Eggs In Ancient Greece

In ancient religions, eggs (but not necessarily hen’s eggs)  played an important role in the fertility rites held during the spring Equinox at the end of March. Eggs were used symbolically in the orgiastic worship rituals held in honor of Dionyssus, as well as in the rituals surrounding the worship of the ancient fertility goddess Kyveli. Many ancient tombs have been found containing the remains of eggs, symbolic of rebirth.

Hen’s eggs, however, were slow to enter the human diet, especially the Western diet. The chicken is the last addition to the poultry yards of ancient Greece and Rome, and there is considerable disagreement over the date of its arrival. Some sources point to the fifth century B.C., others go further back, arguing that chickens first appeared in Central Europe around 1500 B.C. and reached Greece some 400 years later. Homer doesn’t mention chickens.

When the hen’s egg finally did enter the larder of the ancient Greeks, it wasn’t very well esteemed. There are very few  mentions of recipes with hen’s eggs in ancient Greek texts, although there is ample mention of the delicate peacock’s egg, which was considered far superior.

Egg cookery really took off with the Romans. Eggs are mentioned frequently in the Ars Magirica, by the great Roman chef Apicius, who is said to have invented baked custard–milk, honey and eggs beaten and baked in an earthenware dish at low heat. Beaten eggs were used as a thickening agent to bind sauces and stews, and hardboiled eggs were an ingredient in many ancient Roman dishes.

Underwater Weddings Coming To Greek Island

Authorities at the Greek island of Alonnisos have made some innovative decisions in order to increase the tourism rate on the island in the coming summer season. The actions they have prepared focus on diving and hiking tourism, as well as on original events, such as underwater weddings.

Their main goal is to expand the touristic season on the island through alternative actions and proposals, which are inherent in the flora, the fauna and the natural beauty of the island and to highlight the regions advantages.

Alonissos’ touristic promotion program was created in cooperation with the tourism consultant of the municipality, MTC Group. The program will explore pioneering low-cost methods to attract tourists to the island.

A Unique Colony Of Seahorses In Greece

Have you heard of the secret herd of seahorses in Greece? Found in the small gulf of the Chalkidiki peninsula, a diver named Vasili Mentogiannis discovered the seahorses in 2007. Wanting the seahorses to survive, as the habitat was not favorable, Mentogiannis, along with scientists and other divers, began to create an artificial habitat in the area. They placed ropes and false plants to give the seahorses shelter.

It must have worked because in recent years, the seahorse population has had significant growth. In addition to building the artificial habitat, the divers have also tried keeping fishing boats off the area.

For now, only divers can enjoy the seahorses and as one diver Kostas says, "It's a unique phenomenon. The people who dive with us are always very excited after seeing the seahorses."

Navarino Challenge presented this year’s strategy with respect to the environment, aiming at leaving the smallest possible footprint and becoming the first sustainable sports event in Greece. The top multi-sport wellness event, nominated at World Travel Market’s prestigious International Travel & Tourism Awards, highlighted this year's activities and announced its ambassadors. Navarino Challenge will be held in Messinia and Costa Navarino for the 7th consecutive year, from 11-13 October 2019.

Pyatt, silver Olympic medalist in open water swimming Spyros Gianniotis and the Greek-American ultramarathon runner, Dean Karnazes, who is participating for the 7th consecutive year in the event as its ambassador in Greece and abroad.

Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Mr. Lefteris Avgenakis stated, through the director of his office Ms. Marianna Delkou: “I congratulate you on all your work that brings to light the natural beauty of our country, preserves the cultural heritage of Greece, cultivates environmental awareness and healthy nutrition by creating a valuable entirety of health and wellness based on the Olympic values of culture, the spirit and body, the pursuit of excellence and the admiration of beauty”.

On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Special Advisor Ms. Eleni Tzelepoglou stated: “Ministry of Tourism embraces the effort of Navarino Challenge, in the context of our strategy to develop the Greek tourism product through sports and improve its quality and sustainability. We congratulate everyone who contributed to this success and we are on the side of this event”.

US Ambassador to Greece Mr. Geoffrey R. Pyatt highlighted afterwards: “First of all, let me say what a pleasure it is to have my friend Dean Karnazes back here, someone who is a great ambassador for the U.S.-Greece relationship and especially our important diaspora. This event, the Navarino Challenge, has many connections to the United States, starting with its location at Costa Navarino, a Marriott Westin resort, which has been an innovator in finding ways to grow the Greek tourism season. I also want to say just a few words about my friend Dean. He is a world-renowned American athlete, who is also very proud of his Greek identity and family roots. And like his colleague Nick Galis, he’s somebody who has very much demonstrated the power of the Greek American diaspora to reinforce the bilateral relationship that I am here to build. Have not done the Navarino Challenge but I consider myself lucky over the past three years to have discovered a lot of the sports potential of this country. But I want to underline that we are hoping to see much more U.S. investment and involvement in the Greek tourism sector. Of course, Costa Navarino has been at the forefront in this effort to grow Greek tourism, to do so in a sustainable way that’s respectful of Greek culture and leverages all the fantastic aspects of this country. So I wish good luck to all the athletes and a successful competition again this year.”

