On Friday, January 5th, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis proudly inaugurated the meticulously restored Royal Palace of Philip II in Aigai, with guidance from the esteemed Honorary Keeper of Greek Antiquities, Angeliki Kottaridis.

Central to this historic site is the palace itself, boasting an impressive expanse of approximately 15,000 sq. m. It stands as the largest building from classical Greece, a testament to opulence in materials, execution precision, technological innovation, and geometric purity. These elements collectively create an unparalleled sense of calmness, elegance, and harmony, where every detail submits to the allure of proportion.

Construction of this architectural marvel began in the mid-4th century, concluding in 336 BC when the grandeur of the palace witnessed the tragic assassination of Philip II in the nearby theater. Within the grand peristyle of the palace, Alexander III was proclaimed the king of the Macedonians, embarking on a transformative journey that would alter the course of history.

Unfortunately, the palace met its demise in the mid-2nd century BC, following the conclusive Roman overthrow led by Metellus in 148 BC. The remnants, concealed by centuries of stone-cutting, were unveiled through excavations commencing in 1865 and persisting into the 20th century, particularly during the 1930s and the 1950s and 1960s.

The peristyle of the Aigai Palace, distinguished by 16 doric columns on each side, represents an architectural marvel that epitomizes the concept of the square—a first of its kind. Encompassing 4,000 sq. m., it could accommodate a crowd of at least 8,000, serving as a communal gathering spot for Macedonians. This gathering place would later evolve into a symbolic courtyard, with the term "courtyard" becoming synonymous with royalty.

The monumental task of maintenance, repair, and restoration was executed by the capable Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia, under its diligent supervision. Spanning from 2007 to 2023, this co-financed project, supported by successive European programs, carried a total budget of 20.300.000 euros.

The project extended beyond the monument itself, encompassing an area of approximately 25,000 sq. m. Rediscovery, excavation, and meticulous documentation of the site's remains, along with the systematic recording of countless mobile finds and stone architectural elements, were integral to the restoration process. The aesthetic restoration of mosaics and marble inlays (covering around 1,400 sq. m.), foundation repairs, colonnade restoration, and the intricate work of supporting the monument's slope were all part of the monumental undertaking.

At the helm of this ambitious endeavor in all its phases was Dr. Angeliki Kottaridis, an esteemed archaeologist. The final phase received oversight from a team of experts, including Olympia Felekidou (civil engineer-restorer), Kiki Kyrittopoulou (architect), Eva Kontogoulidou (archaeologist), Costas Tzimboulas (antiquities conservator), and George Konstantinopoulos (craftsman).

This restoration stands as a testament to the dedication of those involved, breathing new life into a timeless piece of history for generations to come.

SNFCC: Α Tribute to Elvis Presley

On January 7, the curtain is drawn on this year’s SNFCC Christmas World with a vibrant event marking a hopeful attitude for the new year ahead. At the heart of the SNFCC, the Agora, the King of Rock & Roll comes to life for one night only, and everyone is invited to join in this open party.

No other pop culture persona has been as timelessly fascinating and as captivatingly charming as Elvis Presley — case in point: there are currently approximately 100,000 official impersonators of him in the US alone.

During his lifetime, Elvis stirred up teenage consciences, overturned social norms and shot down musical conventions. At the same time, he turned himself into a unique embodiment of the American Dream: he was innovative and, at the same time, inordinate in absolutely everything he did. And this is the reason why one generation of music lovers after another keeps on discovering his musical legacy with the same warmth and longing.

SNFCC’s tribute to Elvis Presley brings together musicians from the three most “thoroughbred” Athenian rock & roll bands, D.K. & The Band, Jitterbugs and HiRollers, in a delightful evening covering Elvis’s entire discography, from “That’s All Right” and “Mystery Train” to “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Blue Suede Shoes,” and from “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock” to “It’s Now Οr Never,” “A Little Less Conversation” and “Suspicious Minds.”

Archaeological Museum Enters Digital Age

Digital transformation, one of the most overused terms of the last few years, acquires special interest when it refers to cultural institutions. Even more so when the institution in question is the National Archaeological Museum (NAM), Greece’s largest, which for decades has been lagging behind in terms of its digital profile.

The Culture Ministry aspires to change this reality with a comprehensive program “to modernize and highlight the NAM” using 1.5 million euros in EU funding, which was presented on December 19.

Changes include a new secondary website, ds.namuseum.gr, where one will be able to book any museum activity and plan a visit. The museum will offer 32 new thematic guided tours, which will be available in rotation (nine available at a time). Visitors will also be able to do a virtual tour and select specific exhibits in a personal folder as memories of the visit.

