The New And Cool In Athens

A mini-guide to the city's latest openings, from upmarket hotels to restaurants and cafes!

New Hotel Ancient Views - Electra Metropolis Athens

In the hands of interior designer – architect Maria Katsarou-Vafiadis, of the London-based MKV firm, a 1960s office building, formerly home to the Ministry of Education, has been transformed into a stylish five-star hotel, oozing Athenian retro-chic coolness. Highlights start right from the entrance canopy, where you will see the refurbished post-Byzantine Church of Aghia Dynami, to the impressive lobby atrium, featuring a gigantic artwork by famous Greek artist Alekos Fassianos, all the way up to the roof garden and pool, which offers the most breathtaking 360-degree view to enjoy while sipping a cocktail or dining. Check out the cute ground-level bistro as well, where remnants of the ancient city can be seen through glass floors, proving that, wherever you dig in Athens, there is always something ancient to be found.

Drupes & Drips - Takis Bakery

Fans of Takis Bakery near the Acropolis just got a whole new range of options, with a new Italian espresseria and a juice bar. Pick up a freshly made fruit juice, or choose a “pedigree” coffee prepared by expert baristas. At lunchtime, the small space becomes a cicchetteria, so you can try hams and cheeses from abroad or from small-scale Greek producers. There are no tables, so sit at the bar and have a glass of wine, spritz, prosecco or potent Greek tsikoudia with your nibbles.

Exotic Green Parrots In Athens

A short walk through the National Garden, in the heart of Athens, is enough to convince anyone that a whole colony of exotic green parrots has found refuge in the capital.

The presence of the impressive, and slightly “noisy” parrots is very intense all around Athens’ parks, as they fly from tree to tree and make passers-by wonder how it is possible that exotic parrots – that we are used to seeing in documentaries for jungles and rainforests – live in the centre of Athens.

According to a research by the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS), more than 1,500 parrots live in Athens at the moment, and have conquered almost all the parks of the city and their surrounding areas. In fact, Athenians reported that they have witnessed the parrots in many places in Athens from Tritsi Park to Pedion of Areos, the park of Evelpidon and the Archaeological Museum in Patision Street, as well as the town of Glyfada and the residential neighbourhood of Goudi.

The HOS reported that the green parrots in Athens are a species that normally lives in the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range in Asia or in tropical forests south of the Sahara desert in Africa.

According to experts, just one pair of these parrots is enough to multiply into an entire colony of parrots on foreign soil, and increase their population very rapidly.

Start Your Day With A Smile

This year, one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to put more fun and play into my everyday life and to laugh more. “Why?” you may ask.

I like what happens with my paternal family. When we get together, my mum, dad, brother and myself, we laugh a lot. My mum especially has this charisma to laugh wholeheartedly out of anything. It can be a word, a name, a movement, something one of us has done in the past. We’re never short of good “excuses.” And they don’t even have to be funny. One of us will say something, the other will pick it up and boom, that’s it. In seconds we find ourselves laughing so hard that our eyes are filled with tears.

This is pure joy, pure laughter. Of course, we all have difficult issues we’re facing, situations that are not pleasant. But for a moment we share something very special. And after such a good laugh we all feel more lighthearted afterward. It’s as if our batteries are full again and we can continue with more strength.

That’s exactly the kind of laughter I want to re-introduce into my everyday life. We all have way too many worries to think about and things to take care of. But we don’t need to keep on taking everything, including ourselves, so seriously. Yes, we all make mistakes, and no, no one is perfect. That’s a fact and the sooner we accept it the happier we’ll be. The question is “can we laugh at our mistakes?” I don’t mean to be irresponsible and ignore them but I also don’t mean to worry about our mistakes for years and years to come. What I mean is can we accept them, accept ourselves, learn from our mistakes and move on?

I’m sure you’ve heard that when it comes to relieving stress, more giggles and guffaws are just what the doctor ordered. Can you imagine how your everyday life would be if, like children, you’d put more humor, play, and laughter in it? What if you’d make a conscious decision to take a break during the day and let go? To tell more jokes, play more with your children or your friends, not take everything personal?

Sounds good, doesn’t it? Well, that’s what I’ll do. And when I wake up in the morning I’ll take a good look in the mirror and start my day, every day, with a smile. I’d suggest you do the same.

September is here and with it comes the exciting start of a new school year. But after a long, carefree summer, getting back into the school routine can feel like a big change. How can you make sure your child is ready to tackle their first day with confidence and enthusiasm? By following these fun and practical tips, you can turn the back-to-school transition into an exciting and positive experience for the whole family!

