Vlassis Restaurant

The balance of rustic and refined notes at Vlassis reminds me of the fetching equilibrium Vassilenas achieves. The understated décor is also vaguely contemporary, and Vlassis has a similarly lulling effect. Although it is in a busy part of Athens, it is protected behind a wall of shrubbery that gives it a cloistered feel. On the night we went, there were more than a dozen small plates to choose from, and slightly fewer entrees. Most of the starters, which the Greeks call mezedes, are brought to the table on an enormous tray for visual inspection. There was a divine, lemony stuffed cabbage with béchamel; a kind of chopped fried zucchini, not breaded, that had the opulent feel of sautéed mushrooms; a pool of luscious sheep’s milk yogurt with a tomato sauce like a thin, fiery ketchup in the center; and something our served called “spicy cheese,” which was like a creamy feta flecked with hot cooked green peppers, and was out of this world.

We gorged so happily on these mezedes that we couldn’t summon much enthusiasm for our entrees, which warranted at least a bit of it. A simply grilled red snapper had tender flesh; baked chicken fulfilled its prosaic obligations.

Come dessert Vlassis looked beyond the national borders, serving us a panna cotta reminiscent of Italy and a cheesecake evocative of nowhere and everywhere. I could excuse the digression. It was the last act of our final meal, and we’d had our contented fill of Greece.

Vlassis, Maiandrou 15, Athens; (30-210) 7256335. Dinner for two, with wine, is 85 euros.

Welcome to Pandeli Restaurant in Kifissia

Pandelis Tsobanoglou, an intelligent and working Greek of Minor Asia, fascinated with tastes and flavours, was meant to be identified with the finest of oriental cuisine. In 1901 he opened his fist cook shop in the Fishmarket of Istanbul. The small shop bubbles over by the exuberant personality of Pandelis. Eating at becomes a favour for everyone very soon. Governors and men of letters, politicians, journalists and artists are huddled into his next tiny restaurant. Ataturk used to have lunch there whenever he was in town and in 1933 Prime Minister of Greece El. Venizelos honoured their friendship by giving Pandelis his golden cigarette-case. became very famous all over the world and was visited as well as by Kings. Pandelis clinked glasses a great number of times with famous or gourmet people, but mostly with friends. ”My friends and the pleasure I offer them mean the whole world to me” he used to say.

In 1955 the restaurant moves to its present place, next the entrance of Spice Market overlooking Galata Bridge, the Goldenhorn and Bosphorus. The old chef is hereafter supported by his son Christos Tsobanoglou who has undertaken the overall responsibility since 1967.

Pandeli’s cuisine constitutes the highlight of the local gastronomy for the 20th century and its ingenuity acquires universal appreciation.
In 2003 Christos Tsobanoglou and his children Paris and Sofia have opened the restaurant in Athens at Kefalari Kifisia and have brought the quality in oriental cuisine as well in Greece.
Nobody has over doubted that at restaurants one will taste the best choice of the food market, cooked the unique way- the Pandeli’s way by using the best and freshest ingredients.

Pandeli was recently (2004) been awarded from the Chaine de Rotisseurs of Greece. Also, The most of the foreign tourist guides mention restaurant as the number one choice (e.g. the French “Les Guides bleus”).

Daphne’s Restaurant in Plaka

Daphne’s has been a hallmark of fine dining in Plaka for almost 10 years, and a reference point for visiting dignitaries, corporate chiefs, and socialites-from Hillary Clinton and Betsy Bloomingdale to Meryl Streep and Luciano Benetton. Situated in a beautifully-renovated old Plaka townhouse, the main dining room is covered with Pompei-style murals. The menu is classic but sophisticated Greek.

Appetizers include an astonishingly tender grilled calamari and lamb skewered on toothpicks with light yogurt and mint sauce, with main courses of unusual regional and seasonal fare, such as pork or veal braised with quince or wild greens or eggplant, depending on the season.

In the summer there’s al fresco in the inner courtyard. The service is excellent and the owners charming.

The Grocery

The Grocery on central Skoufa street in Kolonaki opened in 2014 and is designed by architects Andreas Kourkoulas and Maria Kokkinou, in a style which combines industrial with nostalgic elements, reminiscent of an old fashioned grocery. The art deco tiles give the space a unique character.

The cuisine is Greek, with some ethnic dishes and is based on quality local ingredients, such as aromatic herbs, greens, cheese from small producers which give the dishes a simple, essential taste, keeping to tradition.  The Grocery is open all day with coffees, juices and breakfast in the morning, is a popular spot for lunch, and in the evening hours the highlights include original cocktails, selected local wine, ouzo, distillates, and beers.

With great luck we found ourselves somewhere in picturesque Mikrolimano. Right by the water with tables and comfortable maritime armchairs almost touching the sea, Delfino offers a unique opportunity for all who search for good-tasting and high-quality food. The atmosphere is exclusive and the location with its strong marine elements competes favourably with the famous background of "Delfino" with the picturesque and distinctly beautiful Portofinoon the Italian Riviera. With collector's furniture and paintings decorating the dining room and an exceptionally aesthetic bar where you can enjoy classic cocktails with soft music; we offer you a totally pleasurable experience.

Delfino Restaurant is located in the town of Piraeus, south-east of Athens. To Kouti Restaurant - Monastiraki

A nice and lovely restaurant in a neat style and with a comfortable and cheerful ambiance. One of the better places to eat in this area and well visited. It has a nice terrace and a lively atmosphere due to use of bright colours. The interior is comfortable. Paintings on the wall give the final decorative touch. That a fine kitchen doesn't necessarily have to be fancy is a point well proven by the Greek cuisine here. The menu is comprised of mainly original dishes.

You'll taste that the bread here is homemade! Vegetarians also have enough to choose from. Very pleasant is the fact that the waiters are kind.

Trattoria Da Nonna

We tasted it, we loved it and we present it to you: Trattoria Da Nonna! A tasty temptation, of Italian origin, hidden in the narrow streets of Halandri! A place made like traditional Italian restaurants, ready to entertain and serve each one of you. The owner, Christos Xanthopoulos, gets all his raw materials from Italy through a special supplier which supplies all the genuine trattorias of Athens, to maintain the authenticity of the recipes of the Italian cuisine! The menu at Da Nonna trattoria consists of traditional Italian recipes, has curated an Italian chef and good friend of the owner, who aims to keep high levels of quality and proper execution of recipes.

For this reason, he brought from Italy a special pizzagiolo (person who makes pizza), to teach the rest of the team how to make a proper Italian pizza.

Enjoy!
