Our Favorite Kid-Friendly Activities in Athens
Athens is a large metropolis that might not seem particularly kid-friendly at first sight. However, despite what most people think there are lots of exciting things to do and see with your children in Athens. Home to numerous museums, parks, and playgrounds, the Greek capital provides endless options for a fun and educational family outing.
Here are some of our favorite children’s activities in and around the center of Athens:
Athens Happy Train

To enjoy a great sightseeing tour of the historical center of Athens, all you need to do is hop aboard the Athens Happy Train. This toy-like street train starts from Syntagma Square and will take you and your family around the most famous sight and landmarks of the city. You can even transform the 40-minute tour into a day trip by hopping on and off and exploring your favorite monuments and attractions along the way.

Visiting the Planetarium is a great opportunity to familiarize your children with complex concepts in a fun and interactive way. Kids love the huge domed screen, the amphitheatrical auditorium, and of course the state-of-the-art interactive shows that take place in the Planetarium. It's a fun and educational outing for the whole family.

Hellenic Children’s Museum

Located inside the Athens Conservatoire, this museum aims to teach children all about the world they live in. Its philosophy is based on the phrase ‘I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand therefore its activities include things like creating with building materials, experimenting with different ingredients in the kitchen, and learning about the concepts of supply and demand in the museum’s marketplace.

Flisvos Park Playground

Located near the Flisvos Marina, this playground is one of the best in Athens. It covers an area of almost 13 acres and offers various exciting activities. The park is divided into several sections; one for children aged 2 to 5, one for children up to 12 years old, walking and cycling paths, mini soccer, and basketball facilities, and an outdoor gym! Just a step from the sea and full of exciting games and constructions, the Flisvos Park Playground is ideal for a fun family outing.

Goulandris Natural History Museum

Focused on the study, conservation, and protection of the natural environment, the Goulandris Natural History Museum will certainly impress children of all ages. The museum's collection is focused on botanology, entomology, minerals, paleontology, and marine biology and includes hundreds of thousands of specimens. Children will be impressed by the life-sized replicas of animals and rare plant species that will help them comprehend the earth’s ever-changing ecosystem. The museum is also home to the Gaia Centre and the unique ‘Geosphere’ monitor, which presents the geological evolution of the planet from its creation, 4.6 billion years ago, until today.

Athens’ Revival Of Theatrou Square
As part of the municipality's urban overhaul program that aims to bring life back to the inner-city neighborhoods, Athens' has revived its Theatrou Square, which is off the central Varvakeios Market.
The first seven shops as part of the POLI² pilot project, which subsidizes neighborhood upgrade and renovation projects, have opened for business.
At the recent announcement of the shops opening, the mayor highlighted the symbolic meaning saying, "Light always drives darkness away. That’s what we are doing now on Theatrou Square near the central market, which will also be carried out at the Merchant’s Arcade on Voulis St."
The selection process of businesses lasted four months, including the renovation of the shops and handing these over to the winning teams, which are Astika Motiva, Niroi, I Love Athens, Creators of Cosmos, Book & Play, COCO-Mat.bike, and O Horos.

Monastery of Kaisariani
A short 30 minute drive from Monastiraki or the northern suburbs, the Monastery of Kai-sariani is a breathtaking site of the Monastery of Kaisariani. A few minutes off the highway, and you’re into pure forestry bliss. You can visit the monastery, take a botanic walk and soak in the remarkable views!
Tsagkarada to Damouchari
A three hour drive from Athens is Tsagkarada in Thessaly. A fun hike from the village down to Damouchari (where they filmed the famous Dancing Queen scene in Mamma Mia!) takes a couple of hours. Amazing scenery and adventure – almost like no other place in Greece.
Palamidi Castle in Nafplio
There are almost 1000 steps to reach Palamidi Castle in Nafplio – but every single step offers endless views of this beautiful seaside town. You can reach Napflio and get hiking in about 2 hours from Athens.