Create an Awesome Study Zone

Help your child design a personalized study space where they can focus and feel comfortable. Let them pick out some fun accessories like colorful organizers, inspiring posters, or even a cool desk lamp. The more they help create the space, the more excited they’ll be to use it. It’s a simple but effective way to get them into the mindset for learning!

Set Goals—And Make Them Exciting!

Instead of just focusing on grades, sit down together and brainstorm some fun academic or personal goals for the school year. It could be learning a new skill, mastering a subject, or even joining a new club. Write them down on a goal board and celebrate progress throughout the year! Goals help keep kids motivated, but making them collaborative and celebratory will keep the excitement going long after school starts.

Go on a Back-to-School Shopping Adventure

Who doesn’t love shopping for fresh supplies? Turn the annual back-to-school shopping trip into an adventure by allowing your child to pick out items that reflect their style. Whether it's a new backpack, colorful notebooks, or personalized pencils, giving them some say in their supplies adds excitement and a sense of ownership over the upcoming year.

Create a Morning Routine Countdown

Getting out the door in time for school can be hectic. Make it easier by practicing your morning routine a few days before school starts. Turn it into a game by setting a timer and seeing how quickly they can get dressed, eat breakfast, and gather their supplies. Kids love a challenge, and this will help them learn how to manage their time in a fun way!

Highlight the Excitement of a New School Year

While school can feel like a big change, it’s also a time for new opportunities and experiences. Talk to your child about all the exciting things they can look forward to: making new friends, learning interesting topics, or joining after-school activities. By focusing on the positive aspects, you can help shift any nervousness into anticipation for the adventure ahead.

Kick Off the School Year with a Family Tradition

Celebrate the start of school with a fun family tradition that your child will look forward to every year. Whether it’s a special back-to-school dinner, an ice cream outing, or a movie night, creating a joyful event around the new school year helps them feel that it’s a special and exciting time. Traditions like this can turn the focus from nerves to excitement.

Returning to the Big City

Returning home after a fun time away is always bittersweet – I’m really glad to be back in my own bed, but somehow wish I was still on a beach somewhere…

Over the past week, I really noticed how ‘far away’ Athens feels from the rest of Greece. Of course, we often hear people outside the capital say they could never live in Athens, not with the crowds, the noise, the traffic, the chaos. And it seems the further away you get from the city, the more dramatic is this response. My answer has always been (usually spoken to myself), ‘sure, but Athens is like a quiet country town compared to Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Sydney...’

After hopping around Crete over the past days, I understand this more clearly. In places like Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, in the villages around Chania – Athens seems like a world away. And the pace of life in these small, ‘authentic’ Greek locales does make Athens seems like a chaotic metropolis. There are days in these rural zones where, I’m sure, not much happens. And where not much has changed in generations.

I suppose the truth is that everything is relative – relative to where you’ve just come from and relative to where your life’s experience has decided is the ‘comparison’.

The same goes for Greece’s beaches. Some of us have unwittingly become acclimatized to the beauty around us – so much so, that I have often found myself saying ‘oh look, those tourists think that (tiny, average) beach is wonderful – how unfortunate’. But really, relative to the colder, wetter, less ‘beachy’ places they’ve come from, those (tiny, average) beaches are a little piece of paradise for many people. And why shouldn’t they be!

So I am really trying to avoid this ‘relativity trap’ – the trap of thinking ‘gosh, Athens is so loud and busy’, after returning from an idyllic getaway - and instead remembering why I moved to this ‘energetic and alive’ city.

That, and also thinking about where I might go next time…

Until next week,

Jack

In this weekly space, keep up with ‘Jack’ as he navigates daily life in Athens… Anecdotes, stories, hits & misses, the good, the bad and, well, the rest…

To Kouti Restaurant - Monastiraki

A nice and lovely restaurant in a neat style and with a comfortable and cheerful ambiance. One of the better places to eat in this area and well visited. It has a nice terrace and a lively atmosphere due to use of bright colours. The interior is comfortable. Paintings on the wall give the final decorative touch. That a fine kitchen doesn't necessarily have to be fancy is a point well proven by the Greek cuisine here. The menu is comprised of mainly original dishes.

You'll taste that the bread here is homemade! Vegetarians also have enough to choose from. Very pleasant is the fact that the waiters are kind.
