Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos & Yo-Yo Ma At The Odeon Of Herodes Atticus
Three superstars of classical music will come together for a top-tier event on June 15 at the Herodion: Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma will share the stage of the Roman Odeon for a magical evening as part of this year’s Athens Epidaurus Festival.
The three leading soloists, who have been performing together for years and filling the world’s greatest concert halls, will interpret works by Beethoven and Brahms. Among the most renowned names internationally, Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma have already recorded three albums featuring Beethoven’s works, a collaboration greatly celebrated by music lovers.
The musical union of these three brilliant performers with their incomparable technique at the Herodion is expected to be one of the major, internationally acclaimed, musical events of this summer!
Emanuel Ax
Born in Lviv, present-day Ukraine, to Polish parents who emigrated to Canada when Ax was a child, he won first prize at the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv in 1974 and the Michaels Award for young artists the following year. In 1979, he received the Avery Fisher Prize, having made his New York debut in the Young Concert Artists series a few years earlier.
He followed a significant solo career without ever abandoning chamber music. He has recorded all of Beethoven's and Brahms' cello and piano sonatas with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, recordings that have won Grammy Awards. Additionally, he has been honored with Grammy Awards for his complete cycle of Joseph Haydn's piano sonatas. He participated in the BBC's award-winning documentary on the Holocaust, which aired on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Last year, he performed the world premiere of Anders Hillborg's Piano Concerto with the San Francisco Symphony and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. The concerto was a special commission from the orchestra for Ax. Following successful recordings of Brahms' piano trios with Leonidas Kavakos and Yo-Yo Ma (2017), he aims to record all of Beethoven's symphonies and trios with the same collaborators in the coming years.
Leonidas Kavakos
Leonidas Kavakos, recognized worldwide as an artist of rare quality, is distinguished for his unmatched technique, captivating virtuosity, and completeness of interpretation. He regularly collaborates with the greatest orchestras and conductors, giving recitals in the most renowned halls and festivals.
In recent years, he has built a highly successful profile as a conductor, leading the New York Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Symphony, French Radio Philharmonic, and La Scala Philharmonic, among others.
He has an exclusive recording contract with Sony Classical and has been named Echo Klassik Instrumentalist of the Year (2013) and Gramophone Artist of the Year (2014). With regular collaborators Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma, he has recorded Beethoven's symphonies and trios under the series "Beethoven for Three." With the ApollΩn Ensemble, he recently recorded Bach's Violin Concertos, which have been praised internationally. Born into a musical family in Athens, he runs his own masterclass series, attracting violinists and chamber music ensembles from around the world. He has been a regular member of the Academy of Athens in the Chair of Music since 2022, and plays on a 1734 “Willemotte” Stradivarius.
Yo-Yo Ma
Yo-Yo Ma's multifaceted career demonstrates his belief that culture has the power to create connections of trust and understanding. At every stage of his journey, he seeks to forge relationships that activate the imagination and humanity.
His most recent project, Our Common Nature, is a cultural journey focusing on the power of nature to bring us together. This followed the Bach Project, a tour during which Ma traveled to six continents performing Bach’s cello suites in collaboration with local partners. These endeavors reflect the artist’s ongoing effort to unite different musical genres and traditions to envision and build a stronger society.
Born in Paris in 1955 to Chinese parents, Ma began learning the cello with his father at age 4. At 7, his family moved to New York, where he continued his cello studies and later pursued humanities. He has recorded over 120 albums, won 19 Grammy Awards, and performed for nine American presidents, most recently at the current president’s inauguration.
He has been honored with the National Medal of Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Birgit Nilsson Prize, among others. He has been a UN Messenger of Peace since 2006 and was recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2020.

Unlocking Hidden Business Resources: A Fresh Perspective
In the ever-evolving landscape of business, staying competitive requires more than just leveraging traditional resources. While most entrepreneurs are familiar with capital, human resources, and technology, there are several less obvious resources that can provide significant advantages. Here, we explore some underutilized resources that can propel your business to new heights.
