“Peculiar Views”, Dimitra Gounari solo exhibition
Opening:  Wednesday 14 September, 18.00
Duration:   14 September – 1 October, 2022
Hours:  Thursday – Saturday 17.00-20.00
FokiaNou Art Space, Fokianou 24, 7th Floor, Pagrati  Metro:  Evangelismos

In her solo exhibition at FokiaNou Art Space, Dimitra Gounari presents a series of new photographic landscapes embodying multi-layered perspectives through her use of mirrors. By using mirrors she invites viewers into the artist's world and makes them feel part of her experience. The body and the landscape are presented in multiple deconstructions in a confusion of reflections in order to highlight a new multi-layered interpretation of reality, where the different parts recreate our relationships with the 'other' and the natural landscape. Dimitra Gounari states: "Mirrors, which complete the landscape, act to break down our fixed perceptions of our world, while at the same time they offer new dynamics for a new repositioning of human coexistence with the natural landscape. The mirror represents fragility and the exploration of 'self' which is always a starting point for me."

Dimitra Gounari is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sound and Image of the Ionian University, holds a Master of Arts in Image and Communication from Goldsmiths College-University London U.K., with a scholarship from the I.K.Y. State Scholarship Foundation, and is a graduate of the Department of Photography of the TEI of Athens. She has taught at the Department of Photography and Audiovisual Arts of the University of West Attica, the Visual Arts course at the IB Diploma of Geitona Schools and is an IB DP Visual Arts examiner. Her work has received distinctions and awards from institutions and photography competitions such as the Ministry of Culture of the French Community of Belgium, the Melina Merkouri Foundation 2001, the Euro Press Photo Awards 2001, Fotografos magazine in 2002. She has exhibited in Greece, Belgium, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and been published in catalogs in the Greek and international press. Her work can be found in private and public collections such as the Museum of Photography of Thessaloniki and the Photographic Center of Athens.

FokiaNou Art Space is an artist-run project space in the intimacy of a small apartment in an old building in the center of Athens. The space encourages collaborative creative efforts between Greek and foreign artists, thereby promoting and supporting the local art community. Since 2016, under the direction and curatorship of visual artists Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris, over 50 exhibitions have been held, as well as workshops and talks.   www.fokianou247.gr

Art Athina, an institution that closely follows developments in the field of visual arts, this year, in addition to the basic themes that make up its program, has included new categories that broaden the spectrum of its interests, but also take into account the changes that technology is bringing to the field of visual arts.

In this context, Art Athina presents for the first time an exhibition of works that are exclusively NFT that have never been shown at any other event, while the Art Athina Pavilions section combines the world of contemporary art with that of architecture. In addition, this year, in collaboration with MOMus-Museum Alex Mylona, the Art Athina Prize will be awarded to a new artist.

This year's Art Athina is the first to take place in its established form after the pandemic, but it has not broken ties with the art-interested public in the past two years, despite the difficult conditions imposed by Covid-19. In 2020 it took place digitally through an Internet platform, and in 2021 a hybrid solution was adopted, combining the digital exhibition with the presentation of "compressed" (QR codes) artworks in a physical space in the lobby of the King George Hotel in Syntagma Square.

Phoenix Athens Mosaiko: Beautiful Rebels

William Barnhart presents us with a new body of work that was created during his residency and first visit to Athens in August and September 2022. The work has been crafted from William’s detailed observations and sketches of Athens and is further informed by a desire to connect vitally with the city of Athens and its citizens.

A lifelong career artist, Barnhart’s paintings are marked by a heightened sensitivity and reverence to human gesture and expression; however, one can’t help but sense that the figures in his paintings are both trapped by and affecting the space they inhabit. This gives us a hint into Barnhart’s philosophy about painting as a form and a practice that is inextricably connected to understanding others and one’s environment. A close look at both the imagic scope and sheer volume of works displayed in MOSAIKO, reveals that narrative is just as important in each painting as it is in the overall arc of this collection. From scenes of the fish market on Athinas Street to the star-crossed  lovers and misanthropes at the cafés and bistros of Exarchia, we are taken on a journey through  William’s impressions of Athens and his growing love for this diverse and exciting city.

For Barnhart who has also been classically trained in painting, color is an important focal point. The cool violet and azure shadows of the Southwest and the glorious glow of gold and orange light one finds in Arizona and California are repeated in these paintings. As an artist that was born and raised in Indiana, he also knows the works of the Ashcan school and understands how light is used sparingly to describe the urban environment. He has carefully analyzed colour, figuration and composition as  it was used by the [San Francisco] Bay Area Figurative School (Wayne Thibeaud and Richard  Diebenkorn).

Biographical notes:
William Barnhart (b. 1959) is an American painter from Mesa Arizona who completed a BFA in  Painting from Brigham Young University, followed by post-graduate studies in painting at Arizona  State University. He has created public sculptures throughout the region of Phoenix, Arizona and has  created a 400 m2 studio where he is also currently developing a residency space for international  artists.

Opening: Sept. 23rd, 7-11 pm
Dates:
Sept. 23rd - Oct. 11th
Gallery Hours: Monday-Friday 12-6 PM. Saturdays by appointment
