I would like to congratulate the organizers who for over a decade have worked to highlight the Navarino Challenge as an event of international appeal”.

The Secretary General of Sports, Mr. George Mavrotas, stated: “The development of sports in our country is a matter of public interest for four main reasons: (a) the promotion of citizens’ health, (b) the cultivation of values, especially for the younger generations, (c) the country’s international image, (d) economic development. All four reasons are combined in the Navarino Challenge, highlighting the very rich potential our country has in 2 sports tourism and making it one of our country’s ‘flagships’ in this field. I want to express my congratulations for the continuously increasing appeal and success of the Navarino Challenge for over 10 years. Good luck with this year’s event”.

We look forward to many activities this year in the Municipality of Pylos-Nestor”.

The Chief Executive Officer of ActiveMedia Group, Mr. Akis Tsolis, mentioned among other things in his presentation: “In 2019, we were talking about well-being, while today the new trend or more correctly the big challenge is longevity, how we will live longer and better. With the global message ‘sports unites people’ we look forward to seeing you at Costa Navarino and Pylos for the 12th Navarino Challenge with the most activities ever held”.

Gastronomy & Sports Tourism at the Center

The Managing Director of Miele, Mr. Thanos Kyriazis, said: “Miele Hellas, as a platinum sponsor this year, supports for the 3rd consecutive year the top 3 Wellness and Sports Tourism event in Europe. A truly unique event whose values align with those of Miele. Integrity, trust, respect, excellence, and reliability are the fundamental values that guide us daily, which align with those of the Navarino Challenge and are also present in our CSR pillars. We participate for the third consecutive year in Navarino Challenge with our entire community. We will be alongside top athletes such as Antigoni Ntrismpioti, Pavlos Kagialis, Ioannis Orfanos, Dimitris Papanikolaou, and we will further develop our collaborations with the Athens University of Economics and Business, Humanity Greece, and of course, Thanasis Hountras, with a series of announcements and actions to follow in the coming weeks”.

The inspirer of Humanity Greece, Ms. Georgia Paraschou, stated: “Through Navarino Challenge, common values that connect Sports and Volunteering are promoted, giving the opportunity to young people to actively contribute to the three-day event and to highlight important groups of Civil Society. Once again, ‘Sharing is Caring’ will support 12 non-profit organizations, which perform significant social, humanitarian, environmental, and animal welfare work. This initiative is one of the most important auctions held in Greece and aims to provide substantial support to organizations and volunteer groups”.

Finally, the safe driving instructor, Mr. Thanasis Hountras, mentioned: “I would like to sincerely thank the MOTODYNAMICS Group for their trust and overall cooperation. The Group adopted the theoretical Road Safety program ‘Drive Change. Move Safe’, which during the academic year of 2023-2024 trained more than 1,000 young people. Our goal now, through Navarino Challenge, is to train the young people of Messinia”.

My Week in Athens… Jul 19

This week was one of the hottest I have experienced in my life. Outside of trekking around southeast Asia or the Caribbean, I have never sweat more ‘at home’, anywhere…! I must admit I stayed indoors most of the week – even a trip to the beach was beyond me…

What does a person do to cope with heat? Well, if you’re like ‘some’ people that I know, you head for the nearest climate-controlled building facility – The Mall.

And what’s more, it’s a bonus when the need for climate-control corresponds to the start of Summer Sales. Yes, the sale season started this week – and judging by the numbers of cold-seeking shoppers at The Mall, retailers must have been quite happy. On the flipside, it seemed that day that most of the rest of Athens also had the same idea – The Mall was jam-packed!

With prices at 10-20-30-40% off (and more!), it’s a good time to pick-up some deals on everything your life is missing…

And if The Mall proves too crowded, an evening at an open-air cinema is a great way to wind down and enjoy(?) the heat…

Until next week…

Jack

In this weekly space, keep up with ‘Jack’ as he navigates daily life in Athens… Anecdotes, stories, hits & misses, the good, the bad and, well, the rest…

Cookisto.com: Homemade Food Delivery Service

Fabulous food like Smyrna-style meatballs, delectable sweets, and fresh sushi are cooked daily in homes and transported in plastic containers from neighborhood to neighborhood. Behind all this lies Cookisto.com. The founders Michalis Godas and Petros Pitsilis talk about their idea that has become a huge success in Athens.

