English Sayings and Idioms With Greek Origins
The majority of English sayings with Greek origins have emerged from Greek myths and stories. Here some widely used English sayings and phrases that have a decidedly Greek touch.
Achilles Heel
Between a rock and a hard place
Between a rock and a hard place, means having to choose between two evils. In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus had to pass between two sea monsters, Scylla and Charybdis, who dwelled on opposite sides of the strait of Messina. Odysseus chose to pass by Scylla, the lesser of the two evils, thinking he would lose fewer men, than passing through Charybdis, the whirlpool.
Knock On Wood
The habit of touching/knocking on wood, to avoid bad luck, or to bring good luck, goes back to ancient Greece, where it was believed that wood nymphs called dryads lived inside trees. The ancient Greeks would touch a tree, hoping to invoke good luck or protection from the wood nymphs dwelling within.
Simple Ways To Keep Athens Clean
Clean Your Neighborhood
If you are interested in removing unwanted graffiti and tags in your neighborhood, contact the City of Athens' synAthina by email at synathina@athens.gr or by phone at 210 3464738.

Tie Up Garbage Bags
Please tie up garbage bags before putting them into the dumpster; this way, the sidewalks, and streets won't get dirty during garbage collection. Note: When placing recyclables into the blue recycling dumpsters bags don't need to be tied up.
Organize your Recyclables
Please organize your recycling at home. Putting your recyclable materials in different bags makes the process at the collection and sorting recycling plants a whole lot easier.
Don't Move The Dustbins
Please don't move the dustbins; this makes the cleaning, and garbage collection process much easier and more effective.

The Greek Island Of Milos Voted The Best In Europe
4 great Greek islands made the list of the 15 best islands in Europe: Crete, Paros, Santorini, and Milos. Milos, is in fact, the grand winner as it was voted the best European island for 2019!
"One of the Cyclades, Milos is known as the place where the famed Venus de Milo statue was discovered. But visitors today still find their own treasures while exploring this 58-square-mile island. Stroll its cobblestoned streets, hike volcanic craters, wander through ruins, or stretch out on the groomed white-sand beaches overlooking turquoise waters. Even the largest town, Adamantas, which has two museums and a multitude of boutique hotels, remains largely free of the crowds prevalent on the other Greek isles. And, as one fan pointed out, “it’s very affordable.”
Other islands who made it to the list are Isle of Skye in Scotland, Ischia in Italy, Malta, and Madeira in Portugal.