Sports Unite People ~ Navarino Challenge 2018
More than 2,500 people from 36 countries joined the annual sports event participating in 28 activities within 50 hours!
The multi-awarded sports tourism event “Navarino Challenge” took place in Messinia and Costa Navarino for the 6th consecutive year, 12- 14 October. The event’s key message this year was “sports unite people”!
More than 2,500 professional and amateur athletes of all ages enjoyed a rich program of 28 activities. The event, hosted by The Westin Resort Costa Navarino , promoted the Olympic Spirit and “Fair Play” for another year, while supporting the fight against childhood obesity through exercise and the Mediterranean diet.
“Navarino Challenge” brought together athletes, families and children from 36 countries, including, among others Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Lebanon, Netherlands, Norway, Qatar, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, Ukraine, USA.
The full schedule of the event included activities for the whole family within 3 days. One of the biggest online gaming companies worldwide, Bwin, consistent with its efforts to enhance Greek sports, supported the event as the Grand Sponsor of this year's Navarino Challenge. By promoting actions of public good, Bwin recognizes the goal of Navarino Challenge, which is to raise awareness on the issue of childhood obesity and to promote physical and mental well-being through the message “sports unite people”.
On Friday, October 12, Bwin welcomed the participants of Navarino Challenge by organizing the Bwin Welcome Party with the voice of Penny Baltatzi, in retro swing and jazz music rhythms.
On Saturday, October 13, the swimming action was held in the Municipality of Pylos- Nestor that supported the event for another year and helped in the smooth implementation of the activities at Navarino Bay. The athletes covered the 2.8 km open water swimming race by Vikos, designed by the Federal Swimming Coach and technical director of the event, Nikos Gemelos. The race was held for the first time with timing and was completed with absolute safety with the approval of the Hellenic Swimming Federation and according to FINA’s open water swimming regulations, with the presence of major athletes of the Greek national open water swimming team such as George Arniakos, Dimitris Negris, Dejan Jovanovic, Anastasia Kyrili, Stellina Aplanti, Konstantinos Konstantineskou and Maria Kirykou, as well as George and Timos Skotadis, the twin Greek expatriates racing with the colors of the national team of Netherlands.
The swimming action also marked the beginning of the “Navarinia” event for the 191-year anniversary from the Battle of Navarino, which will culminate this week. All race results can be found here!
The event was a member of the Global Swim Series (GSS) which includes races from 37 countries around the world.
“Navarino Challenge” presented for the third time the Stand Up Paddling relay race by BIC® Sport . The fun course for SUP beginners and professionals was the best option for the acquaintance of the sport in the waters of the Ionian Sea. BIC® with its continuous presence in the field of water sports supported the event. The race was carried out with the support of the surf club, Surf Salad.
After the finish of the SUP race, a demonstration race with Optimist and Laser boats was held by the Maritime Athletic Pylos Association “Nestor”.
All water sports were supported by the following partners: Pylos Port Authority, Poseidonia, Lifeguard Patrol, Pylos Association of Enterprises for Tourism Development, Maritime Athletic Pylos Association “Nestor”, Explore Messinia, Hellenic Rescue Team, Karalis City Hotel & Spa, Karalis Beach Hotel.
On Saturday night, the official airline partner Qatar Airways welcomed the guests on the special night “A Night to Remember by Qatar Airways”. On a splendid evening with the presence of Peloponnese Regional Governor Petros Tatoulis and Mayor of Pylos-Nestor, Mr. Dimitris Kafantaris, Qatar Airways honored great personalities from the global sports industry.
The event was presented by the legendary basketball player Joe Arlauckas with the actor Youlika Skafida and the talented musician Elena Charbila (Kid Moxie), under the jazz rhythms of the musician Adam Tsarouchis. Within the framework of the event honorable awards were given to successful athletes who have been distinguished worldwide.
In particular, the leading Greek former basketball player and coach Panagiotis Giannakis was honored by Peloponnese Regional Governor, Mr. Petros Tatoulis and Mr. Achilles Constantakopoulos, President of TEMES, followed by Joe Arlauckas awarded by the Country Manager Greece & Cyprus Qatar Airways, Mrs. Theresa Cissell. The Greek national volleyball player who holds the record of participations in the Greek National Team, Michalis Trantafillidis received the third award of the night from Head of B2B & Operators Sales Samsung, Mr. Aris Markou.
During the event the following awards were given; the Olympic and European Champion at 400m. with hurdles Periklis Iakovakis was awarded by the Marketing & Communications Manager VIKOS SA Mrs. Natassa Krenz and Mayor of Pylos-Nestor Mr. Dimitris Kafantaris, the twice silver Olympic medalist in taekwondo Alexandros Nikolaidis was awarded from the President and Managing Director of Ford Motor Hellas Mr. Nikos Notaras while the ultramarathon Dean Karnazes was awarded by the Bwin representative Mr. Yannis Kapodistrias. Qatar Airways had another surprise, drawing a set of two airline tickets to any destination of its world network, while throughout the weekend Qatar Airways conducted a special contest for all participants through its special application created for the Puzzle Challenge game. “A Night to Remember by Qatar Airways” was assisted by Kayak, Karoulias, Lafazanis, Nestor and Dimiourgies, while the specially designed awards of the event, which included names of ancient Messinian Olympic athletes, were created by Antonis Palles.
On Sunday October 14th , professional and amateur runners tried their best on the beautiful running routes of 5km (running & dynamic walking) 10km and the Ford Go Further Half Marathon (21.1km).
Starting from Navarino Dunes of Costa Navarino, professional and amateur athletes run along the coast to Pylos crossing the beautiful Voidokilia beach following the path that Telemachus traced to seek Odysseus according to the Homeric tradition. “Navarino Challenge” was included in World’s Marathons world community with runners from the Sport Club with people with special needs from Kalamata, “Diaforozo”, celebrating their participation at the event one day before the International White Cane Day (October 15th).