What is Cookisto?

It's an online community that allows you to find tasty, homemade food wherever you are or enter your own homemade creations. For the more advanced, it is like the eBay of eating.

How did you get the idea?

When you're literally hungry, you become inventive. The idea was born when we realized how easy it is for someone who cooks for himself or his family, to increase the number of portions and share them with other people. The occasion for its implementation was Michalis' thesis. Panagiotis Paradellis undertook the technical part, and soon John Asimakopoulos (Community Manager) and Demosthenes Nikoudis (programmer) joined the team. The crisis was a positive factor for the success of Cookisto, since now people are looking for new innovative alternatives even in food!

Who is your target?

Cooks (people who cook at home) and foodies (people who love homemade food). A cook can be anyone loves cooking, is passionate and wants to share their passion. Do celebrity chefs also cook for us? Sure! In Cookisto.com you will find cooks from talented housewives to professional chefs. From stuffed gemista to sushi! The truth is that the gemista are currently ranked higher in popularity so far ...

Give us some reasons for us to become members as well.

Only in Cookisto can you find delicious, healthy meals from talented cooks at cost prices! Finally people who love to cook are given the opportunity to show off their talent through our community.

How can we verify if the Mrs. Maria from Kipseli has not put parathion in the spinach or simply does not respect the basic rules of hygiene?

Such ventures are feasible because technology now allows us to trust strangers. This is the power that Cookisto utilises as do other similar platforms, such as Ebay and Airbnb. Now you can stay in the home of a stranger for a night, rent the car of your neighbor, choose someone to help with your small daily chores and the list goes on ... So by connecting your Cookisto accounts to other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, it adds an extra level of trust towards you. Of course, the main role reflection of trust can be found in the reviews and ratings of other users that are also a strong indicator of future quality of the service of the chefs.

Do you make any profits?

Currently, we do not. Our priority is to create an active community and for people to love our application. In the future, each user will be able to buy cookisto credits, use them for transactions, and we will retain a very small commission.

How do you imagine Cookisto after 10 years?

It is difficult to plan ahead for 10 years... However, we have dreams and aspirations. We have now started with Athens as our focus. In the future we plan to expand to other Mediterranean countries, as we believe that both the cultural significance around homemade food and the economic crisis are favorable factors.

How have people reacted in this short amount of time you've been online?

Results so far have exceeded our expectations. After one month of effective functioning, we have 240 cooks and more than 1,700 foodies and already through our platform have delivered almost 400 servings!

Greek Fish And Seafood

If you take a look at a map of Greece you will see why fish is such an important part of the Greek diet. For such a small country there is a lot of coastline which is why they have such a strong history of seafaring.

Eating seafood goes along with that. Unfortunately the sea which was once so abundant is now barren in places through over-fishing and the Aegean sea simply can't keep up with the demand of a seafood-loving population whose numbers swell during the tourist season. Fish can be very expensive, though there are inexpensive fish available year-round, and these are just as tasty as the expensive ones.

Lets start at the bottom and make our way up the fish chain. The cheapest fish are sardeles (sardines), gavros (anchovies), kolios (mackerel), gopa (bogue) and marides (smelt). Also in this inexpensive category are kalamari (squid), though the frozen variety which is usually, if not always, imported from California, China and other far away places. When kalamari is in season they will tell you on the menu that it is fresh. When cut and fried it is usually frozen but fresh kalamari is grilled or fried whole. In the kalamari family is also thrapsala which to you and I looks like a squid and tastes like a squid but is not a squid. Well maybe it is a squid but they call it thrapsala and like fresh kalamari they serve it grilled or fried whole. In the same family are soupia (cuttlefish) which have shorter tentacles and are never fried but cooked in a stew with tomato sauce. Octopus, which is eaten in small amounts as a meze (snack) can be local or can come from China or the Atlantic. Octopus can be served in a number of ways which I will go into later. In between there are a number of fish whose price depends on supply and include xifia (sword fish), a couple varieties of Mediterranean tuna, and a whole family of bream, trout and even mollusks. Included among them is fagri (red porgy), sargos (sea-bream), lavraki (sea bass),  lithrini (pandora), and synagrida (dentex) most of which are either baked or grilled and sold by the kilo.

