3 Bars In Athens Among The Top 50 In The World

Line, Baba Au Rum, and The Clumsies are among the 50 best bars in the world. The World's 50 Best Bars awards were announced recently, with Paradiso in Barcelona being on top of the list. It’s the first time since 2009 that a bar outside New York or London wins first place.

About The 2022 Awards

It is worth mentioning that the No.1 on the list for two consecutive years, the London Connaught Bar, was in 8th place. Just like last year, London's Tayēr + Elementary took second place.

Three bars from Barcelona were in the top 10 of this year's list of the 50 best bars in the world. A total of four bars from Spain made the top 50, while Italy also managed a strong showing, with four Italian bars making the list. The list is the result of the votes of 650 bartenders and bar owners, taste journalists, and cocktail experts.

My Week in Athens… May 10

I had the pleasure of hosting 2 business colleagues for a ‘non-business’ couple of days in Athens. These colleagues are both successful professionals, in their 40’s, well-travelled - one Polish, one Turkish. We were quite a sight…

We started Saturday with a slow breakfast at HipCafe at Syntagma (yes, they have pancakes), then wandered around the centre, ventured through Plaka, up the Akropolis and stopped in Thissio for a late lunch. Later, Monastiraki, Ermou, Syntagma and Kolonaki. The evening began with dinner, and ended with a couple drinks around Plateia Karitsi…

I know what you’re thinking – yeah, so what? We do that all the time.

Well, that’s my point. I know it’s ‘more of the same’ for some of us, something we’ve done over and over and ad nauseum. But let’s not take it for granted – we can’t be that jaded...

My colleagues were amazed, to say the least. They kept commenting on the ‘energy’, the ‘life’ of the city centre. Yes, history and ancient culture and western civilization – this amazed them too. But what they didn’t expect in this city of crisis was the relentless and unapologetic buzz of the people. My Polish friend commented that, after 2 days in the city, he is ‘officially optimistic’ about the future of Greece. “Just let them go! Remove the barriers to entrepreneurship, and watch this place go!” he said. Interesting…

We had a wonderful weekend; I was feeling pumped and positive about the possibilities that lay ahead of us… By Monday morning, I was back to square one (I gather most of us were…) – not sure what to think, and a bit unsure about what lay ahead…

They say hope dies last. For now, I’m still hopeful…

Until next week,

Jack

In this weekly space, keep up with ‘Jack’ as he navigates daily life in Athens… Anecdotes, stories, hits & misses, the good, the bad and, well, the rest…

Modest Restaurant

Great news! Nikos Boukis, who has been doing an outstanding job at the award-winning "Selini" in Santorini, has recently acquired Athenian culinary headquarters at the new ‘Modest’ restaurant.

The menu is based on modern Greek cuisine, some tastes including a salad called Underground with roots, bulbs and mushroom powder for 'soil', a tiganopsomo with kippers and lentil hummus, a chickpea soup with seafood and pork neck with braised mousse dolmadaki. The menu items are attention-worthy and you’ll be even more impressed at the good prices.

Metsovo is a lovely mountainous village that enthralls visitors with its breathtaking colors and distinctive sceneries.

It is situated at an altitude of 1200 meters, in a lush green area, right where the North and South Pindos meet.

Despite the area's rapid growth in tourism, it retains its traditional identity. It beautifully blends the past with the present, making it a great shelter not just in the winter, when you'll likely see it covered in snow, but throughout the year.

The birthplace of some of the most prominent National Benefactors, Metsovo is renowned for its high cultural development. There you will be able to appreciate museums, stone mansions, monasteries, traditional founts, and cobblestone roads. In addition, you will stroll around the central square, surrounded by restaurants and charming cafes.

The Benefits Of Beets

Beetroots, whether roasted, steamed or raw, easily find their way into new salads, side dishes and main dishes. They are friendly with Mediterranean seasonings of all kinds: Greek, Middle Eastern, North African, Italian and Provencal. The greens are interchangeable with other mild-tasting greens like Swiss chard and spinach; one bunch of beets gives you two vegetables to work with.

With the beets and their greens you get two sets of nutrients: anthocyanins and betalains, known for their antioxidant properties, from the beetroots, and vitamins K and A, as well as other phytonutrients – lutein and zeaxanthin – from the greens. Both are excellent sources of folate, and beets are a very good source of manganese, potassium and copper.

