Every June, the week-long SNFestival invites us to travel back to our favorite summers, guided by music, dance and melodies, stories and laughter, exercise and play, and live yet another unforgettable beginning of summer!

The Summer Nostos Festival (SNFestival) is an international multifaceted arts, sports and education festival. Admission is free for all, and the festival is addressed to visitors of all age groups and interests, aspiring to become a friendly creative platform where people can get together, express themselves and exchange ideas.

The SNFestival finds an ideal venue in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), activating multiple spaces in the SNFCC, both indoors and outdoors, and reaffirming the SNFCC’s mission to offer a dynamic, open public space that is accessible to all. In this way, the SNF returns, once a year, to the “home” it created for all people.
The SNFestival is organized and made possible through the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

The open events of the 2019 SNFestival will take place from June 23rd to June 30th, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), with free admission to all. As every year, on June 23rd, on the occasion of World Olympic Day, the evening race SNF RUN: Running into the Future will be held.

Athens Zero Waste Festival

The Athens Zero Waste Festival organized by Plastikourgeio Shop & Lab and Impact Hub Athens will run this year during two-days at the Kypseli Municipal Market.

Inspired and influenced by the zero waste philosophy proffered by Bea Johnson and the experience achieved by Plastikourgeio Shop & Lab, Athens Zero Waste Festival invites the general public to discover that the zero waste movement can be a moral, economic, effective and visionary goal. It guides us to change our way of life and everyday habits to imitate viable natural circles where all rejected materials are recovered to become resources for others.

The event aims at sensitizing participants on the importance of reducing waste at the source, promoting the exchange of ideas, the emergence of new opportunities and encouraging the transition to a more sustainable lifestyle.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT MAINLY REPLY TO THE NEEDS OF OUR CITY ENVIRONMENT

• The reduction at source of raw materials and / or recyclables.
• The attainment of zero-waste.
• The reduction of food waste.
• Repair, repackaging or reusing used products.
• Improving behaviors (citizens, businesses, institutions, etc.)

The festival will feature product stalls, info stands and organizations that will inform visitors about their actions, workshops for adults and children, talks/debates and documentaries/videos.

We want to offer a holistic approach to the issue and show that zero waste is a movement and a way of life that concerns all of us. Adopting Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and Rot, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in creative workshops, buy zero waste products, listen to speeches and get to know important actions in our city and country that are actively engaged in: waste disposal, material repurposing, reuse, local decentralized waste management, water pollution (8/6 is International Ocean Day), fast fashion, recycling or repairing appliances, permaculture, but also disposal and handling such as energy, water and food.

In the context of Zero Waste Production, please bring with you: reusable items such as glass / bottle, container.

Talented Greek tennis star, Stefanos Tsitsipas is on his way to the 3rd round at Roland Garros for the first time. Tsitsipas won against Bolivian Hugo Dellien, in a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 7-5 match that lasted over two hours and 49 minutes.

Tsitsipas admitted, "I started thinking what went wrong in the first set. That [bathroom] break helped me. So I went inside mentally prepared to fight more, and I was aware of the situation I was at. Once I got myself into the right mindset, things seemed to flow my way. And from there, winning the [second] set 6-0 was good confidence boost for me. Obviously, after that, he didn't want to give up. He fought as much as he could. But I seemed to prevail at the end."

In the next round, the Greek tennis player is scheduled to face Filip Krajinovic of Serbia and everyone in Greece will be cheering him on!

Good luck, Stefanos!

Renowned coaches from the NBA, NCAA, Euroleague, and the Greek league shared their expertise in the top athletic workshop. “Better our game, better one another!”

On May 4-5, 2019, ACS Athens attracted more than 150 coaches from around the world (Greece, Lebanon, Kuwait, Israel, Switzerland, Egypt, Finland, Ukraine) as it welcomed four elite coaches from the NBA, NCAA, Euroleague, and Greek League level, in order to share their knowledge and expertise with other basketball enthusiasts at the 10th International Basketball Coaches Clinic.

Four experienced coaches, David Blatt (head coach of Olympiacos BC), Rob Fodor (shooting coach of the Miami Heat), Beth O’Boyle (women’s head coach of Virginia Commonwealth University) and Argyris Pedoulakis (head coach of Peristeri BC) contributed to a top-notch basketball clinic, presenting interesting topics and covering broad areas in basketball coaching techniques. Beth O’Boyle shared her knowledge on the principles of the pack-line defense system and building a 4-out-of-1 in motion offense. Argyris Pedoulakis gave an interesting presentation on offensive spacing. Rob Fodor demonstrated techniques on shooting and balance, while David Blatt had an open discussion on the principles of building a successful coaching career.

ACS Athens is dedicated to promoting professional development, expanding its network across the globe through creative projects and events and bringing together leaders in their fields, forming powerful synergies. With the same approach, ACS Athens organized and hosted this major athletic and educational event, inviting prominent basketball coaches to share their knowledge with an enthusiastic audience of fellow coaches.

The two-day workshop inspired, educated and brought together a large community of coaches, leaving all participants in anticipation of the next event!

The experience was equally fulfilling not only for the participants but also for the distinguished presenters. Coach Beth O’Boyle noted: “Being a part of the 10th anniversary of the International Basketball Clinic at ACS was truly an honor. ACS Athens provides a unique experience for passionate coaches from all over the world to learn and grow their knowledge of the game.” Coach Rob Fodor was impressed by how keen the participants were: “ACS Athens and its Director of Athletics, Annie Constantinides, put on a fantastic event! The passion and enthusiasm by all those attending was a pleasure to experience; all the coaches were so well received! Great life experience for me, I hope to be back to Athens soon, and I will enjoy all my new friends and colleagues for years to come.”

The goal of the International Basketball Coaches Clinic is to inspire and help new coaches improve. As Coach Argyris Pedoulakis commented, “I thank ACS Athens for this invitation. It was a wonderful experience participating in the seminar as a speaker in a great environment. I hope we helped and inspired young coaches to become better!” Coach David Blatt also expressed his positive impression of the event, full of basketball and exchange of knowledge: “Always a pleasure to share ideas and knowledge with other coaches. In this way, we better our game and better one another.”

Our summer will be cinema! This is the program of the 9th Athens Open Air Film Festival The beloved cinephile summer date, the Athens Open Air Film Festival, co-organised with the City of Athens Cultural, Sport and Youth Organisation (OPANDA), returns for its 9th year with magical screenings from June to August.

Special parts of the city, archaeological sites, parks, squares, beaches and some of the most beautiful museums of Athens transform into open air cinemas with free entry to the public. The highly anticipated cinema celebration in and around Athens is an alternative and disarmingly beautiful way to watch films while simultaneously experiencing the city in a way you never imagined. A summer night’s outing lit up by the magic of cinema.

This year, especially, the screenings of the 9th Athens Open Air Film Festival aim to revive the grand experience of re-watching classics and other cherished films on the big screen, in extraordinary settings. Finally, following last year’s momentous and popular first screening in an ancient theatre (having screened “Electra” by M. Cacoyannis at the Ancient Epidaurus Little Theatre) the Ancient Epidaurus Little Theatre will open its doors for a second film screening, this time for the showing of “Vertigo”, the best film of all time as stated by Sight & Sound and CINEMA magazine.
