Sunday Tea With Mozart At Theatre Of The No

THEATRE OF THE NO, Athens' first English-speaking theatre, proudly presents «SUNDAY TEA WITH MOZART» a captivating opera recital showcasing the most enchanting highlights from two of Mozart's greatest operas: Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. The show premieres on October 13th and will run for a limited engagement of just eight performances, every Sunday at 17.00.

Step into the world of Mozart, as tree talented opera singers and a pianist, take you on a journey through these two iconic works, each of which broke boundaries and challenged social norms when they first appeared. With wit, charm, and breathtaking voices, they will bring to life the sharp humour and cleverness of Lorenzo da Ponte's libretto.

ABOUT THE OPERAS

Le Nozze di Figaro, adapted from Beaumarchais‎' provocative play, was initially banned for its bold themes of "immorality"and its “revolutionary tone”. It humorously exposes the struggles between servants and masters, questioning the power structures of the time.

Don Giovanni, often regarded as Mozart’s masterpiece, shocked audiences with its daring portrayal of a defiant man who refuses to repent, leading to his dramatic downfall. This opera’s exploration of moral conflict left a lasting impression on both critics and audiences alike.

Shadows: A Visual Tribute To John Cassavetes

The Hellenic American Union presents the exhibition "Shadows" as part of the 37th Panorama of European Cinema, paying tribute to the great Greek-American director John Cassavetes. Four young visual artists—Alexandros Vergis, Katerina Christopoulou, Vasilis Pafilis, and Virginia Axioti—illuminate, through their works, a world of shadows: the cinematic universe of John Cassavetes. The exhibition is curated by the renowned painter Yannis Psychopedis.

The opening will take place on Monday, October 21, 2024, at 7:30 PM, at the Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas Gallery of the Hellenic American Union (Massalias 22, Athens), and it will run until November 9, 2024.

John Cassavetes' 1959 film Shadows becomes the subject and meeting point between painting and cinema. This exhibition initiates a fruitful dialogue between the black-and-white cinematic atmosphere of the late 1950s and the vibrant, colorful visual language of today's era. As Yannis Psychopedis notes: "Cassavetes, the radical, pioneering director with his minimalist, improvisational, human-centered cinematic form, provides the raw material and inspiration for his 'Shadows' to be transformed into a visual feast of colors, shapes, techniques, and unique materials. The fluid black-and-white images of the film, the improvised rhythms, the expressive freedom, interpersonal conflicts, and emotional tensions are translated here by the four creators into a visual vocabulary filled with color pulses, unexpected material combinations, free artistic improvisations, and vivid, plastic emotion."

As part of the exhibition, and shortly before it concludes, John Cassavetes' film Shadows will be screened on Friday, November 8, at 7:00 PM at the Theater of the Hellenic American Union, with free admission.

Hours:

Monday – Friday: 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Sunday: Closed
Premiere: Wednesday October 30th
(Special Offer: 20 tickets available for €5 at the box office. Arrive by 16:00)

Atzmon is regarded as a pioneer for blending contemporary jazz with traditional Eastern music and has collaborated with some of the most recognizable names in music, including Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, and Robert Wyatt.

Robert Wyatt, writing for The Guardian, described him as "the greatest living musician on the planet."

Gilad Atzmon will make two exclusive performances: on Saturday, November 9th with the "Jim Kassavetis Quartet" and on November 30nd with "The Ultimate Duo" offering an unparalleled jazz experience for enthusiasts. The program continues with renowned artists and rising musicians, presenting a rich musical spectacle with international standards.

Program Details

November 9th: Jim Kassavetis Quartet featuring Gilad Atzmon

Dimitris Kassavetis, a 16-year-old prodigy known for his extensive musical vocabulary, technical excellence, and innovative approach, is undoubtedly jazz's new rising star.

