Staying Alive With Katerina Vrana

Performed in English for the first time ever!

In April 2017, Katerina Vrana, one of Greece’s top stand-up comedians, was on tour in Malaysia. On the third city of the tour, she fell severely ill and was hospitalised. The situation ended up being far more serious than first suspected, and she was put into a coma in order to save her life. *spoiler alert* Katerina survived!

After two months in the hospital in Malaysia, she returned to Greece, where she was hospitalized for a further three months. Since September 2017, Katerina has been recovering slowly but steadily. She still faces issues with her mobility, balance, eyesight and speech

All of this is used as material in her stand-up comedy show “Staying Alive (I nearly died, you know)”.  With her unique sense of humor, the beloved stand-up comedian manages to transform her near-death experience into to a show full of optimism, laughter and love for life.

The show was first performed in Greek, in Athens, in 2019 where it sold out all of its dates before even opening.

Katerina Vrana performs stand-up comedy in both Greek and English all over the world. Her shows have sold out in Athens, London and at the Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne comedy festivals. CNN has included her in its list of “Female Comedians you must see”. In December 2016 she came third in Laugh Factory’s international competition “Funniest Person in the World” which was aimed at countries which do not have a tradition in stand-up comedy. In April 2017, while on tour in Malaysia, she fell seriously ill and nearly died. Her show "Staying Alive (I Nearly Died, You Know)" in 2019, about her illness and recovery, sold out before it even started its run.  It remains the fastest-selling, most successful solo stand-up comedy show in Greece to this day.  In 2021-22 she starred as Florence Foster Jenkins in Peter Quilter’s theatre play “Glorious”, garnering rave reviews.
Katerina spends most of her time between shows and rehabilitation as she still faces issues with her movement, eyesight and speech.
FokiaNou Art Space is pleased to present a solo show of photographic works by Susan Daboll, an American artist living in Greece since 1999. Daboll explores the notion of sensuality, not only that of human sexuality but also in visually seductive motifs in the physical environment. The show consists of three groups of images:  fireworks, bodies, and landscapes, where evidence of the erotic can be found.  Her point of view, personal and slightly mysterious, transforms the ordinary into something else.

Susan Daboll is a visual artist who lives and works in Paros, Greece and NYC. After receiving a BFA in printmaking and photography at Syracuse University, she moved to New York City, where she graduated from the International Center for Photography/New York University Master’s program. For more than a decade, she taught photography at NYU. Daboll has had work in many exhibitions including the Brooklyn Museum, University Art Museum in Boulder Colorado and the Monmouth Museum. Earlier this year she spent February at an artist’s residency in Italy, and most recently, her work was featured in the 25th Anniversary exhibition at the Holland Tunnel Gallery in Newburgh, NY, and Paros the Lovely at the Holland Tunnel Gallery in Paros. Her work is in many collections including the Arkansas Art Center, Brooklyn Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Chicago Art Institute, AT&T and Pfizer.

FokiaNou Art Space is an artist-run project space in the intimacy of a small apartment in an old building in the center of Athens. The space encourages collaborative creative efforts between Greek and foreign artists, thereby promoting and supporting the local art community. Since 2016, under the direction and curatorship of visual artists Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris, over 50 exhibitions have been held, as well as workshops and talks.   www.fokianou247.gr

Las Vegas Magic Festival

The world is full of magical things patiently waiting for us to discover them.

At the end of the 19th century, the art of magic as a form of entertainment became famous all over the world. The one and only Houdini and other famous magicians of the time laid the groundwork to create the type of entertainment called a Magic Show. It became so popular that it managed to earn a place on Broadway and Las Vegas shows in no time.

The Magic Show maintained its popularity well into the television era, with magicians such as David Copperfield and David Blaine successfully modernizing the art of magic.
And the story continues to this day. All these years Las Vegas continues to attract the best magicians from around the world.

For three years now, the Christmas Theater has hosted the Las Vegas Magic Festival, a show that presents every year famous award-winning magicians, with impressive performances that are sold out. It's time for another unique experience. Las Vegas Magic Festival 4!

Christmas Factory 2022

The Christmas Factory at Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens opens its gates on Saturday, November 26th!

Santa Claus has decided to reveal all his secrets that lead to joy this year! And this is done with 7 + 1 special workshops - from a ghostly maze to creative confectionery activities, Face Painting and choreography by the elves; a dancefloor for young and old, a more giant ice rink, the band of elves, and much more.

You can't have Christmas without food! That's why The Christmas Factory has everything: souvlaki, burger, pasta, pizza, hot dog, chocolate, treats, hot wine, food, and drinks for all appetites and moods! And because Christmas also means gifts for loved ones, the bountiful market has all the decorations, toys, and inspirational gifts you can imagine. And at the centre of this fairy-tale, magical happy "village" is the even taller and even more tufted Christmas tree.

This year, The Christmas Factory includes in its extensive program the theatrical performance "Elafontain, the Aesop in another way" directed and conceived by Giorgos Suleiman, text by Sofia Kapsouros, and original music by Themis Karamouratidis. An excellent occasion for children to get to know the myths of Aesop through the eyes of the French poet and mythmaker Jean de La Fontaine. A performance - an ode to cooperation.

Xmas 2022 @ Fougaro ArtCenter

FOUGARO ARTCENTER, rounding the circle of 10 years of creative life, is the place to be this year for the festive season in Nafplion!

With the first decorations already up, the ARTCENTER is poised to welcome young and old with a program, not only full of art and Christmas activities, but games and workshops, fairy tales and DAY CAMP, our festive menu, and lots of music.

We are marking our 10th anniversary by celebrating the art and magic of light.

From Sunday December 11, FOUGARO ARTCENTER will be hosting the spectacular light installation, Light CAN, across its outdoor spaces.

The installation is the work of the Beforelight group, the creators of numerous art shows in Greece now working in Nafplion, at our commission, for the first time. Inspired by the ARTCENTER’s former life as a canning factory, the installation visually experiments around the idea of the can.

CAFÈBISTROT will, as always, be putting on its best, lifting spirits with a special menu for the entire festive season, one in which local ingredients and festive character dominate.

As is the case every year, music will play a key role. On Saturday, December 17, the outstanding Blues performers, Jolly Jumper & Big Moe, will stage what promises to be an unmissable LIVE concert! And after that local bands with a festive program will be giving live performances at the FOUGARO ARTCENTER too.

Tectonics Athens ’22

Ever incisive, subversive, and surprising, the Tectonics Festival is back in Athens for the fourth year.

With new music at its core – everything from classical orchestral music to improvised solo performances, taking in electronic music, new instruments, music installations, and much more along the way – Tectonics is returning to Athens. Onassis Stegi is partnering with the Athens Conservatoire to present yet another packed and audacious program of live music events.

Touching on everything from symphonic music to noise, and from free improvisation to contemporary composition, Tectonics uncovers new affinities between differing music styles. Acclaimed conductor Ilan Volkov, who launched the event with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, in the country where the tectonic plates of Asia, Europe, and North America all meet, joins forces with Michalis Moschoutis and Anne Hilde Neset to create yet another unforgettable festival for the Athens music scene.