Our museums serve as managers and curators of cultural heritage. Museum policies must change to serve social needs and not ultimately become museums themselves,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni. “With this specific project, NAM harmonizes its operation with the requirements of the era and the new generation. Also, foreign visitors, who will enjoy this renewed experience, will serve as the best ambassadors of our culture around the world.” Meanwhile, two information stations inform visitors about available themed tours, current and future activities, and allow visitors to send a digital postcard to a friend with one of the museum”s exhibits. In the center of the main hall, there is a new circular kiosk, created with the sponsorship of Aegean Airlines, that offers free audio tour devices to explain the museum’s permanent collections.

Next to the display case with gold masks of the Mycenaean tombs, there is now a series of three-digit codes that can be typed into the audio tour device to hear the relevant excerpt. “Stories about love and infidelity, war and peace, the first computers and tablets,” explains Anna-Vasiliki Karapanagiotou, general director of the museum.

These special podcasts, while still experiencing some technical problems that are expected to be overcome, are available in six languages and cover a total of 883 exhibits, while separate texts have been compiled for guided tours in sign language and for the visually impaired.

An additional service, which will be activated soon, is a mobile application for the museum’s most iconic exhibits, while nine digital information islands have been placed in as many rooms, enriching the thematic tours with videos as they are automatically coordinated with the visitors’ devices.

Regarding the planned expansion of the museum, Mendoni said that the agreement for the required studies will be ratified in Parliament within the first two months of 2024. The date of the ratification will affect the timeline for the completion of the project and the sections of the museum that will be closed.

Once upon a time Greeks decorated boats, instead of trees, with festive flair! While this tradition may not be as common nowadays, the memory of adorning sailboats for Christmas still floats on the seas of nostalgia.

Imagine the picturesque coastlines of Greece where communities would gather to decorate their sailboats and fishing boats into dazzling Christmas showpieces. Forget the tinsel and the tree—these folks were all about making a splash with twinkling lights, ornaments, and garlands that turned the seaside into a wonderful wonderland.

Of course, the choice of a sailboat wasn't random—it was a nod to Greece's maritime heritage. These boats weren't just vessels, they were floating symbols of adventure, exploration, and the salty spirit of the sea. The tradition paid tribute to the sailors and seafarers who had charted the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean waters.

In some coastal areas, there's a spirited effort to revive the sailboat tradition as it's not just about decorating a humble sailboat into a festive fiesta; it's about reviving joy, community, and a charm that made the tradition so special for so many generations.

Concerts featuring favorite artists and bands like Tonis Sfinos, Panos Vlachos, Polkar, Nefeli Fasouli, Wedding Singers, Jerome Kaluta, and Mihalis Kalkanis Group, along with festive tunes in the city center and neighborhoods, as well as unexpected parties in unique venues curated by genre experts, have set the rhythm of Christmas throughout Athens!

The Wholesome Goodness Of Greek Cuisine

When it comes to embracing a healthy lifestyle, one cannot overlook the culinary delights of Greece. Renowned for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and ancient culture, Greece also boasts a culinary tradition that goes beyond mere taste—it's a celebration of health and well-being. But what makes Greek food one of the most nutritious and wholesome cuisines in the world?

The Mediterranean Diet: A Symphony of Flavors & Nutrients

Greek cuisine owes much of its healthful reputation to the Mediterranean diet, a nutritional powerhouse celebrated for its benefits. Loaded with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and heart-healthy olive oil, this diet forms the backbone of Greek gastronomy. The careful balance of these elements not only tantalizes the taste buds but also promotes overall well-being.

Farm-to-Table Philosophy: Fresh & Locally Sourced Ingredients

One of the secrets behind the healthfulness of Greek food lies in its reliance on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From succulent olives and juicy tomatoes to crisp greens and aromatic herbs, Greek dishes are a testament to the use of seasonal, homegrown produce. This commitment to quality not only enhances flavor but also ensures a higher concentration of essential nutrients.

Omega-3 Rich Seafood: Nourishing the Heart with the Bounty of the Sea

Greek cuisine, with its extensive coastline, incorporates a generous amount of seafood. Fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, takes center stage, contributing to heart health and overall vitality. From grilled octopus to classic Greek salads with anchovies, the Greek culinary repertoire harnesses the goodness of the sea for a wholesome dining experience.

The Power of Herbs & Spices: Medicinal Properties of Greek Herbs

Greek cuisine relies heavily on a myriad of herbs and spices, each with its own set of health benefits. Oregano, rosemary, thyme, and sage not only add depth to dishes but also bring antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to the table. These natural flavor enhancers not only elevate taste but also contribute to the holistic well-being of those savoring Greek meals.

Health and pleasure need not be mutually exclusive. The marriage of fresh, quality ingredients, time-honored recipes, and a culture that values the joy of eating creates a culinary experience that not only delights the taste buds but also nurtures the body. So, the next time you savor the goodness of Greek food, know that you're not just eating a meal – you're indulging in a celebration of health and vitality. Opa!