The Ford Go Further Half Marathon was held with the participation of Dean Karnazes, while a special finisher t-shirt was offered with a design of Pylos Castle.

The three-day schedule included activities such as: taekwondo (with Olympic medalist Alexandros Nikolaidis and the numerous participations of TaeKwonDo teams, among others, from Kalamata and Kyparissia), kids’ athletics (in Pylos and Costa Navarino with Periklis Iakovakis. An action that has been developed by a special panel of scientists from IAAF [International Association of Athletics Federation] and is officially implemented in Greece by the Hellenic Athletics Federation [SEGAS] in cooperation with the Ministry of Education), beachathlon (with Periklis Iakovakis), beach volley lessons by Samsung and King & Queen Beach Volley Tournament by Samsung (with Michalis Triantafyllidis and supported by Triantafyllidis Beach Arena), 4on4 basketball tournament (with the participation of the athletes Joe Arlauckas and Alexandros Nikolaidis) climbing and bike ride at Voidokilia by HSBC (supported by Navarino Outdoors), pilates (with physical education instructor, Mandy Persaki), golf by Qatar Airways (supported by Navarino Golf Academy), kick boxing (with champion Alexandros Nikolaidis), baby swimming and aqua aerobic (supported by Swim Academy and Red Swim Academy), group cycling (spinning challenge with Tess Arlauckas), tennis cross training (supported by Navarino Racquet Academy), boxing (with Christos Gatsis and supported by Vizantinos target sport club), high intensity training, beach yoga and crossfit (with Dimitris Moros and supported FitnessArt).
For the second consecutive year “Navarino Challenge” had Samsung as the event’s official technology partner. This year the event also innovated with its “Live the Challenge” campaign implemented on Instagram during the days of the event, presenting the participants’ experience in real- time and POV content.

Ford Motor Hellas promoted sports and “fair play” as the event’s official sponsor and supported the efforts of the fight against childhood obesity while promoting healthy diet by participating for another year in the support team of “Navarino Challenge”. For the fifth consecutive year, athletes and organizers moved with the safety and efficient engines of the cars of Ford Motor Hellas.
Navarino Challenge cooperared for the first time with HSBC, one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organizations. As an official banking partner, HSBC supported this year's event, conducted a contest and was the exclusive sponsor of the bike activity (Bike ride at Voidokilia by HSBC).

Athens 2018: World Book Capital ~ The Nordic Narrative
The embassies and institutes of the Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland) have joined forces to present themselves to the public, under the name they share as an alliance.
The event is about the NORDICS, a union of states and people, who will hold presentations, discusssions and workshops included in ''Athens 2018: World Book Capital''.
All under the title ''The Nordic Narrative''.

Surprise 9 - Call For Artists
artAZ, the Greek Art Platform for the promotion of Contemporary Art, is inviting artists to submit small format artworks for the 9th SURPRISE benefit exhibition for the support of the homeless of Greece.
SURPRISE is a campaign that mobilizes the power of art to offer help in major social issues. The exhibition is a collective effort of the artistic community; since 2009 more than 2000 artists have contributed their works to the campaign.
Each edition of SURPRISE features ~300 artists. All artworks are small format, are offered for the same symbolic price, and are signed at the back. The artist’s identity gets revealed only after the artwork is sold, hence the "surprise".
The next edition of SURPRISE will take place in Athens, Greece, opening 23 November 2018.
Submissions are accepted until 15 November 2018.

4th Santorini Experience Rising Global Interest
More than 6.000 visitors from 45 countries in Santorini
Santorini was the global benchmark for professional and amateur athletes, escorts and visitors who traveled to the enchanting island the 4th Santorini Experience this October 2018.
The top sports tourism event in Greece was a complete success and had a record number of participants in the running and swimming races, gathering more than 6,000 visitors in Santorini. In fact, 60% of the visitors stayed in Santorini for more than 5 nights.
For one more year, foreign participants surpassed every precedent, as Santorini “hosted” athletes from a total of 45 countries from the 5 continents, America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. Specifically, swimmers and runners were from Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, USA, Russia, Qatar, South Africa, United Kingdom, Japan and China.
World class names as well as the elite of the Greek national open water swimming team were present!
The top Hungarian swimmer Attila Manyoki, who excels in open water swimming races with several wins and is a member of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF), returned for another year at the event that a part of the Global Swim Series (GSS).
Along with him, the British twice silver Olympic medalist, at the Rio Olympics in 2016, Jazz Carlin swam for the first time, as well as the twin Greek expatriates racing with the colors of the national team of Netherlands, George and Timos Skotadis. The elite of the Greek national team along with top professional athletes had a dynamic presence in the swimming race. The national team consisted of George Arniakos, Dimitris Negris, Stellina Aplanti, Dejan Giovanovic, Dimitris Manios, Irene Diakoumakou, Maria Filopoulou, Maria Liossi, Anastasia Kyrili, Konstantinos Konstantineskou, Panagiotis Alogakos, Maria Kirykou, Triantafyllia Diakoumakou, Marianota Elmali and Melina Trochalaki.