Then at the top of the fish food chain is astakos (lobster), which can cost a small fortune and is familiar to anyone who has taken a charter sailboat around the islands because many skippers take their clients to the tavernas that serve fresh lobster or the newly popular astako makaronada (macaroni with lobster). Not surprising since skippers often get a commission from the restaurants for any business they bring and a table full of lobster can cost a few hundred euros or more. But here's a tip. Save your lobster-money for home. Mediterranean lobsters are over-rated, under-tasty and few chefs have mastered the cooking of these creatures. They also lack claws which besides the tails are the only edible part unless you want to spend the night sucking bits of meat from legs and antennae. Yes. The Greek lobsters have meat in the antennae. But not enough to justify eating them. In Milos I did see lobsters with claws at the restaurant of the famous Roberto at Da Peppe. "Where did you find lobsters with claws?" I asked him in wonder. "On the airplane" he said in his broken English. They were flown in, maybe from Maine, definitely from somewhere on the Atlantic.

Claire Lloyd and Matthew Usmar Lauder live their lives between London, Sydney and the Greek island of Lesvos where they have created a charming home in the village of Skalochori. Both are creatives. Claire is an author, photographer, creative director, and a creator of nurturing spaces. Matthew is a painter and creator of three-dimensional art, exhibiting in Sydney and London.

The couple fell in love in the village of Skalochori thirteen years ago and renovated an old house in the middle of the village. Both are passionate animal lovers and when they moved to Greece they rescued a beautiful tortoiseshell cat and called her Sweetie. And so began a new phase of their lives devoted to helping animals in need.

Many unwanted dogs in Greece are dumped on the streets and cats are also left to their own devices to survive. Claire and Matthew were touched by the plight of these animals and began to rescue the dogs and cats they found. So far they have rescued more than 70 dogs and many, many cats - at the moment they are feeding about 50 cats every day (including their own house cats).

Rescuing animals is very rewarding and while this could be a full-time career for both of them, Claire and Matthew are still fully engaged with their creative careers and frequently travel to London and Sydney from Greece. That’s all fine if they can travel separately, but they also need (and want) to travel together sometimes.

The couple used to rely on local friends to help out with their animals but, as time went on, this became more and more complicated, so they turned to TrustedHousesitters.com. TrustedHousesitters works by pairing home and pet owners with caring, verified sitters who move into their homes to care for their animals while they are away. The owner gets the reassurance of knowing that their house and pet family are being well cared for, while the sitter gets an unforgettable and authentic travel experience. At TrustedHousesitters, Claire and Matthew found caring sitters who understand the needs of their pets and also respect their home and appreciate having a taste of a different life in Greece.

Claire says, “We have a number of permanent pets who live with us in the house. They include our gorgeous Nellie, who was our first rescue dog and used to live alone in the countryside chained to a barrel. She was very traumatised when she first came to us and now needs to be cared for by animal lovers.”

Nellie Photo by Claire Lloyd
“TrustedHousesitters is perfect because it fits with our needs. It is essential that we have sitters who really care about animals and want to have a travel experience which is different. Living in a small Greek village, in the winter for example, is not for everyone,” adds Matthew.

“We always make it really clear to people applying for a sit that they will be experiencing Greek life in a small, simple village and that if they come in the winter, the weather can be challenging as well. Being honest with each other is essential to getting the right fit with a sitter. We’ve been very fortunate and have had some wonderful people to stay. Our last couple said that their time in our home had been life changing. That is so rewarding for me as a creator of nurturing spaces. I believe that life is about being able to move to be creative whenever you feel that you need to be renewed. You should never be afraid of change and of taking on new challenges,” Claire concludes.

Since launching in 2010, the site has arranged more than two million nights of house and pet sitting globally, saving its members more than half a billion dollars in accommodation and pet care costs.

Unlike a home rental, no money changes hands. Unlike a house swap, there is no need to have someone stay in your home if you simply want to travel as a sitter. All arrangements are made through trust, with members building their trust profiles through references, recommendations and police background checks. The site has more five-star reviews than any other travel or pet company on TrustPilot.
