Greece is renowned for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. However, beyond the well-known landmarks and myths, there are many intriguing aspects of Greece that remain lesser-known.

Here are 18 fascinating facts about Greece that might surprise you:

1. The World’s Oldest Computer:
The Antikythera mechanism, often considered the world’s first analog computer, was discovered in an ancient shipwreck off the coast of the Greek island Antikythera in 1901. Dating back to around 150-100 BC, it was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes.

2. Over 6,000 Islands: Greece boasts over 6,000 islands and islets scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, but only around 227 of them are inhabited.

3. The Birthplace of Democracy: While this is well-known, what’s often overlooked is that the democratic system established in Athens around the 5th century BC involved a complex system of direct democracy where citizens could participate directly in decision-making.

4. World’s Longest National Anthem: Greece’s national anthem, "Hymn to Liberty," has 158 stanzas. Written by Dionysios Solomos in 1823, it is the longest national anthem in the world.

7. Olympic Flame Tradition: The tradition of lighting the Olympic flame originated in Ancient Greece. The flame was lit to signify the start of the ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia.

8. First actor: Thespis of Icaria, a 6th-century BC poet, is often considered the first actor in Greek drama. His name gave rise to the term "thespian," meaning actor.

9. The Greek Language: Modern Greek is derived from ancient Greek, and it is one of the oldest recorded living languages still in use today, with written records spanning over 34 centuries.

13. Rich Flora and Fauna: Greece is home to more than 6,000 species of plants and a wide range of wildlife, many of which are endemic to the region, including the Cretan wild goat and the monk seal.

14. Ancient Theater Acoustics: The ancient theater of Epidaurus, built in the 4th century BC, is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, allowing the audience to hear performances with incredible clarity, even from the back rows.

15. Coffee Culture: Greece is the fifth highest country in the world in coffee consumption. It has its own unique coffee patents, such as freddo espresso, freddo cappuccino, frappe, and, of course, greek coffee which you can't find anywhere else in the world.

In the first full season of the new era of Lycabettus, the program curated by the Technopolis City of Athens opened on Wednesday, May 22, with the melodic techno vibes and spectacular visuals of Mathame, the Italian techno duo of brothers Matteo and Amedeo Giovanelli. Known as one of the most sought-after acts in global dance music, they will present a spectacular AV show with guests Lyke and SONA. On Saturday, May 25, Alexandros Tsouvelas, sharper and more battle-ready than ever, will celebrate his 10-year presence in stand-up comedy with many guests.

One of the most recognizable voices and important personalities in rock and metal music of the last thirty years, Corey Taylor, will grace Lycabettus on Tuesday, May 28, with the greatest hits of his career as the lead singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour, as well as his solo work. On Saturday, June 1, Adriatique will take to the decks, transforming the hill into a vast dance floor. Adrian Shala and Adrian Schweizer, the successful Swiss duo, will deliver an extended set alongside Echonomist, Nick Jojo, and Human Rias.

One of the most touching nights this summer at Lycabettus will be Monday, June 3. Friends, collaborators, and companions of Lavrentis Machairitsas, including Giannis Zouganelis, Christos Thivaios, Giannis Kotsiras, Dimitra Papiou, Miltos Paschalidis, Dionysis Tsaknis, and many more, will remember and honor the creator who left an indelible mark on Greek rock with a tribute concert titled "But I Still Exist, I'm Still Here."

The unique Thanasis Papakonstantinou will connect with his devoted audience with three consecutive nights, as his summer tour, featuring Martha Frintzila, Giannis Litainas, and Alexandros Ktistakis, stops at Lycabettus on Friday, June 7, Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9. On Monday, June 10, Marios Frangoulis and Giota Nega will present "Love Stories," their first on-stage meeting, performing iconic songs from their discographies and classics from renowned composers and performers.

The spectacular "The Wall - Pink Floyd's Rock Opera" comes to Athens for the first time on Sunday, July 7th, and Monday, July 8th. Influential rock musicians, renowned singers backed by the legendary band, and solo dancers of contemporary dance compose a performance that blends Pink Floyd's music, dance, song, and archival footage from Alan Parker's eponymous 1979 film.

The first part of the Lycabettus program concludes by hosting the last, highly anticipated concert of Rockwave Nights: 21 years after their first appearance at the top of Lycabettus, Placebo, the group that the Greek audience loves like few, returns on Thursday, August 1st, spreading once again their unique "Placebo Effect" on the city's horizon.

