Meeting With Mozart At The Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum and the Athens State Orchestra, within the context of the events «All of Greece, one Culture» of the Ministry of Culture & Sports, will present a concert with works by Mozart in the Acropolis Museum courtyard on Friday 28 August 2020, at 8:30 p.m.

Entrance to the concert is free, however, a seat reservation is mandatory here.

Program:
A Little Night Music, Serenade No. 13 in G Major, K 525, Symphony no. 40 in G minor, K.550

Conductor:
Phaedra Giannelou

Like every Friday, on Friday 28 August the Acropolis Museum exhibition areas will be open until 10 p.m. and the second-floor restaurant will be open until 12 midnight.
The Athens State Orchestra, under the baton of its artistic director, distinguished conductor Stefanos Tsialis, will celebrate 250 years since Beethoven’s birth, presenting two masterworks of the great German classical composer at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus as part of this year’s Athens and Epidaurus Festival.

The short but very dynamic overture of the ballet, The Creature of Prometheus (1801) with its ancient Greek themes, will open the evening program, vividly portraying the titular, mythical Titan as an agent of knowledge and enlightenment for the human race.

Symphony No. 7 (1812), an “apotheosis of dance” as aptly called by Wagner, expresses a triumphal affirmation of life, through ideal musical means, in a timeless, topical and universal manner.

In between the two Beethoven works, the flourishing, exceptionally talented pianist Alexia Mouza will perform Shostakovich’s electrifying Piano Concerto No. 1, in which a biting, often teasing modernist sensibility is masterfully combined with genuine, touching sentimentalism.

The historic race The Authentic Marathon Swim revives at Artemision 2,500 years later. The interest of swimmers from all over the world, to participate in the authentic marathon swimming route and other swimming activities, is gradually peaking, as the date of the great sporting event approaches, occurring on September 4-6, 2020, at Pefki, Evia, of the Municipality of Istiaia - Edipsos.

No matter where you live must have gone by a beautiful building and wondered about its history. Athens is a hub of neoclassical, eclectic, and modernist edifices from the inter- and post-war periods, standing among newer buildings like memories of a bygone era.

Since 2013, the MONUMENTA team, with the help of a group of volunteers and the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), has led a meticulous project that aims to protect Athens' architectural heritage, documenting more than 10,600 buildings that date between 1830 and 1940.

As a part of its project, MONUMENTA recently launched a smartphone application (for Android and Apple devices) to help users locate and learn about countless historic buildings on a digital map of Athens. So next time you come across an intriguing edifice in Athens, you'll finally be able to uncover its history!

Summer is the season children enjoy most because they have a lot of free time. So much so that they often spend several hours in front of a screen. I get lots of questions from concerned parents asking me how to handle this, how to set a schedule. After all the pressure children faced during the quarantine period parents are a bit confused. Should they push their kids or should they just let them free to do what they want?

So what do you do? I’d say “yes” to a flexible schedule. What does that mean? Make a relaxed daily program but do not push your children or yourself. No need to follow it to the letter, just have fun. We all need vacation; we all need to relax!

It’s an absolute must to “plan” free time without activities during the day. We leave time so that both kids and parents get bored. This way we will all get into the process of thinking about what we like, what we want to do, and actually get into doing what we want. Leaving our imagination free we can relax and at the same time get ideas, find solutions.

"But then my child won’t study at all during summer and he/she will forget everything" is a typical comment I often get. I’d say another big “yes” to reading extracurricular books that attract their interest and let their imagination run wild! But children need rest, just like adults do. Would you want to work during your vacation? And please do yourselves a favor and go back to the time when you were a child. Do you remember how you enjoyed spending your summer vacation? Let them play, run, bike, enjoy the sea, the mountains. This way they will “recharge their batteries” so they’ll be ready to go back to schooling and studying from September onwards.

Summer also offers an excellent opportunity to observe your child as a personality without time or school restraints. What is the activity or activities they choose to spend more time with? How does he/she behave when they are relaxed? How does he/she like to be treated? What are the areas they need your help with and what not? What do they like to do together with you?

Summer gives us a good opportunity to get to know our children better and to help them become independent and make their decisions on some of the issues that concern them.

Aeschylus' ancient Greek play "The Persians," is the first ancient Greek drama production to be live-streamed to a global audience. The performance will be presented in remembrance of the 25th centennial of the Battle of Salamis. "The Persians" dramatizes the naval battle of Salamis–one of the most critical battles in human history and is Aeschylus' most pacifist play.

The play will be streamed live on July 25 at 21.00 Athens time (GMT +2), in partnership with Google Greece, and will be available worldwide–except Greece–exclusively through YouTube. The screening is free of charge; however, donations are welcome. Proceeds and donations will go to the National Theatre and the Greek actors who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The play will be perfomed in Greek with English subtitles and will be available through livefromepidaurus.gr, the National Theatre of Greece, the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and the National Theatre of Greece's YouTube channel.
