Athens Science Festival 2022

1 big celebration | 3 days of science, technology and innovation | top keynote speakers from around the world | live experiments | chemistry shows | interactive exhibits and activities | kids labs | workshops for adults

We are moving towards the future at an accelerated speed, but where are we really heading to? What challenges will we face and what do we expect to encounter? The Athens Science Festival 2022 (AFS), after three years, returns into its physical format, with the intention of taking us into the future – into the Worlds of Tomorrow!

From 21 to 23 October 2022, Technopolis City of Athens will welcome the leading scientific event of the capital, which since 2014 brings to the forefront the most modern developments in the field of science, technology, innovation and art.

The program of ASF 2022, inspired by Foresight, the strategic exploration of different possible versions of the future, connects us to “Tomorrow” and highlights how the scientific study of the past and present can both shape and shield the future.

In an ever-changing world, science consistently observes and provides the resources for development. Will artificial intelligence be the next step in education? Can climate change shape ecologically conscious generations? How is rapid technological development transforming art and science? Is rubbish the raw materials of the future?

Through talks by top keynote speakers from around the world, impressive live experiments, chemistry shows, interactive exhibits and activities, workshops for adults, children labs and many other events, the festival will attempt to answer the questions and raise new ones.

Keynote speakers:

This year, as every year, top keynote speakers will attend the festival to share their knowledge and expertise on a number of key issues that concern “Today” and will concern “Tomorrow”.

Among them, the Communication Officer of the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change and columnist for the digital magazine Climate Foresight Alessandra Mazzai will attend the festival with a talk on climate change, with the title "Climate: Are we prepared for change?"

Moreover, David Theo Goldberg, director of the Humanities Research Institute at the University of California, in his speech with the title, "Quantum thinking: How revolutionary is it?" focuses on the quantum thinking and whether it offers a new way of addressing our pressing social challenges.

We shall wait for you at this great celebration of science to discover together the Worlds of Tomorrow!

The Athens Science Festival is organized by the educational organization “Science Communication – SciCo”, the British Council and the Technopolis City of Athens with the invaluable contribution from a plethora of academics, research and educational institutions.

Hiking Mt. Parnitha

Just 40 minutes from Athens, the mountain air of Parnitha clears the mind and awakens the senses. We hike in the firs and pines on a passable route of well-maintained paths without steep slopes and inaccessible places.

During the hike in Parnitha we learn to "read" the traces of the animals and to understand their behavior in the forest as well as the flora of the forest with 1,100 recorded species of plants, it is considered equally fascinating.

We don't miss the opportunity to make stop in natural springs and places, where the view reaches eastern Attica and the southern Evian gulf. A hike that gives us unique images and experiences!
Our final stop is the Bafi Mountain Refuge at an altitude of 1,161 m. As part of our hiking trip we offer our hikers drinks, snacks and homemade pies.

For those who wish they can also enjoy a rich bean soup, village sausage, spaghetti with minced meat and many other homemade delicacies, enjoying the beautiful courtyard of the Refuge with the wonderful view to the peaks touching the clouds.

An architectural installation for kids 9-14 years old

The installation “Beginning with Basics. What is Architecture?” takes children and young people back to the imaginary beginnings of architecture in order to re-envision its future.

The notion of the Primitive Hut - “Urhütte” in German – runs as a concept through the history of modern architectural theory. It was used in order to refocus the discipline in moments of crisis and to remind architects of their humble beginnings. The aesthetic and technological immediacy of the Primitive Hut, real or imagined, served for example as a means to criticize architectural practices from ecological, social, and economical perspectives. Both powerful and simple in its imagery, this concept is very well understood and received by children. By learning about the parable-like theory of the Primitive Hut and by experiencing the construction of simple spaces with different techniques, children are equipped with first-hand knowledge of both the practical and the theoretical basics of architecture. At the same time, the work on the Hut promotes collaboration, critical testing, and environmental awareness of all kinds.

In the exhibition children will directly experience the story of the Hut: There is the grass of a riverbank to engage in knotting, weaving and the world of fabrics; there is a forest for visitors to explore the marvels of woodworking; and there is a cave to get immersed in all things stony, bricks and mortar. In the middle of the scenery, a veritable garden of architectural knowledge, there is a site where new huts are being planned according to scale and measurement, constructed and assembled collectively. Material science, spatial memory, social skills are all playfully exercised in order to once again set the architectural world in motion for the better future we all urgently need. Practice and theoretical questions happily merge when children are encouraged to rethink architecture in its simplest but ultimately most complex relationships.

Workshops for schools will take place every workday. On Saturday and Sunday workshops for kids and their parents will take place. The installation is on view for the general public, when no workshops take place, from 10 am to 6 pm every day except Saturdays.
