop Mount Lycabettus, offers panoramic views of Athens. Imagine watching your favorite artist perform with the backdrop of the city skyline, fading into twilight. The theatre hosts a variety of performances, from classical music to modern concerts, all under the Athenian sky.

Meanwhile, the Theatre of Herodes Atticus, nestled on the slopes of the Acropolis, is an ancient marvel where you can experience live performances surrounded by history. The acoustics and architecture make for an unforgettable evening, especially when the weather is still balmy and welcoming.

3. Enjoy Drinks with a View on a Rooftop Terrace

For a more laid-back way to enjoy Athens' final warm days, why not head to one of the city's many rooftop bars? With the autumn air still pleasant, it’s the perfect time to sip on a cocktail while admiring the sweeping views of the Acropolis or Lycabettus Hill.

Popular rooftop spots include A for Athens, located in Monastiraki Square, where you can enjoy a drink while gazing at the Parthenon as it lights up at night. Or, try Couleur Locale, a hidden gem with a relaxed vibe and stunning views. As the temperature dips slightly, you can cozy up with a light sweater and relish in the lively atmosphere of Athenian rooftops.

4. Take a Swim at the Athenian Riviera

One of the perks of Athens’ proximity to the coast is the possibility of taking a dip in the sea, even in autumn. The Athenian Riviera offers a stunning stretch of coastline, dotted with organized beaches and secluded coves where you can swim, sunbathe, or just stroll along the shore.

The water remains warm enough for swimming well into October, making this the perfect opportunity for a refreshing escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Head to Vouliagmeni Beach for crystal-clear waters and a relaxed vibe, or explore the scenic beauty of Astir Beach or Asteria Glyfada if you're looking for a more luxurious experience.

1974 & 1944: Athens Celebrates Its Freedom

The Municipality of Athens continues its celebratory program "1974 & 1944: Athens Celebrates its Freedom" with a variety of exhibitions, discussions, film screenings, music events, historical and theatrical tours, dance performances, and theatrical shows throughout the city center and its neighborhoods.

Having launched successfully in June and drawing large crowds throughout the summer, the program now extends into November, honoring two major anniversaries for the city: the 80th anniversary of the city's liberation from German occupation in 1944, and the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in 1974. Through cultural and educational activities, the event offers a journey into the city’s rich historical memory, with the support of cultural organizations like the City of Athens Cultural, Sports and Youth Organization (OPANDA) and Technopolis.

Key Events

At the heart of the celebration is the major historical exhibition "1974 & 1944: Athens Celebrates its Freedom" at the OPANDA Arts Center in Freedom Park, running until October 28. Visitors can explore more than 500 rare artifacts, including photographs, audiovisual materials, documents, artwork, and personal items that reflect the emotions Athenians experienced during the festive days of '44 and '74. There are free guided tours every Thursday evening and daily school tours aimed at cultivating historical awareness in young people. The exhibition, organized by Technopolis in collaboration with the Archives of Contemporary Social History (ASKI), Greece’s General State Archives, and the City of Athens Historical Archive, offers a deep dive into this pivotal period.

In October, the program will also include the dance segment "Athens Dances for its Freedom," featuring performances inspired by the exhibition. These site-specific works include "They Leave" by Prolet OCD (Oct. 13), "The Possibility of Democracy" by Creo Dance Company (Oct. 19), and others.

Artistic &  Musical Highlights

From September 26 to November 3, the Athens Municipal Gallery will host "The Restoration of Optimism," a visual arts exhibition focused on the themes of democracy and dialogue, featuring works from both established and contemporary artists. In a special event on November 1, students from the Greek State School of Dance will perform a dance interpretation of the exhibition, while the City of Athens Choir will perform on November 2. Another notable exhibit, "Democracy and Conflicts," runs from October 3 to November 17, delving into the meaning of democracy and the struggles that shaped it.

The commemoration also includes significant musical events, such as a free performance of Beethoven's opera "Fidelio" at the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre "Maria Callas" on October 12, mirroring a symbolic performance from 1944. On October 15, the Lycabettus Theater will host the grand concert "Nothing is Lost: 50 Years of Songs for a Better World," featuring beloved artists across generations.

Theater & Historical Tours

Three major theatrical performances will further enrich the program, such as the immersive "Sketches from Korai 4, 1941-1944" in the underground space of Korai 4 and the moving "When the Statues Left" for young students. Historical and theatrical walking tours will guide participants through key landmarks and lesser-known stories of Athens’ fight for freedom.

Public Discussions & Film Screenings

The Freedom Park will host a series of public discussions on topics like the role of gender and sexuality during the post-dictatorship era, and the solidarity movements of 1967-1974. A rich lineup of documentaries will also be screened, including Michael Cacoyannis’ "Attila '74" and rare footage from the Greek Resistance.
