The first day of the festival, on Monday 27th May, is dedicated to contemporary Greek jazz scene. Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival is bringing out the local jazz trends, supporting the Greek jazz bands and presenting some of the most innovative and creative Greek jazz groups. So, we welcome Yako Trio-Festival’s Pick- who will present music based on the work of the musician Yannis Konstantinidis. They will be followed by the experimental sounds of Grey Paris, who are this year’s festival suggestion, whereas some time later Petros Klampanis Trio will bring the air of the American metropolis in Athens.
On Tuesday 28th May, we expect the special group of Wajdi Riahi (Tunisia), the M. Messios Symmetry Band (Cyprus) and Gaspar Karoly Trio feat. Krisztina Pocsai (Hungary), while on Wednesday 29th May the central stage of Technopolis is taken by Clara Peya & Vic Moliner (Spain), Richard Koch Quartett (Germany) and the highly-anticipated New York-based composer, drummer, academic and activist Jaimeo Brown (USA), who will present his project “Transcedence with Chris Sholar and Jaleel Shaw.

On the next day-and-night- Friday 31st May we are travelling with the jazz sound of the Things I Can’t Control (Netherlands), Alfa Collective (Estonia) and Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet (Poland).
When the weekend arrives, our mood is high and we can’t wait to enjoy the Helge Lien Trio (Norway) and the Dainius Pulauskas Group (Lithuania). They will be joined by the beloved Mammal Hands (UK) who will present their enchanting and rhythmic minimal melodies on the jazziest stage of the city on Saturday 1st June.
The last day of the festival, Sunday 2nd June, belongs to Ondrej Havelka and his Melody Makers (Czech Republic), Ernie Hammes (Luxembourg) and Girls in Airports (Denmark) who mark the ending of this fascinating jazz experience.
A jazzy Meet Market, special exhibitions as well a plethora of other side events accompany the biggest Jazz Festival in the country. This year as well, METAPolis are presenting two original photo exhibitions based on the city surrounding us. Athens Festival - Angelica Liddel And Nora Chipaumire
Two unconventionally artistic women will perform at Peireos 260 on the 30th of May, each with their own unique show.
Angelica Liddell returns to the Athens Festival five years after her last performance "All the Sky Above the Earth". In Genesis 6, 6-7, Liddell blends poetry and theatre, weaving together the myth of Medea with the Old Testament.
The title refers to the first book of the Old Testament and more specifically in that moment when God regrets creating humankind and decides to destroy all life on the planet.
In #PUNK, first part of a music trilogy, the choreographer Nora Chipaumire, draws inspiration from her years in Zimbabwe during the 1970s and 1980s.
The word ‘punk’ refers to the music of that period, but also to an uncompromising, anti-commercial way of living, built on the principles of self-reliance and do-it-yourself.
Through her one-of-a-kind visual landscapes and soundscapes, she tackles concepts such as self-depiction, biography, emancipation, independence, adopting a distinctly punk take on the concept of ‘future’: there is no future; the future is already embedded in the present.
Schedule:
- Angelica Liddell: Genesis 6, 6-7 (May 30-31 at 21:00)
- Nora Chipaumire: #PUNK (May 30-June 1 at 23:00)

Oedipus Rex - Sophocles
The plot:
After Oedipus was born, his father, King Laius of Thebes, learned from an oracle that he, Laius, was doomed to perish by the hand of his own son, and so ordered his wife Jocasta to kill the infant. But faith decided differently.
Oedipus Rex is long considered the greatest Greek tragedy and hailed by Aristotle as the tragedy par excellence. It remains a model of what tragedy should be; deftly plotted and perfectly executed, it has a sympathetic protagonist, a crushing climax, inspirational poetry, and a wealth of meaningful themes. The play remains on the very short list of exceptionally and undeniably great world literature masterpieces that are taught all over the world.
About Fimonoi:
“Fimonoi Stage” is a professional theatrical group, with the vision to inspire visitors and spread the message of Classic Greek culture and Ancient Drama to tourists from all over the world. Fimonoi’s vision is for foreigners visiting our country to have the complete cultural experience, watching theater, poetry and music performances, adding up to the overall travel experience, and get to know the role of Athens and Greece in the global cultural life.
From May 30 to September 26, 2019
Every Thursday at 20:30
Women Of Passion, Women Of Greece
Three mythical female figures, Medea, Maria Callas and Melina Mercuri, travel among a crowd of passengers by a train of the 50’s.
Medea, the tragic figure of ancient Greek drama, blinded by her deep love for her husband, murdered her own children.
Maria Callas, the internationally celebrated opera diva, devoted her life to music and let her fate be sealed by a “fatal” romance.
Μelina Mercouri, one of the most beloved greek actresses, singer, and politician, who starred in the most well-known international films, fought for culture and democracy.
The departure station of this journey is ancient Greece while contemporary Greece is its destination. The tragic ancient drama heroine Medea, meets the two great priestesses of modern Greece, Maria and Melina. A common feature unites their different paths, and that is passion. Passion for life, passion for love, passion for creation, passion for freedom. History, culture, the power of the human soul, the struggles for democracy come alive by an actress and a musician, who accompany us to this fascinating journey of creative memory, humor and emotion where Greece is at the same time the starting point and final destination, with the feelings of people all over the world as stopovers.
Shows:
Every Saturday at 19:00 hrs (as of June 1, 2019
The shows may be followed by dinner in the Wagon Restaurant or at the open-air Bar & Restaurant “Apovathra” (dishes from 5€ / glass of wine 3,5€ / spirits 6€)