The federal coach and technical director of the 1.5 miles (2,4km) open water swimming by Vikos, Nikos Gemelos applied FINA's regulations on Sunday, October 7 th , and implemented the race with the approval of the Hellenic Swimming Federation, following all safety rules. At the same time, the event took care of the amateur athletes with the addition of the safety buoy, of high standards and quality. The swimmers started in two groups from the volcano ending their race at the old port of Fira, having the imposing view of the island in front of them. Men’s winner was Dimitris Negris, George Arniakos finished 2 nd and Dejan Jovanovic in the 3 rd place. In women, Olympic medalist Jazz Carlin was 1 st , Irene Diakoumakou finished 2 nd and Maria Filopoulou came 3 rd .

For the safety of the race, 50 specialized escorts were present in the water with the help of the Lifeguard Patrol, the people of Santorini who assisted with their own boats, the Voluntary Lifeguards of Santorini, Atlantis Dive Center, Mediterranean Dive Club, Santorini Nautical Club and most of all the Boatmen Union Santorini that carried the athletes to the volcano and helped in the smooth implementation of the open water swimming race.
On Saturday, October 6, the 15km, 10km and 5km “Aristides Alafouzos” running races were held. All routes started from the desalination plant in Oia, with parts of trail track and a background of the magnificent images from the volcano overlooking the Caldera, as well as the settlements of Imerovigli, Firostefani, Oia and with a finish in Oia. The running routes are designed by the former marathon runner, Greek classic route record holder, running trainer and director of All About Running, Nikos Polias. “Santorini Experience” has joined the World’s Marathons global community.
It should be highlighted that many athletes decided to run for the joy of sports with no timing. In terms of the social events, Municipal Sports Cultural Environmental Organization of Santorini (DAPPOS) hosted an open concert with the Greek-German artist FIONA, in the surrounding area of the Indoor Hall DAPPOS, on Saturday October 6. A little bit earlier the International Dancing Group of Santorini “Stamatina Xiarchou” & Association of Pontians Eptamyloi Serres “Akrites” opened the concert.
On Friday, October 5, on the occasion of Santorini Experience, Samsung (as the official technology partner), in cooperation with the local Kotsovolos store, organized the event “Kotsovolos and Samsung present the Hotel of the Future” at the conference hall of DAPPOS informing the island’s hoteliers of all the latest developments and the benefits of technology in their industry. Samsung enriched the experience of those participating and attending the event with the innovative Samsung Galaxy ecosystem services, such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, coupled with the Gear 360, the Gear VR and unique 360 degrees content.

Participants traveled to “Santorini Experience”, with the official airline partner of the event, Ryanair, which offered the connection of Athens with Santorini with direct flights from abroad. The Greek leading shipping company Blue Star Ferries as a sponsor of the event facilitated the ferry connection offering a 50% discount on the ferry tickets and the participants’ vehicles, assisting a total of Greek and foreign athletes while offering an additional discount on the connection with the Cyclades and Dodecanese group of islands, resulting in participations from the islands of Paros, Naxos, Amorgos, Rhodes and others. Ford Motor Hellas promoted sports and “fair play” by participating for the 4 th year in the support team of “Santorini Experience”. Athletes and organizers moved with the safety and efficient Ford Motor Hellas cars, the official sponsor of the event.

Two Of The World's Best Bars In Athens
The World's 50 Best Bars recently announced this year's winners and once again, The Clumsies and Baba aur Rum are featured amongst the world's best bars.
The Clumsies, located on Praxitelous Street in central Athens, ranked 7th on the list. “With three floors that draw in the crowds all day, The Clumsies has it all – from coffee to homely-but-refined Greek food to leading-edge cocktails."
The Baba aur Rum, located on 6, Klitiou Street in downtown Athens, ranked 22 in the world. The judges highlighted, “Through warm Athenian hospitality and refined international cocktails, Baba Au Rum continues to be considered one of the best bars in the world.”
London’s “Dandelyan” and “American Bar” were named the World’s best, taking first and second place, followed by Singapore’s “Manhattan” bar in third.