On Sunday 26 May 2024, the Acropolis Museum participates in the pan-hellenic cultural action titled “Green Cultural Routes”, organized by the Ministry of Culture, offering its visitors the thematic presentation “Exploring nature’s elements at the Acropolis Museum”. Protagonists will be special objects of the Museum that ‘speak’ about the four elements of nature that were reflected into art in different ways. Beliefs, myths, philosophical concerns, as well as simple daily needs find their expression in shape and image in elaborate lamps, mythical demons and ritual vessels. Museum archaeologists tell stories made of fire, earth, air and water -sometimes destructive and other times life-giving - sounding the alarm about the negative interaction between man and nature.

Information:

Sunday 26/5: 10 a.m. in English and 1 p.m. in Greek
Duration: 90 minutes
Participation: This special thematic presentation is offered free of charge and a free admission ticket is required from the Museum Ticket Desk (limited to 30 visitors per session).

Learning Greek can be a rewarding and enriching experience, especially for expats living in Greece or regular visitors who wish to deepen their connection with the local culture. Greek is known for its rich history, beautiful script, and cultural significance, but it also presents unique challenges such as complex grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. This guide will provide you with essential tips and strategies to successfully learn Greek and navigate these difficulties.

Why Learn Greek?
  • Cultural Enrichment: Greek is one of the world's oldest languages, with a literary tradition that spans millennia. Learning Greek allows you to read classical texts in their original form and better understand Greek culture and history.
  • Enhanced Daily Life: For expats and regular visitors, knowing Greek can significantly improve your daily interactions, making it easier to navigate, shop, and connect with locals.
  • Cognitive Benefits: Learning a new language boosts cognitive abilities, improves memory, and enhances problem-solving skills.
Getting Started

1. Set Clear Goals

Determine why you want to learn Greek and set specific, achievable goals. Whether it's having a basic conversation, reading Greek literature, or passing a language proficiency test, clear goals will keep you motivated.

2. Learn the Greek Alphabet

The Greek alphabet is different from the Latin alphabet, and all the other alphabets to be honest. It's unique! Start by familiarizing yourself with the 24 Greek letters and their sounds. Practice writing and pronouncing each letter. Resources like flashcards and alphabet charts can be very helpful.

3. Basic Vocabulary & Phrases

Begin with essential vocabulary and common phrases. Learn greetings, basic questions, numbers, and everyday expressions. This foundational vocabulary will help you start forming simple sentences and engaging in basic conversations.

4. Use Language Learning Apps

Language learning apps like Duolingo and Memrise offer structured courses in Greek. These apps provide interactive lessons, quizzes, and practice exercises to build your skills progressively.

Challenges of Learning Greek

1. Complex Grammar

Greek grammar can be challenging due to its use of cases, verb conjugations, and three grammatical genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter). Understanding these concepts is essential for proper sentence construction.

2. Pronunciation

Pronunciation can be tricky, with certain sounds and double letters (like μπ, ντ, γγ, αι, ει) that do not exist in English. Listening to native speakers and practicing regularly can help you master these sounds.

3. Vocabulary & Dictation

Greek has a rich vocabulary with many words derived from ancient Greek. Dictation can be challenging because Greek uses different letters or combinations of letters to represent similar sounds (like η, ι, υ, ει, οι all make the same sound).

4. 3 Genders

Greek nouns are divided into three genders, which affect articles and adjective endings. Memorizing the gender of each noun and their corresponding articles is crucial for accurate communication.

Effective Learning Strategies

1. Immerse Yourself

Immerse yourself in the language as much as possible. Listen to Greek music, watch Greek movies with subtitles, and try to think in Greek. Immersion helps you get accustomed to the sounds and rhythms of the language.

2. Practice Speaking

Speaking is crucial for language acquisition. Engage with locals to practice speaking Greek regularly. This not only improves your language skills but also helps you connect with the community. Language exchange platforms like Tandem and HelloTalk can connect you with native Greek speakers.

3. Use Flashcards

Flashcards are a great way to memorize vocabulary and phrases. Apps like Anki allow you to create digital flashcards and use spaced repetition to enhance retention.

4. Study Grammar

Focus on key grammatical concepts such as verb conjugations, noun cases, and sentence structure. Use grammar books and online resources for structured learning. Practice by creating sentences and using grammar exercises.

5. Take a Class

If possible, enroll in a Greek language class at a local community center or language school. A formal class provides structured learning, expert guidance, and the opportunity to practice with fellow learners.

Advanced Tips

1. Read in Greek

Start with simple texts like children's books or short stories and gradually progress to more complex material. Reading helps you expand your vocabulary, understand sentence structure, and improve comprehension.