I find that I often need greens from two bunches to have enough for a recipe, which is one reason I’m always looking for new dishes for beetroots. This week, I made three vegan salads, one with beets and their greens drizzled with a garlicky tahini dressing that I’ve always loved with typical Middle Eastern dishes like deep-fried cauliflower and falafels.

A Greek Start-Up Goes Global

In the spring of 2012, 35-year-old Imperial College graduate Nikos Moraitakis was an Upstream executive in Dubai, far away from the noise of crisis-stricken Greece, but when a new round of elections was announced back home in May that year – a situation which would lead the country to the brink of Grexit – he decided to return and set up his own company together with fellow Upstream executive Spyros Magiatis. Perhaps as a response to those who felt his decision was “crazy,” Moraitakis had already created “The Drachma Start-up,” a blog with a telling subtitle: “Diary of an Entrepreneur with Incredibly Bad Timing.”

Three years later, their company, Workable, which develops software to facilitate the hiring process for companies, is reaffirming its reputation as the country’s most promising start-up firm. Recently, the company announced it was set to receive the largest amount of funding ever given to a local start-up – 27 million dollars. The financing comes from core investor Balderton Capital as well as Notion Capital and 83North (formerly Greylock IL, the venture capital firm which headed a previous round of funding).

Workable currently employs 48 people, compared to 30 at the beginning of the year, while its turnover has risen fivefold in the space of 12 months.

Meanwhile, the company’s client base is increasing by 15 percent every month and, according to Moraitakis, the target is for revenues to quadruple by the end of 2016.

More than 3,000 companies in 52 countries use the company’s software, which, according to Daniel Howden, Workable’s vice president for marketing, “democratizes hirings” by allowing small to medium-sized companies lacking specialized human resources departments to compete with larger firms in the headhunting process.

The company operates primarily in Athens – with a staff of 36 – as well as London and Boston – now the company’s headquarters. “We hope to continue with the majority of employees working in Greece, as we plan to increase our staff to 150 people within the next year,” CEO Moraitakis told Kathimerini. Most of the members of the Greek team, “who are earning salaries that are considerably higher than the market average,” belong to one of the age categories worst hit by the crisis, 25- to 35-year-old graduates, said Moraitakis. Now the fresh funding will go toward the company’s growth plans.

Registrations are open for Santorini Experience 2016!

Privileged accommodation packages during the days of the event!

The exquisite event 'Santorini Experience' is ready to welcome the lovers of swimming and running on October 7-9, 2016!

On Saturday, October 8th, 2016, runners of all abilities will have the opportunity to run at the exceptional routes of 5km (running and dynamic walking), 10 km and 15 km (total positive altitude: 834 m.) overlooking the unique images of the volcano, the Caldera and the sites Imerovigli, Firostefani and Oia. The routes have been designed and edited this year by the former marathon runner, holder of national best performance on the classical route, running coach and director of All About Running, Nikos Polias. The starting time of the 10 km and 15 km routes is common at 08:15 am (with a limit of 150 participants per route), while the starting time of the 5km route will take place at 11:00 (with a limit of 200 participants). All routes start from the desalination plant in Oia with an initial direction towards Fira and athletes return back at 2.5 km, 5 km and 7.5 km points respectively, to finish their running at the same point where they started.

Runners will discover the magical trail that connects Oia with Fira overlooking the Caldera of Santorini (Thira), which took its name from Thira, the first Spartan colonist of the island. A detailed description of the routes including maps and technical details (altitude) is available in the following link: http://santorini-experience.com/event_routes_16_en.html It must also be noted that with the suggestion of the technical director of running, three vertical running routes will be prepared this year to enrich the weekend schedule of the event.

Ancient Santorini (Thira) was an earthly paradise, destroyed in 1,500 BC, along with a multitude of nearby coasts, dragging brilliant samples of the Aegean civilization. Its description fits perfectly with what Plato was saying for the mythical land of the Atlases that was completely destroyed, leaving no trace behind. The Atlantis.

So over the sunken Atlantis participants in the sport of swimming will have the opportunity to swim in the unique swimming route of 1.5 mile (2.4 km) of “Santorini Experience”, on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 10:00 am, from the volcano to the old port in Fira.