With his impressive presence, Jim Kassavetis will lead the band, supported by the “The Mamas & the Papas” of Greek jazz: jazz mentor and virtuoso Konstantinos Stouraitis on bass, legendary Sera Bellos on drums, and internationally acclaimed jazz star Gilad Atzmon. This ensemble promises an unparalleled musical experience, blending powerful performances and melodic brilliance.

November 16th: Alekos Vretos Quartet – Mediterranean Echoes

The oud and traditional clarinet blend seamlessly with bass and piano, each musician contributing their unique artistry while preserving the original essence of the compositions.

The repertoire features original pieces by all four artists, interwoven with beloved works by Ara Dinkjian, Simon Shaheen, and Anouar Brahem. Audience interaction is key, making each performance an engaging, one-of-a-kind experience in Mediterranean jazz.

Their repertoire includes compositions and arrangements recorded by Reinhardt, merging the retro vibe of the 1930s and '40s with a fresh and creative approach.

Konstantinos Mitropoulos: Guitar, Giorgos Mourikis: Guitar, G. Roulos: Double Bass

November 30th: The Ultimate Duo – Yiannis Papadopoulos & Gilad Atzmon

FokiaNou Art Space is celebrating ten years of operation with a group exhibition entitled “Happy Anniversary”. A large group of Greek and foreign artists, who have held solo or two-person shows in the space, will participate with works in all media in a colorful and joyful birthday party.

FokiaNou Art Space began in 2014 as Fo Kia Nou 24/7, founded by the visual artist Blanka Amezkua as one of the first independent artist-run spaces in Athens. Having held a two-person exhibition there, which sealed their collaboration, Panagiotis Voulgaris and Mary Cox took over as directors and curators in the fall of 2016. Housed on the 7th floor of an old apartment in Pagrati, the space has held exhibitions, performances, workshops and other projects consistently throughout the last ten years as well as promoting cross-cultural collaboration between Greek and foreign artists. FokiaNou participated twice, in 2019 and 2023, in Supermarket, Stockholm Independent Art Fair, providing an opportunity for local artists to show their work internationally. Through its many open calls, such as the annual exhibition on the theme of Athens, the space has drawn a steady and growing community of artists and art enthusiasts. Join us in looking back on ten years of FokiaNou, which primarily celebrates the power of artists when they take matters into their own hands.

The Hellenic American Union presents the solo art exhibition of the renowned painter and set designer, Yiannis Metzikof, titled "The Gaze". The exhibition is curated by art historian Iris Kritikou.

The opening reception will take place on Monday, November 18, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., in the Hellenic American Union Galleries (22 Massalias Street, Athens), and the exhibition will run until January 11, 2025.

Over 140 unpublished paintings that Yiannis Metzikof has created over the past three years will be on display in this solo exhibition. Through a vibrant kaleidoscope of color and energy, visitors are welcomed by portraits of real and imaginary people, dancers and performers, visions and dreams that embody the creative, painterly, and visionary essence of the multi-talented Metzikof.

As curator Iris Kritikou notes about the exhibition:

Skillfully painted papers with light glossy materials, successive transparencies, and choreographies of daring, exquisite colors. Enigmatic faces, real or imagined, adorned with hidden trophies: beaks, hats, veils, and feathers, shells, flowers, leaves, birds, fish, and butterflies. Hands like fireworks. Strokes of ochre and violet or kernels of a captivating, unruly existence that emerge from an invisible yet companionable universe. Women and men of different ages, of otherworldly emotional states, of unknown time and origin, of suspended identity. Strange beings of dreams, theater, and night. And amidst them, from time to time, the focus of their gaze: dancers, witches, whole performers or bodiless phantoms of a heavenly Commedia or a dark Hell, as well as palimpsest documents of a returning memory and allegorical landscapes: lakes and damp forests or dark cradles and sails of ships flying from some bygone Wagnerian phantasmagoria.”

A limited edition album will be published for the exhibition by Mikri Arktos Publishing. The exhibition will also feature a series of parallel events and guided tours. Details of the event schedule will be announced soon.
