In a world that often emphasizes conformity and fitting into various molds and stereotypes, teaching our children the importance of self-love is more than necessary. In an era dominated by social media where comparison is just a click away, it’s more crucial than ever to empower young people to embrace their uniqueness. We must teach them that everyone is different in their own beautiful way, and this very diversity brings color to a life meant to be vibrant, not dull, monochrome, or gray.

Self-Love: The Cornerstone of Psychological Well-Being

We often confuse self-love with narcissism, but while the latter is a personality disorder, the former is the foundation of a healthy and fulfilling life. Self-love is not about self-obsession or vanity; rather, it is essential for cultivating a positive relationship with oneself.

Numerous studies have revealed the tangible benefits of self-love. Individuals who cultivate self-love tend to have higher self-esteem, emotional well-being, and improved overall welfare. When people love and accept themselves, they see themselves as valuable, capable, and worthy of happiness, which in turn enhances their confidence in various aspects of life.

Most importantly, self-love plays a critical role in strengthening mental resilience. When children love themselves, they develop an inner strength and confidence that helps them respond to life's challenges. They become less dependent on external validation, making them more adaptable and better equipped to handle setbacks.

Teaching Self-Love to Our Children

Be Role Models: Children learn by observing the adults in their lives. If we love ourselves and demonstrate it through strategies like positive self-talk, our children will follow suit.

Encourage Open Communication: Create a safe environment for children to express their thoughts and feelings without fear. Encourage them to talk about their insecurities and fears, and provide empathetic, non-judgmental support.

Promote Self-Discovery: Every child needs to embark on a journey of self-discovery, and the role of every parent and guardian is to be a companion, not a captain. Children will discover their interests, likes and dislikes, and dreams for the future on their own. We should encourage them to engage in activities that bring them joy and a sense of fulfillment, celebrating their achievements, no matter how small.

Limit Negative Influences: Childhood is generally a very fragile period, and a child’s self-perception can be negatively affected by external factors like social media. Talk to children and teach them to use critical thinking to reject unrealistic beauty standards and ideals of success.

Provide Unconditional Love: Attachment theory highlights the importance of a secure emotional base from which children explore the world and, by extension, themselves. Remind children that your love is unwavering and not dependent on their achievements or behavior. Only then will they learn to love themselves, day by day.

Incorporating these strategies into our parenting is vital for instilling the value of self-love in children. This lays the foundation for a more confident and emotionally healthy future.

As we embark on this journey together, we must remember that self-love is not just about feeling good about ourselves. It is an ongoing process that equips us with the courage and resilience to face difficulties, and it is the only way to achieve true happiness!
The Athens Epidaurus Festival is thrilled to welcome "the most otherworldly beautiful voice on the planet," the charismatic countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński, to the Herodion. This marks the first visit to Greece for the award-winning opera star and breakdance sensation.

Joining him is the renowned baroque and classical music ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro, presenting a concert based on their album Beyond. Orliński's voice has been described as one that "can make Vivaldi speak as directly as a pop song."

Generation Z knows Orliński well as the artist who bridges their generation with the world of opera, introducing them to baroque music in his unique way and proving the timeless appeal of classical music.

International critics have praised Orliński's voice, with the Times calling it "a voice strong and steady, from angelic high notes to powerful, dark lows," and the Sunday Times noting it can "make Vivaldi speak as directly as a pop song."

Trained at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and the Juilliard School in New York, Orliński has performed to sold-out audiences at major venues worldwide, including Covent Garden in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the San Francisco Opera. His remarkable ability to connect the seemingly disparate worlds of opera and breakdance captivates audiences. Notably, his video performance of the aria "Vedrò con mio diletto" from Vivaldi's Il Giustino (Aix-en-Provence, 2017) surpassed 11 million views on YouTube within days of the concert.

Orliński has expressed that from a young age, classical music moved him deeply, driving him to dance and explore how music influences movement. He has won awards in skateboarding, breakdancing, and pole dancing, graced the covers of top fashion magazines, and modeled for renowned brands. His multifaceted artistic journey was even documented in Arte's Music for a While. In addition to his musical career, Orliński is also involved in volunteer work and activism.

