The Museum of Cycladic Art, the Regional Services of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports (Ephorates of Antiquities of Chania, Rethymno, and Herakleion) and the Region of Crete are co-organizing the exhibition entitled “Crete. Emerging cities: Aptera ― Eleutherna ― Knossos. Three ancient cities revived” from 12 December 2018 to 30 April 2019. This is a multi-faceted exhibition with rich audio-visual aids, including screens, maps, and innovative technologies.

The exhibition focuses on three of Crete’s one-hundred cities, according to Homer (hekatompolis), and their common characteristics: their establishment, acme, decline, destruction, abandonment, and demise. Cities with centuries-long history, cities that were abandoned and forgotten, but are also tangible examples of archaeological investigation using similar or different approaches.

The exhibition comprises approximately 500 artefacts dating from the Neolithic (7th-6th millennium BC) to the Byzantine period (8th century AD), some newly discovered, others from old excavations, most of them never presented to the public before: statues, reliefs, figurines, inscriptions, vases, weapons, jewellery, coins, and other artefacts of various materials—limestone, marble, clay, metal (bronze, iron, silver, and gold), faience, glass, ivory, and semi-precious stones. This is the first time that so many artefacts leave the storerooms of the Antiquities Ephorates and display cases of the museums of Crete for a temporary exhibition in Athens.

5 Years Of Impact - Impact Hub Athens

Impact Hub Athens 2013 - 2018.
We are counting 5 years of positive social impact and we keep going!
#5YearsOfImpact

It was the summer of 2013, when Impact Hub Athens opened its doors on Karaiskaki Street in Psyrri. Our aim is to create a dynamic community of individuals and organizations that through business actions could have a positive social impact both in Greece and abroad through the global network of the Impact Hub. Since then, ideas such as "social entrepreneurship" and "social innovation" have sounded loud and the pursuit of positive social impact has entered the central social and political dialogue. And on that, we also contributed.

By establishing a collaborative space that has already hosted 700 members, we have satisfied the conditions for creative people to meet, connect, collaborate, co-create. Impact Hub Athens has been the starting point for about 200 socially oriented business initiatives that have been supported and have taken their first steps, while at the same time Impact Hub has acted as an incubator and as accelerator for 100 emerging social businesses. Moreover, through our actions, more than 600,000 € has been invested in social enterprises and 150 new jobs have been created.

The people we met all these years helped us shape our stigma while the moments that designated us are many and difficult to record. But if we wanted to distinguish some points, the following would be:

- The social economy exhibitions (1st & 2nd EXPO Κ.AL.Ο. November 2017, November 2018) organized together with the Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Social Solidarity, giving a substantial impetus to the cooperation and dialogue between the members of the Greek ecosystem of social entrepreneurship.

- The assignment of the management of the Kypseli Municipal Market, which came as a recognition of our experience in the development of active groups, the re-use of spaces, the positive imprint in the neighborhood we are participating in. In the Agora, with the main pillars of culture, education and, of course, social entrepreneurship, we promote social cohesion and citizen participation, and we have helped more than 200 vulnerable social groups.

- Collaboration with institutions such as Robert & Bosch and MitOst regarding the Kypseli Municipal Market which resulted in organizing the Cine-Mageiremata and the Super Kypseli, and will soon be developed into independent organizations. Also, the cooperation with WWF to implement programs that link entrepreneurship with environmental protection, and with Allianz to promote the social inclusion of children and young people. Furthermore, with the Onassis Stegi Foundation and the US Embassy in Athens for the program "Hack The Camp", which became thespringboard for creating new foundations in the lives of young refugees and the occasion to design new programs.

- The major European programs we participate in are dealing with serious social problems. One of them, HYDROUSA, provides innovative cyclical economy solutions for water management in the islands.

- The Kypseli Music - a program for children and young people using El Sistema's global methodology and music as a tool for social inclusion and empowerment of vulnerable social groups.

- And, of course, a top distinction: The IVLP Alumni Social Innovation & Change Award, awarded for the collective work of Impact Hub Athens, during the global meeting of Global Ties U.S. 2018 in Washington DC.

Having completed 5 impactful years, we welcome the “new era”. Anyone who is currently entering the Impact Hub Athens building and meeting the social entrepreneurs who have their office there, anyone who attends the events that take place here and participates in our actions, will acquire a very good preview of the modern and the dynamic that is currently happening in Greece, and will be in direct dialogue with the respective foreign communities.

And now, it is the moment, Impact Hub Athens community, that first talked about social entrepreneurship, to discuss,- with researchers from leading universities, creative professionals and actors from all over the world - what will determine the evolution of the social ecosystem in the next 5 years. It is the time to design along with the growing domestic community the guidelines for the next steps to maximize the positive social impact, the steps that will further affect social changes and will lead us over the upcoming 5 years.

On 28, 29 and 30 March 2019, during the # 5yearsofimpact, which will take place at Impact Hub Athens and the Kypseli Municipal Market, we will discuss what is currently occuring and will be crucial to us in the years to come in the areas of social innovation , urbanism, activism, technology and the cyclical economy.

What is emerging? Why is social innovation and entrepreneurship vital for the following 5 years? Where do we need to devote our potential and what are the most effective tools to contribute to positive change? Soon we will discover it together!

The National Hellenic Museum (NHM) presented The Trial of Hippocrates in a live courtroom debate at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Chicago, on February 20. Following the acclaimed NHM Trials of Antigone, Socrates, and The Parthenon Marbles, the museum once again partnered with prominent judges and attorneys to take-on another ancient case, The Trial of Hippocrates.

