Dial 112 In Case Of Emergency In Greece & EU

112 is an integrated emergency communications service, which includes an inbound and an outbound component. In case of emergency, individuals can dial 112 for free from anywhere in Greece and the European Union.

The outbound component allows the reception of warnings via multiple technologies and communication channels in case of an imminent or occurring dangerous situation so that individuals can take the protective actions required to stay safe.

How To Use 112 In Case Of Emergency

Individuals in the EU need only to remember this emergency number to reach any emergency service. 112 is particularly useful for anyone who finds themselves in distress and needs emergency assistance while traveling within the EU.

The number is available in all EU member states alongside the domestic emergency numbers. However, some EU countries have opted for 112 as their single emergency number.

In Greece, 112 is available 24 hours a day, every day. By dialing 112, the caller can be connected to:

  • Police
  • Fire Brigade
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Coast Guard
  • the European Hotline for Missing Children 116000
  • the National Helpline for Children SOS 1056
The specially trained operators speak Greek, English, and French. Depending on the caller's emergency, the operator dispatches the call to the appropriate emergency service.

It is worth noting that 112 operators cannot provide traffic or weather reports, road assistance, or other general information.

Calls to 112 can be made from landline telephones, public payphones, and mobile phones (even without a SIM card) and are free of charge. 112 works inside the range of any cellular network.

Callers can also reach 112 through the following alternative channels:
  • Text message (SMS) or MMS to 112.
  • Email contact@112.gov.gr
  • Through the Gov.gr application.

When dialing 112, the emergency call taker will ask for the location of the emergency and questions to determine whether you need police, fire, medical, or other assistance. When reaching 112 by text message or email please make sure to include the following information on your message:

  • What is your emergency?
  • What is the location of the emergency?
  • Are there any casualties?

The public authority having jurisdiction for 112 in Greece is the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.

A medal awarded at the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896, recently sold at auction for $65,625.

The bronze medal was awarded to Georgios Tsitas, a Greco-Roman wrestling athlete who won second place at the Athens Olympic games in 1896. At the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, first-place winners received a silver medal, a certificate, and an olive branch, while runner ups won a bronze medal, a certificate, and a laurel branch.

The medals were designed by Jules-Clement Chaplain, a renowned French Art Nouveau sculptor, and feature a relief of Zeus holding Nike, the goddess of victory. On the other side, there is an elaborate representation of the Parthenon and the words “International Olympic Games in Athens, 1896,” in Greek.

Flux Laboratory Athens: Traces (At Benaki Museum)

Flux Laboratory Athens supports Persa Stamatopoulou’s Contemporary Dance Company and the new dance production titled "Traces".

The project is negotiating the mapping of the human imprint in space and time through a sound installation, drawing material from events of world history.

A collage of sound stimuli triggers the creation of bridges between the past and the present assembling a narrative of a world that seems to be progressing through its repetition.

Audio documents refer to moments that have defined our adulthood or have been recorded in us as narratives, redefining our relationship with memory.

Traces that are lost in the oblivion of History come back as short, standalone stories and give feedback to the acoustic installation along with kinetic action, thus complementing each other.

Through minimalistic and abstract aesthetics, two bodies scattered in space are in a continuous flow, searching and developing a dialogue with each other that allows them to interact and move along together, accompany their listening. The people present and absent, the audience and the protagonists, are setting the stage of their own story within History focusing on the echo that is left behind.

In the particular condition being build, the audience is called upon to activate first the sense of hearing, in an era when image as a medium occupies our perception of the world, the audience can bring back memories and compose their own personal images and thoughts.

Performances: 09 & 10.10.2020 at 19.00 and 20.30
Duration: 40 minutes

Tickets are available at the Museum’s ticket booths every Thursday and Sunday from 10.00 to 18.00 and Friday and Saturday from 10.00 to 22.00
Maximum number of spectators: 25 people.
All visitors are required to wear protective masks and maintain social distancing while on site.

FokiaNou Art Space: indeX 2

indeX 2”, an installation and performance with Panajotis Daramaras and Sania Stribakou

FokiaNou Art Space is pleased to present “indeX 2”, Panajotis Daramaras’ second part of an ongoing trilogy investigating the symbolic and scientific dimensions of matter. In indeX 2, Daramaras creates an independent universe of sculptural compositions and installations featuring wood and books, as well as a performance by Sania Stribakou. To paraphrase independent curator Ira Papadopoulou, “In indeX 2, not only does Daramaras narrate his own relationship to the unspeakable language of objects, but he also attempts to convey the inner sound of the body of matter itself, and to peel apart its surfaces and portray its primal history –a history existing prior to the palimpsest of records that have transformed matter forever.” The performances will take place on the roof of Fokianou art space. Motion design: Sania Stribakou, Conception: Panajotis Daramaras. Masks and social distancing are required in all areas of the space, including the roof, halls, and elevator.

Bad Weather Alert: Rare Cyclone Heading To Greece

A rare Mediterranean cyclone, named Ianos, will land in Greece today, and will initially impact the western parts of the country in the late afternoon, mainly the islands of Ithaca, Zakynthos, and Cephalonia as well as Ilia and Messinia in west Peloponnese, according to a statement issued by Deputy Civil Protection Minister, Nikos Hardalias.

On Friday, the cyclone is expected to hit the rest of the Peloponnese, Attica, Central Greece, and Evia. The Cyclades islands are expected to be affected by Friday night. Furthermore, it is also possible that Crete will also be impacted on Saturday.

Though his statement, Nikos Hardalias warned the public to be alert and take the necessary precautions. “We must be clear, the effects of Ianos will be similar to those of very bad weather, but with even greater intensity, extent, and duration. Material damage may be caused by strong winds and collisions with objects flying in the wind,” he said.

Did you know that hydration levels affect your energy, stress levels, and overall mood? Water is your body's principal chemical component, making up about 60 % of your total body weight. Our body depends on water to survive; in fact, every cell, tissue, and organ needs water to work correctly.

Water gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements; it regulates our temperature, lubricates joints, and protects sensitive tissues.

To reap all the benefits that water has to offer you, here are some tips to help you stay hydrated throughout the day, every day:

1. Keep a bottle on hand

Weave water into your daily routine; keep a large bottle of water with you when running errands or taking your kids to extracurricular activities. Try to make water and intuitive staple ibn your daily routine.

2. Add a dash of fresh lemon

Stay hydrated all day by dring a glass of water, followed by a warm lemon water glass. Try not to drink coffee before having at least one full glass of water.

3. Eat water-filled produce

Try to eat fresh produce with high water content such as watermelon and cucumber. Follow through with this habit during the winter months, and your hydration levels will go up, and your skin will look radiant and refreshed too!

4. Download an App

There are various hydration reminder apps out there, so choose what suits you best and start fueling your body with water. Push notifications are also handy when the day begins to get busy.

5. Make fruit-infused water

If water tastes too bland to encourage you to dring more often, try cutting up fruit and adding it to pitchers of water. Berries, pineapple, basil, lime, and ginger are perfectingredients to add a refreshing flavor to water.

How Much Water Do We Need To Drink Every Day?

Every day we lose water through breathing, sweating, urinating, and passing bowel movements. For our body to function correctly, we must replenish its water supply by consuming beverages and water-filled foods.

So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? According to experts, adequate daily fluid intake is:

  • About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men
  • About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women

These recommendations include fluids from water, other beverages, and food. About 20% of total fluid intake usually comes from food while the rest comes from drinks.
