FokiaNou Art Space - indeX Exhibition

In a combination of installation and performance, artist Panajotis Daramaras and performer Sania Stribakou explore the dichotomy between mythical and scientific thought, using printed material as metaphor for the set of cultural and political elements that shape our cognitive activities. In pursuing the tension between myth, which denies temporality, and knowledge contained in the printed book, which rests on the idea of chronological sequence, the artists produce a decoding and critique of the concepts of knowledge.

Throughout the show’s duration, the artists Katerina Bella, Sania Strimbakou and Panajotis Daramaras will develop a dialogue with the works of the installation, resulting in a final performance on Saturday, December 22 at 20:00. Lighting Design for the entire show by Apostolos Stratzalis.

Panajotis Daramaras is a visual artist who lives and works in Athens. He studied at the Stavrakos Film School, attended Modern Dance and Conducting lessons, and later graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Athens. He has designed sets for films and theater, and has participated in many group art exhibitions. In 2013 he choreographed and interpreted the work "Traces" in collaboration with Aggeliki Papadatou.

Sania Stribaku is a dancer and dance teacher. A graduate of the State School of Orchestral Art, she continued her research in Paris and New York with a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation at the studios DanceSpaceCenter and Movement Research. She has danced with the Amalgamas, Yelpdanceco, Quasistellar, Ypsilon, Fingersix/Athens, among others, and worked with choreographers GosiaHaduch and the UnfinishedCompany, MarcelaGiesche, PereFaura, LilyKiara, Filolouvari, Giorgos Sideros Deligiannis and others. She has choreographed the piece “Passe-partout” in collaboration with Maria Mavridou, the Nota(c)tion project, and a piece which opened the University of Peloponnesos event "Taste and Memory".

FokiaNou Art Space is an artist-run project space in the intimacy of a small apartment in an old building in the center of Athens. The apartment has been transformed into an open space that encourages collaborative creative efforts between Greek and foreign artists, thereby promoting and supporting the local art community. The Museum of Cycladic Art, the Regional Services of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports (Ephorates of Antiquities of Chania, Rethymno, and Herakleion) and the Region of Crete are co-organizing the exhibition entitled “Crete. Emerging cities: Aptera ― Eleutherna ― Knossos. Three ancient cities revived” from 12 December 2018 to 30 April 2019. This is a multi-faceted exhibition with rich audio-visual aids, including screens, maps, and innovative technologies.

The exhibition focuses on three of Crete’s one-hundred cities, according to Homer (hekatompolis), and their common characteristics: their establishment, acme, decline, destruction, abandonment, and demise. Cities with centuries-long history, cities that were abandoned and forgotten, but are also tangible examples of archaeological investigation using similar or different approaches.

The exhibition comprises approximately 500 artefacts dating from the Neolithic (7th-6th millennium BC) to the Byzantine period (8th century AD), some newly discovered, others from old excavations, most of them never presented to the public before: statues, reliefs, figurines, inscriptions, vases, weapons, jewellery, coins, and other artefacts of various materials—limestone, marble, clay, metal (bronze, iron, silver, and gold), faience, glass, ivory, and semi-precious stones. This is the first time that so many artefacts leave the storerooms of the Antiquities Ephorates and display cases of the museums of Crete for a temporary exhibition in Athens.

A Christmas Carol / Charles Dickens

The magic of Christmas comes to the Greek National Theatre as the Marika Kotopouli Stage at the Rex Theatre extends a festive embrace to the whole family. Share in all the joy and excitement of Yuletide in a thrilling musical version of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol by the dynamic young director Giannis Moschos, who invites us into the world of dreams and the imagination, revealing the true meaning of Christmas!

Dickens’s most famous creation, Ebenezer Scrooge, is the most iconic miser in modern Western culture, and his trials and tribulations are brought to life on the stage of the Rex Theatre in a unique spectacle that will capture the hearts of young and old alike – especially those who are still able to see the world through the innocent eyes of a child.

Scrooge believes in discipline and hard work and disapproves of Christmas. But this year he has to re-evaluate his life and the people around him when forced to confront his past, present and future by three ghostly apparitions.  Will the hard-hearted Scrooge be moved by the holiday spirit? And if he is, then who can possibly resist it?

S.G. Art Gallery presents the solo exhibition of Qinghua Ioanna Lin "Human Excellence"

The emerging Chinese artist, Qinghua Ioanna Lin, creates portraits of celebrities of modern world culture who have managed to gain eternity through excellence. Among them are Maria Callas, Princess Diana, Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, Marilyn Monroe, Vincent van Gogh, Coco Chanel, David Bowie, Elizabeth Taylor, Shanmao, Zhan Guorong, Chenxiaoxu.

“I seldom drew portraits before, because at times it was difficult to face the eyes of others, as at times I find it difficult to face myself. The human eye can deliver all sorts of messages, and when it is sad, it gushes tears; when it rages, it resembles the black hole of the universe, devouring you. Man is a very complicated and advanced creature.
Human beings are the existence of senior life; portraiture, is the picture of the era”.

Qinghua Ioanna Lin
Professor Weihe Chen of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts mentions about Lin's work:
A Chinese artist who uses Chinese traditional painting material to create portraits of famous international artists and exhibites them in Athens, the place where western civilization was born.

Andy Warhol, who was the master of The Factory in New York could not imagine that a young Chinese artist used a traditional chinese method to restore his glorious appearance. Qinghua used pop art to depict his anxiety, nervousness and free spirit.

Portraits show people’s emotions and temperament. The portraits of famous people should depict the characteristics of their time and their portrayal of life feelings.
Quingua Ioanna Lin was born in Guangdong Province, South China. She lives and works between Greece and China. She studied Drawing and Art History at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. She holds a Master of Arts degree from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and was a Lecturer at Guangdong Baiyun University. Initially, her works focused on traditional Chinese painting, while she was involved with modern Chinese Calligraphy and contemporary painting with various traditional techniques like paper ink, watercolor, and modern techniques using a variety of materials.

The exhibition will be held unfer the auspices of the "Greece China Association".