The Case

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was called to the bedside of the dying King of Thebes. The physician immediately concluded that the King’s illness was incurable. Nevertheless, the King insisted that Hippocrates treat him and offered gold and gifts in return. Hippocrates agreed. Despite Hippocrates’ treatments, the King’s health declined and he soon died. Hippocrates was arrested and brought before the King’s son and heir. Hippocrates had sworn to “help the sick but never with a view to injury and wrong-doing.”
The National Hellenic Museum asks: Did Hippocrates violate his own Oath?

Arguments from both prosecution and defense were convincing and many people in the audience stated the case was a moral and professional challenge. In the end, the verdict of the jury breakdown was three Guilty and nine Not Guilty among the jury of twelve esteemed jurors. Additionally, the jury’s verdict was reinforced when the scales of justice were literally tipped to Not Guilty by the majority of the audience voting chips.

“This truly unique event brings Hellenism alive, including our love of learning by prompting critical thinking and citizen involvement in decision making. It’s not every day that we as ordinary individuals get to listen to some of the best attorneys in the state argue a case with all the authentic drama as if it’s an official trial. At the end of the courtroom presentations last night, our audience came together as was done in ancient times, each casting their individual ballot, which resulted in a Not Guilty verdict. Although an ancient story, questioning the quality of healthcare at the end of life is still being debated today, just as it was thousands of years ago,” said NHM President Dr. Laura Calamos.

Exodus Dance performance - Roes Theatre

Athanasia Kanellopoulou presents her latest art project, Exodus at Roes Theatre!

Choreographed and directed by Kanellopoulou herself, Exodus is a dance performance where six people struggle against a state of dissolution and chaos. Exodus will be performed at the Roes Theatre (12, 13, 18, 19 & 20 March 2019).

Kanellopoulou’s work is focused on issues around identity, social gender, and socio-political affairs, in the context of contemporary art. Exodus has been subsidized by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports for 2018/19.

About the piece:

Exodus is an artistic response to the 1989 novel “The Melancholy of Resistance”, written by Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, whereby main characters are led to their self-destruction as their attempts for revolutionary acts fall short. The piece attempts to confront the existing societal and individual dominant structures.

The performance unfolds through small, fragmented revolutionary acts, where collective and personal identities must first be decomposed and then find the exit or “exodus” toward redemption and fulfilment.

Exodus acts as a narrative to this journey. The dancers’ bodies are in a gradual rebellion, building into remnants of ruins, searching the cell of their own History.

It is in fact a small society that resists absurdity; throbbing with the strings of change, in search of a temporary, yet immediate, calmness.

How many borders and bridges should they cross to reach the final destination? How many walls should they break and how many circles should they create to find their buried History?

Madame Phu Man Chu is an exciting new entry to the Athenian gastronomy and nightlife scene. The brain child of a peculiar trio, a Vietnamese chef, a French architect and a Greek musician/entrepreneur, Madame Phu Man Chu is the funkiest tiny Vietnamese restaurant in town.

The space is small but nicely decorated in an oriental mix and match style; there’s silk lanterns, an Asian paper dragon on the ceiling, and a porcelain bust of Ho Chi Minh by the entrance.

At Madame Phu Man Chu expect to become part of the action, there are no tables and the bar stools face the kitchen giving customers full sight of the food preparation! The menu is small and the dishes are meant to be shared, sort of like an Asian ‘tapas’ restaurant. The introductory tasting menu costs €25 – we were 3 people and were more than happy to share 2 tasting menus between us. We tasted crispy spring rolls, succulent beef skewers, delicious fried tofu, Vietnamese style mussels, and fish; everything was well prepared and very yummy!

The service at Madame Phu Man Chu is warm, friendly and welcoming, making it the sort of place you’d like to pop in after work for quick drink and a little bite. Essentially, it’s a great addition to the re-vitalizing of the Athenian night scene.

Since opening its doors in 2017, the SNFCC has become a favorite destination for Athenians. Its gardens attract families with young children, its unique activities and workshops are usually fully booked long in advance, the library is a haven for scholars and bibliophiles, while the new Greek National Opera is an aesthetic and technological masterpiece.

According research conducted for the SNFCC and published by Kathimerini, “The SNFCC is most popular with visitors in the 18-29 and 30-44 age groups, which mostly includes families who take advantage of activities and the various SNFCC playgrounds. Most visitors go to the SNFCC to take a stroll in the park, have a coffee or a bite to eat, or to attend a cultural performance—primarily concerts or performances at the Greek National Opera. Visitors provided a positive evaluation of the SNFCC overall (99%), as well as in specific areas like cleanliness (99%) and visitor experience (90%)…”

Regarding the SNFCC’s great success with the Greek public, the cultural center’s CEO Nikos Manolopoulos said, “The public has embraced the creation of a unique project of cultural significance and environmental sensibility. The inhabitants of Attica in particular keep coming back to the SNFCC, validating the way it operates with their visits. We owe deep gratitude to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, its Board of Directors and staff, and especially to its co-President, Andreas Dracopoulos, for the continued and active support and encouragement they provide to the SNFCC. We would also like to thank the Ministry of Finance for the exemplary way in which it oversees the project and the support it offers to the SNFCC.”

In 2018 alone, the SNFCC received 5.3 million visits, a high mark since its opening, fulfilling SNF's vision for a public space that is open and accessible to all!