2. Write in Greek

Practice writing essays, journal entries, or even social media posts in Greek. Writing helps reinforce vocabulary and grammar while allowing you to express your thoughts in the new language.

3. Use Greek Media

The 3rd Athens Irish Festival is opening its doors 24th-26th of May - step into a world of green and magic! A 3-day celebration of music, dance and art, dedicated to Ireland. You will find us in a new location , green as it is fitting and very accessible through the metro.

The Festival's Highlights

  • Guinness straight from the barrel, whiskey cocktails and other thematic drinks
  • Mouthwatering food options
  • 30+ thematic crafters and artists stalls
  • Music games for children
  • An Irish adventure TTRPG for adults and children 12+
  • 8 workshops
  • Nook of stories for young and old bookworms ... and much more!
The Festival kicks off on Friday 24th May with a quintessential Outdoor Irish Trad Session. A session is not a gig, it is an open to all, musical and social gathering of musicians who play accoustically. Followed by ethereal polyphonic all female group, Asma Cordis, which means song of the heart. They love traditional singing but also adding innovations. After that, we welcome on stage Φaretra Crystallina, an ensemble that pairs classical and traditional music with a rock twist. Now it is time to start dancing with Irish traditional tunes and songs by Plump and our first Irish ensemble. The fiery fiddles of Aidan Connolly and Shane Meehan are backed by Patrick Egan’s concertina and multi-instrumentalist Caoimhín Ó Fearghail.

On Saturday 25th May we start early with music and dance games for children, inspired by Irish customs, facilitated by experienced Eleni Geraki. After that, we will journey to Ireland, Scotland and the Appalachian mountains with songs of love, exile, the sea and nature by Curfá Gaelic- Nordic Choir, followed by an all female Irish Ensemble with Clíodhna Begley playing the viola, Maëlla Roué Demians from Brittany playing the flute and Siobhan Butler dancing Sean Nós . Then, Irial O’Ceallaigh will enchant us with traditional Sean Nós singing, with musical backing from Caoimhín Ó Fearghail. Saturday will end with all of our Irish guests going up on stage for a unique and celebratory Irish fiesta. Musicians that will appear: Aidan Connolly, Shane Meehan,Clíodhna Begley, Caoimhín Ó Fearghail, Dom Keogh, Irial O’ Ceallaigh, Patrick Egan, Liam McGoniggle, Maëlla Roué Demians and Siobhan Butler will dance Sean Nós. We will hear the atmospheric polyphonic folk group Tale Tellers and right after we fill the park with the sounds of community and singing from their Irish repertoire, before the deep and entrancing Celtic/Scandinavian music of Athens-based band Sólastas (Labrini Astrid Andersson Gioti: vocals, nyckelharpa, repertoire, Becka Wolfe: violin, viola, vocals, Antonis Pantazis: Irish mandolin, mandola, vocals, Orestis Gargoulakis: flute, tin whistle, vocals, John Tikof: guitar, vocals) and ending with a second Ensemble of our Irish guests (Aidan Connolly, Pádraig Keane, Fergus McGorman, Clíodhna Begley).

Finally, on Sunday 26th May, the last day of the Festival once again starts with an enticing all female polyphonic folk group, the Samodivas who love medieval, celtic and world music. After this, we will hear the deep and entrancing Celtic/Scandinavian music of Athens-based band Sólastas, created by ethnomusicologist Labri Giotti who sings and plays a unique instrument, the nyckelharpa. Upbeat quintet Noriana, the name of a fairy, will take the stage afterwards and treat us to jigs and reels entwined with their own fresh musical idiom. The festival closes with another Irish Ensemble: Shane Meehan playing the fiddle, τον Liam McGonnigle on the accordion, Dom Keogh beating his bodhran and Siobhan Butler dancing Sean Nós.

Throughout the festival, our Artisan’s Market will feature a range of stalls where you can find a variety of uniquely-crafted designs, prints, artefacts, jewellery and enchanting items. This year, we are joined again by Soul Twinkles Publications who are presenting an Irish version of their Role-Playing Game ‘Mythic Revolutions’.

In keeping with the Bardic tradition of Ireland, guests will have the opportunity to read fairytales at our signature ‘Nook of Stories’ with a few…feathered additions. They can go on a treasure hunt around the park to find our hidden stories and also trace the Fairy Path!

There are also educational workshops of singing, dance and musical instruments to choose from, on Saturday and Sunday. They will take place on festival grounds and have a small donation that goes directly to the Irist artists. Reservations are required.