Consequently, Active Media Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Akis Tsolis said: “Seeing all of our hard work being rewarded, through this year's entries and awards in Greece and abroad, we sought to move one step further in order to make Navarino Challenge, the first event of its kind in Greece that will highlight all the values of sustainability. As a part of this year's event we attempt to leave a positive impact by creating a sport event characterized by sustainability. Navarino Challenge is an innovative Greek brand that has become Global. It is, therefore, our obligation to change, evolve and become better by paving the way for sports tourism”.

The success of Navarino Challenge, which is established as one of the most important sports tourism events in our country, is a result of the convergence of all - private initiative, local and state bodies - demonstrating the important role this industry can play in tourism development and in attracting new audiences”.

Consequently, the ultramarathon Dean Karnazes highlighted: “Any of you that have been to Navarino Challenge and experienced it, I think that’s the best thing that I could say. It is really a magical event and I do events across the world. It’s world-class and innovative in every single way. Sports tourism is the future of Greece I believe. There is no place like Greece for running and it is the birthplace of running. In seven years of visiting Greece, I felt more enthusiasm than this year ever before”.

On behalf of the athletes, silver Olympic medalist in open water swimming, Spyros Gianniotis, remarked: “Navarino Challenge remains since its very beginning a beautiful event. The feeling you get from participating in it is unique, such as running in the sand of Voidokilia and swimming in Pylos, in an outstanding landscape. It is the best advertisement for our country”.

Some call them digital nomads. To others, they are corona refugees or lockdown migrants. In a time where remote-working is king, Athens has become one of the hottest tickets in Europe to ride out the epidemic and hit reset on life.

This is Athens asked some second wave “corona nomads” to tell us in their own words how Athens has given them the personal and professional lift they were craving and why life is so much sweeter in the Greek capital, even in lockdown.

A Fashionable Life On The Athens Riviera
Burak Cakmak, 46, Turkish
Global Fashion Executive for Kering (Gucci Group), Swarovski, Gap Inc.

I’d been living between London and New York when I came to stay with a Greek friend in Varkiza one summer. That’s how I discovered the Athens Riviera. I decided it would be a great spot to have a place along the Mediterranean coast. When I factored in the affordability, culture and hospitality I’d enjoyed in Athens, it struck me as a smart city to invest in. The minute travel started opening up again last June, Greece felt like the best place to be. I was able to return to finalise the purchase of an apartment right near the Varkiza esplanade, about half a block from Yabanaki beach.

London wasn’t doing very well with Covid, and with my tenure as Dean of Fashion at Parsons School of Design in New York officially finishing, there was no reason to be back in NY. I was building mini-businesses and already doing everything remotely so it made sense to stay and enjoy the extended summer here. I convinced my London business partner to come over too and she’s now renting nearby in Vouliagmeni. My life partner is originally from Crete so it’s wonderful to have a place together in Athens now. Over summer, the restrictions weren’t too tough and it was an exciting time. On weekends, the place was abuzz with Athenians coming down to enjoy the beaches and hardly any tourists.

I would wake up every day and put on my swimsuit. I wouldn’t even take a towel with me. I would just walk across the street, jump in the water for half an hour and then drip dry on my way back home, before starting work. It was perfect. To be able to do that in a big city is incredible to me. And when I want to feel the “real Athens” atmosphere, the city is just a 25-minute drive away. I was able to attend events like the Athens Democracy Forum in late September, and reach out to creative local fashion brands. Athens is a great city for being able to mix business and pleasure.

It’s unbelievable what you can do sitting in your own house around the world now. Currently I’m building a digital fashion education platform with two partners whom I’ve never met in person—both British nomads—one lives in Portugal, the other in Brussels. I’ve turned one of our bedrooms into my study and ordered new equipment for digital recordings. It’s easier to be in your own place rather than a co-working space or office. You have more control over your environment and don’t have to worry about masks.

The Athens Riviera is incredible because the weather is around 15-18 degrees in winter and most days it’s sunny. It’s not that crowded, so you can find peace within yourself.

The crazy thing is I never planned to be in Athens full-time. I just wanted to spend the summer here because everything everywhere else was shut down. But when I returned to London briefly, I soon realised that the lifestyle here was so much better during a pandemic. I don’t see any reason to leave now. Is lockdown better in Athens? One hundred percent.