Il Pomo d’Oro's Commitment to Music and Community

Il Pomo d’Oro, performing for the second time at the Herodion, was founded in 2012 and quickly gained fame for their dynamic, historically informed performances of baroque and classical works.

Named after Cesti's opera Il Pomo d’Oro (The Golden Apple, 1668), they have recorded 46 award-winning CDs of instrumental and operatic music. Active in volunteerism and activism, they are official ambassadors of El Sistema Greece, providing charity concerts, free workshops, and lessons in refugee camps across the country since 2017. In close collaboration with El Sistema Venezuela, they offer free online lessons in baroque music interpretation.

Working for the first time with the internationally acclaimed Greek director and teacher, Theodoros Terzopoulos, the National Theatre of Greece presents Aeschylus’ Oresteia trilogy at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 July as part of the Athens and Epidaurus Festival. This landmark cultural event is sure to be an iconic production of intellectual and philosophical depth that pushes the boundaries of art.

b 39035 or 03

About the Oresteia

In 458 BCE, at a time of violent social and political upheaval, Aeschylus presented the Oresteia (Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and the Eumenides), the only surviving trilogy of ancient drama and his last extant work, written just two years before his death, which reflects many of the rapid changes of his era.

The trilogy revolves around the tragic ordeal of Orestes, which spreads successively to all the characters and the chorus through successive stages, from destabilisation to desperation to madness. This situation is exploited by Athena in the third part of the trilogy, when she institutes democracy by force, through a controversial peace.

In the first two parts of the trilogy, Agamemnon and The Libation Bearers, the murders that put an end to the tyrannical rule of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra are the culmination of a new period of crisis and destabilisation that is reflected in The Eumenides. The Furies, the chthonic deities that represent instinct and impulse, preserve memory. Knowing that any dispute with the gods is doomed to end in defeat, they rebel and threaten the good order of the city. Orestes must pay so that not only the crime but also its repetition are punished, and the memory of the conflict is kept alive.

b 39027 or 02

Athena uses every means at her disposal in her attempt to achieve peace between the gods and the Furies, offering the latter various rewards and privileges. To achieve their capitulation, she brings violence into the realm of language. Her speech introduces deceitful persuasion, lies and deception into the political arena. The Furies yield of their own accord. Wearing the characteristic purple robes of metics (resident aliens), they are renamed the Eumenides (“Gracious Ones”) and move away from the heart of the city. Their ultimate fate is obscurity and oblivion, deep within the bowels of the earth. Democracy has been established. But not painlessly. Whatever is incompatible with the new regime – the part of the living body associated with memory, instinct, animal drive – has been banished. The new order of things is imposed by the mechanisms of power in such a way that it is as if these vital forces had never existed.

The Furies compromise and accept the social position of metics, yet their internal structure is not altered. Like natural phenomena that do not disappear from the earth, but spiral through transformation, escalation and de-escalation, so the chthonic deities can be imagined retreating and withdrawing, only to re-emerge, constantly assuming new, unexpected forms.
On Friday 2 and Saturday 3 August, the National Theatre of Greece presents Euripides’ The Bacchae, with Greek and English surtitles, at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus.

Directed by Thanos Papakonstantinou as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, this tragedy of mysticism and ecstasy – but also of barbarity – is an enthralling artistic experience orchestrated by the god of theatre himself, Dionysus.

b 39128 or 0322 nef

About The Bacchae

When the god Dionysus arrives in Thebes, King Pentheus refuses to acknowledge his first cousin as a divinity and forbids his subjects to worship him. This excites the wrath of Dionysus, who, in a tragic reversal of persecutor and persecuted, leads Pentheus to destruction at the hands of his own mother.