1. Crowdsourcing Expertise
Crowdsourcing goes beyond fundraising. Platforms like Wazoku Crowd and Kaggle allow businesses to tap into global expertise for problem-solving and innovation. By posing challenges to a crowd, businesses can receive a myriad of solutions, often at a fraction of the cost of hiring consultants or R&D teams.
Why it matters: This approach can lead to breakthrough innovations and solutions that might not emerge from within the company.
2. Data As A Strategic Asset
While businesses collect data, many do not fully exploit it. Advanced analytics and big data tools can uncover patterns and insights that drive strategic decisions. Predictive analytics, for example, can forecast customer behavior, optimize supply chains, and personalize marketing efforts.
Why it matters: Data-driven decisions are more accurate and can lead to higher efficiency and better customer experiences.
3. Strategic Partnerships & Alliances
Strategic partnerships can provide access to new markets, technologies, and expertise without the need for mergers or acquisitions. Collaborating with companies that complement your business can lead to synergies and shared success.
Why it matters: Partnerships can amplify strengths and mitigate weaknesses, providing a competitive edge in crowded markets.
4. Intellectual Property (IP)
IP goes beyond patents and trademarks. Licensing technology or processes can create new revenue streams. Moreover, a strong IP portfolio can enhance market position and attract investors.
Why it matters: Protecting and monetizing innovations can provide long-term financial benefits and market security.
5. Customer Feedback As A Resource
Active solicitation and analysis of customer feedback can reveal invaluable insights into product performance and customer satisfaction. Tools like Net Promoter Score (NPS) and Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT) help quantify feedback and guide improvements.
Why it matters: Direct feedback from users is critical for continuous improvement and customer retention.
6. Employee Advocacy
Employees can be powerful brand ambassadors. Encouraging them to share their positive experiences on social media and professional networks can enhance brand visibility and reputation. Programs that recognize and reward employee advocacy can amplify this effect.
Why it matters: Genuine endorsements from employees can build trust and attract talent and customers.
7. Sustainable Practices
Sustainability is more than a buzzword; it's a business imperative. Implementing eco-friendly practices can reduce costs and appeal to a growing segment of environmentally conscious consumers. Certifications like B Corp can further enhance credibility and marketability.
Why it matters: Sustainable businesses often enjoy increased loyalty, cost savings, and compliance with regulations.
8. Learning & Development Platforms
Continuous learning is essential in a fast-paced business environment. Leveraging online learning platforms like Coursera or LinkedIn Learning for employee development can keep your team updated with the latest skills and knowledge.
Why it matters: A well-trained workforce is more innovative, productive, and capable of driving business growth.
9. Community Engagement
Engaging with local communities can build strong relationships and enhance brand loyalty. Community engagement can take many forms, from sponsoring local events to participating in volunteer programs.
Why it matters: Positive community relations can lead to a supportive local customer base and enhance your company's reputation.
10. Remote & Flexible Work Policies
The shift to remote work has opened new possibilities for talent acquisition and cost savings. Embracing flexible work policies can attract top talent from across the globe and improve employee satisfaction.
Why it matters: Flexibility in work arrangements can lead to increased productivity, lower overhead costs, and a broader talent pool.
Incorporating these lesser-known resources into your business strategy can provide unique advantages and drive sustainable growth. By thinking beyond traditional resources and tapping into these innovative areas, businesses can stay ahead of the curve and thrive in a competitive landscape.

Grand Opening Of The Piraeus Tower: A New Era For The Iconic Building
Yesterday, Tuesday, June 4th, the grand official opening of the Piraeus Tower took place, attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, along with city officials and representatives from the construction company DIMAND.
The iconic 34,600-square-meter, 22-story building in Piraeus, constructed by DIMAND, remained unfinished and unused for nearly 40 years. It has now been redeveloped into a "green" office and commercial building. It is Greece's first digital and bioclimatic skyscraper set to receive the highest Platinum certification under the international sustainable development standard LEED. Notable companies such as Zara and JD Sports are already operating in the Tower, with more businesses expected to move in soon.