The route has been designed by the Federal Technical Coach of Swimming, with Olympic and World distinctions in open water swimming and Technical Director of the event in swimming, Nikos Gemelos. The event will also be held under the auspices of the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE), something that happens for the first time in open water swimming, at a sports tourism event, marking the explosive participation expected from swimmers and swimming clubs from all over Greece and abroad.

Those interested can now make their registration in swimming or running through the official page of the event in the following link: http://activemedia.com.gr/product/santorini-experience-2/

For those wishing to combine sports with tourism and take advantage of their stay in one of the two or three most beautiful islands in the world, if not the most beautiful, privileged packages starting from 300 euro for 2 people for 3 days - 2 nights (including transportation, accommodation, food and participation in the event) will be available. For more information you may contact the hospitality sponsors of the event: Santorini Hoteliers Association, Meltemi Hotels & Resorts, Athina Luxury Suites, Central Fira Hotel, Sienna Residencies, Memories Hotel and Loizos Stylish Residencies which are available in the following link: http://santorini-experience.com/event_accommodation_en.html. The page will be daily enriched with new supporters and in the upcoming days discounts on transportation to Santorini will be announced.

This year's event will have an unprecedented international promotion, as FOX Sports of FOX Networks Group, will carry forward as the Official Broadcaster of “Santorini Experience” its sports documentary, to millions of homes in Europe, Asia and Africa, creating a unique television product.

'Santorini Experience' is collaboration between the Municipality of Santorini, the Municipal Sports Cultural Environmental Organization of Santorini (D.A.P.P.O.S.) and Active Media Group.

There are professions that we thought were lost for long and totally replaced by industry. How many times did you have the chance to meet a saddler, a basket weaver, a sandal maker or a luthier? However, they survive away from the spotlight, because there are still people dedicated to craftsmanship either because they “inherited” it from their ancestors or because they have discovered it and developed it themselves.

Cultural worker and artist curator Laura Bernhardt and photographer Benjamin Tafel have created a project called from-hand-to-hand where they search, they document and they present to us still active craft workshops in Greece and the stories of their protagonists. According to their mission statement “the project examines their situation, their emotional relationship with their profession and their prospects. The result is a series of portraits that show the artisan in relation to his or her profession and the current situation of upheaval”. Here, Greek TV interviews Laura and Benjamin in order to learn what motivated them to initiate this project.

How did from-hand-to-hand start? What gave you the idea to begin?

Benjamin: The initial idea for this project was driven by our personal relationship to Greece. Both of us have been closely linked to Greece since our childhood. Over the last few years we have observed that craft workshops seem to be gradually disappearing. With this project we wanted to draw attention to something that is only sparsely visible.

Laura: And, also the ongoing economic crisis, the negative news about Greece have moved Benjamin and I to take a different perspective. We wanted to focus on the makers. Together we wanted to search for traces of still active craft workshops in Greece. Through dialogues with the craftspeople we wanted to examine their situation and their emotional relationship to their profession, their prospects and desires.

Promising Greek Startups

Last April Equifund drastically changed the picture of the Greek start-up ecosystem after announcing that almost €500 million will be poured into new businesses in the next five years.

This amount of money may seem small in comparison to funding in other countries, but for Greek standards it is an enormous step, especially, given the circumstances in Greece during the past few years.

A couple of months ago, Found.ation, a leading technology and innovation enabling platform in SE Europe, partnered with EIT Digital, a leading European digital innovation and entrepreneurial education organization, and Velocity. Partners VC to release the 'Start-ups in Greece' report for the 2nd consecutive year.

The report is mainly focused on the 10 most funded start-ups in Greece – some of them already well known in the international start-up community – such as Softomotive, Workable, and Viva Wallet. The report also includes start-ups that still haven’t gained popularity but have the potential to become the next ‘game changers’ of the local start-up scene!

The Acropolis of Athens, one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world, will soon be offering the much-needed improved disabled access.

The central archaeological council (KAS) of Greece has recently approved the installation of a new elevator to provide easier access to disabled visitors. Furthermore, the council has also approved the upgrade of existing lighting for the site and its landmarks.

In terms of lighting, the KAS decision refers back to a 2003 study carried out by renowned French lighting designer Pierre Bideau. The planning will be carried out by Bideau’s collaborator Costas Kapos of the Doxiadis Bureau.