Euripides wrote The Bacchae – a tragedy of Greeks, rulers and people, according to the great Polish theatre critic and theoretician Jan Kott – in the third decade of the Peloponnesian War, when History was now out of control. The great tragic poet composed it during his last year in Macedonia, where he had come into contact with the cult of Dionysus.

b 39126 or 2 k 0097 nef

Not for the first time bringing his fellow-citizens face-to-face with behaviour that he had condemned throughout his life, Euripides constructed a tragedy – one of the few with Dionysus as a main character – about the god’s conflict with mortals, human virtue and savagery, caution and fallacy, and the rational and the irrational. For Euripides, when man is overcome by his bestial instincts, when barbarity awakens furiously within him, all social co-existence is negated, even when it is that cornerstone of society, the relationship of mother and child.

It is violence that means the end of the city-state of Athens. And as the tragedy grapples with the essence of human identity, political or individual (with the end of the latter), The Bacchae becomes – in many respects – a drama about the death of ancient tragedy itself.
Greek tragedy is a cornerstone of Western literature, offering timeless stories of human struggle, fate, and the gods.

Here are five essential Greek tragedies that everyone should watch to appreciate the depth and beauty of this ancient art form!

1. Oedipus Rex (Oedipus the King) by Sophocles

"Oedipus Rex" is perhaps the most famous of all Greek tragedies. It tells the story of Oedipus, the king of Thebes, who is determined to rid his city of a plague. In his quest, he uncovers his tragic destiny: he has unwittingly killed his father and married his mother. The play explores themes of fate, free will, and the limits of human knowledge.

Why Watch It? The intricate plot and the intense emotional journey of Oedipus make this a must-see. Its exploration of fate and identity continues to resonate with modern audiences.

2. Antigone by Sophocles

"Antigone" is the sequel to "Oedipus Rex" and centers on Oedipus's daughter, Antigone. The play begins with the aftermath of a civil war in which Antigone's brothers have killed each other. King Creon, the new ruler, decrees that one brother will be honored while the other is left unburied. Antigone defies Creon’s orders to give her brother a proper burial, leading to tragic consequences.

Why Watch It? "Antigone" is a powerful examination of civil disobedience, the conflict between state and family loyalty, and the individual's moral duty versus societal laws.

3. Medea by Euripides

"Medea" is the harrowing story of Medea, a sorceress who takes revenge on her unfaithful husband, Jason. After Jason leaves her for another woman, Medea enacts a horrific vengeance, killing their children and Jason's new bride. Euripides' portrayal of Medea as a complex, multifaceted character challenges the audience's sympathies and preconceptions.

Why Watch It? The intense emotional drama and the radical portrayal of a woman's rage and agency make "Medea" a compelling and thought-provoking play.

4. The Oresteia by Aeschylus

"The Oresteia" is a trilogy consisting of three plays: "Agamemnon," "The Libation Bearers," and "The Eumenides." It follows the story of the House of Atreus, beginning with King Agamemnon’s return from the Trojan War and his murder by his wife, Clytemnestra. The cycle continues with their son Orestes avenging his father's death and concludes with Orestes being pursued by the Furies and seeking justice.

Why Watch It? This trilogy offers a profound exploration of justice, revenge, and the evolution of societal law. The transition from personal vengeance to institutionalized justice reflects themes still relevant today.

5. The Bacchae by Euripides

"The Bacchae" depicts the story of King Pentheus of Thebes and his resistance to the god Dionysus, who seeks to establish his cult in the city. Pentheus' refusal and subsequent attempts to suppress Dionysian worship lead to his own tragic downfall. The play highlights the struggle between reason and instinct, order and chaos.

Why Watch It? "The Bacchae" is a masterful exploration of the dualities within human nature and the dangers of denying one’s own instincts and the divine.

These five Greek tragedies offer a window into ancient Greek culture and universal themes that continue to resonate today. Watching these plays not only provides entertainment but also deepens our understanding of human nature, societal structures, and the complexities of fate and free will. Whether you are a newcomer to Greek drama or a seasoned enthusiast, these tragedies are essential viewing for anyone interested in the enduring power of storytelling.