The Mayor of Piraeus, Yannis Moralis, was the first to speak about the landmark project. He stated, "This is a historic day for the city of Piraeus. We proudly inaugurate the Tower, which took nearly 40 years to complete. It is the second tallest building in Greece and is no longer an abandoned shell haunting the country's largest port. The Tower is one of our greatest achievements, proving that the impossible can become possible." Mr. Moralis also commented on the significant economic impact the Tower will have on the city. He said, "It serves as the foundation for a wave of investments that have already begun, symbolizing the extroversion and progress taking root in Piraeus." He highlighted ongoing investments in Piraeus, such as the redevelopment of Mikrolimano and Agios Dionysios, previously neglected areas. Major projects by the central administration, including the Metro, the new Judicial Hall of Piraeus, and the new Town Hall, were also mentioned.
The History of the Skyscraper Built in the 1970s
The iconic Piraeus Tower, essentially a skyscraper and the second tallest building in Greece after the Athens Tower, stands as a symbol of ambition and transformation. In the 1970s, its construction aimed to make it a landmark in a rapidly changing port, evolving into an international hub for shipping and transportation.
Nearly half a century later, the Piraeus Tower is finally acquiring the prestige it never quite achieved.
The reconstruction began in 1972, a significant year for the building. Covering approximately 34,600 square meters, the Piraeus Commercial Maritime Center (Piraeus Tower) remained mostly unused since its construction in 1972.
Four years earlier, in 1968, then-mayor Aristides Skylitsis demolished the historic old market of Piraeus, providing the site for the Tower.
It boasts 24 floors and two basements, with a total built area of 34,623 square meters.
However, the view from the third floor upwards was disheartening for anyone entering the Tower in the past decade: empty spaces that remained unfinished since the initial construction phase.
The salvation of the Piraeus Tower, one of the most ambitious construction projects in Greece in the 1970s, came in July 2020, following renewed interest from the municipal administration under Mayor Moralis.
The Architectural Team
The design of the Piraeus Tower was entrusted to the architectural firm of Alexandros Loizos, in collaboration with Ioannis Vikelas, the architect of the Athens Tower, and Demosthenes Molfesis. The building's skeleton was completed in 1974. Between 1979 and 1982, the first stores began operating on the ground floor, but the investment in glass and metal facade cladding was not completed until 1983, leaving the bulk of the building's interior unfinished.
Only the first three floors were utilized for shops, offices, and educational institutions. By 1999, the ground floor housed shops, the first floor contained storage spaces, and the second floor was home to the Ralleios School and the Piraeus Municipal Enterprise for Promotion (DEPEP).
A public international bidding competition took place in 1997-1998 for the completion of the Piraeus Commercial Maritime Center, with a budget of 8 billion drachmas, including the completion of the building, the construction of an underground garage, and a shared surrounding area.
In 2001, the Tower came under the ownership of the Municipality of Piraeus, and a new public international competition was held for its utilization, with a budget of 6 billion drachmas. The company AVAX won the bid, but it was not implemented. Another attempt to exploit the building occurred in 2007.
Overlooking the Sea from 88 Meters
The renovated 22-story building, rising 88 meters above the sea, is now an architectural landmark at the start of the Athenian Riviera, in the heart of Europe's largest passenger port, representing the most innovative, state-of-the-art "green" practices.
Last Christmas, the Tower was illuminated in a spectacular light show, just months before its official opening to tenants and visitors. The Tower now shines every night with environmentally responsible white lighting: very soft white light outlines the facades, minimizing light pollution and keeping energy consumption as low as that of a small apartment's air conditioning.
The first three floors, along with part of the fourth floor, will be used for commercial purposes, while the remaining floors will house offices. The roof of the third floor will feature a restaurant-bar, and part of the third and fourth floors will house a gym.
Access to the office floors will be via contactless elevators, with floor access controlled by cards. The elevator speed will be four meters per second, the fastest in any building in Greece.
